So I’m in Iraq right now, and we all know that us retarded Jarheads get all kinds of money when we deploy. Well I just reenlisted over here and got a pretty nice (tax free) chunk of Uncle Sam. After investing a ridiculous amount of money and putting some aside for an “exotic vacation” when I get back. I had a little bit more left over and the wife gave me the go-a-head to do pretty much what I want (can afford). So here it is in all its glory.
Custom Dana 60 rear w/ Detroit Locker
Custom Dana 44 front w/ Detroit Locker
High steer set up
Rubicon Spring over conversion (front and rear)
35” BFG MTR’s
4.88 gears (don’t hate on the gear size a v8 swap is coming soon enough)
Swing away tire carrier/rear bumper
E-fan
Ugrading the brake booster as well
I’m sticking with drums in the rear but they will be upgraded to full size truck drums
I’ll be getting new finder flares but haven’t decided on what kind either Bushwacker or something else,
And probably a new paint job.
The company that is making my axles and doing most of the work is called MIT out of El Cajon CA. The staff is great and the owner is a complete jeep nerd which is exactly who I want working on my pile. They’ve been more than helpful to me especially being over here. The wife even agreed to take it down before I get home so I’ll have a really nice “welcome back from you year in a sh!t-hole” present. I’m sure most of you will haze the crap out of me for most of the things I’m wanting, and I’m sure everyone will have a different opinion but that will make for a “fun” conversation.:stick:

With the kind of money that list will cost, you could buy a rig that is already built up and has a v8.
-
Sounds good. A hydraulic ram assist for the steering would be a good idea with the front locker and large tires. Also, you might consider selectable lockers because automatic lockers can make you slide sideways on off camber slopes. I've seen locked Jeeps fail to cross some off camber obstacles where open diff Jeeps got through fairly easily.

Congrats on the enlistment bonus and thanks for doing what you do. Your wife is greatly appreciated for her sacrifice as well.
Why did you opt for custom d44 for the front instead of the much stronger d60? You're building a custom axle either way, and the d60 leaves room for a lot more drivetrain options down the road, will handle big power.

Pretty much it would have been retarded expensive with the D60 both front and rear. If I feel like I need a D60 later on I'll probaby try to build on myself...or reenlist again, lol :thumb:

Been there, done that.... :roflol:
and "yeah, you guys" on the 4.88's...they'll be perfect when my V8 goes in... :guns:

First off thank you for your service.
I know of another guy on the mailing list who returned and ended up spending a lot on his Jeep as well. He went with D60's and a 5.8L.
MIT was the first one to ever do a SYE I believe. Back then, they were really expensive, I think around $600 for just the conversion. They are an old shop who's been around for a while.
Everyone likes to hate on drums but there is nothing wrong with drums. 3/4-1T drums are huge. The only downside is weight but otherwise bulletproof. I'm guessing you'll be going to an E-350 brake master since that's really popular now. I've been meening to do it myself. Parts are uber cheap. I priced a rebuilt master at $19. Another upgrade would be to go with a TJ dual-diaphram booster as well.
I'd go with tube fenders up front since that's legal. Then go with something like a crusher corner and steel flare. I'd even consider going with a Gen-Right stretch kit to give you a bit more wheelbase. That's one of the things I'd like to do.
Still, even with a V8, I would have gone with 5.13's. You're are in CA where it's all about rocks and crawling. Although you are going to have to do a transmission swap and could go with a NV4500 to get the lower first or go auto and let the TC do the work.

Or use a 4:1 ratio in the transfer case does miracles for rockcrawling

35" tires, 4:10 and an automatic seems to do just fine in low range. I'd rather have lower gears for the highway, but for the rocks they work fine. For comparison my last rig had 37" tire, 5:38's and an automatic - the YJ seems pretty similiar.

Most of the guy's I know out here shoot for at least 100:1 low crawl ratio. I know a couple guy's with 2.5L's who are around 200:1. They make for some SMOOTH crawling. They seem to just walk up stuff bigger Jeeps have trouble with.

So you mean:
4.88 axles,
2.72 or so (4.0 if upgraded) t-case,
4.0+ doubler/crawl box,
and 3.56 or something first gear ratio? Can't exactly remember...
With those basics you'll get to 200:1, right? Isn't there a doubler that is at 6:1? If that's true then a 4:1 t-case and that would get you to 400:1!
Sorry about that... but it sounds like jetcracker has a plan! I'm sure he's leaving out some details though...
Also, Thanks for serving the country!

2.8:1 1st gear
2.72:1 low range
4.11:1 diff gears
approx 2:1 TC ratio
That gets me just under 100:1 ;) If you run an auto you get a "free" nearly 2:1 reduction from the torque convertor when it's not locked.

Hey, jetcracker....
I feel your pain main, i'm still stuck over here in the same SH** HOLE...only got about another 60 days left then i can finally go back to my darling TJ...lol...i got stuck in one of those 15 month rotations (yeah, i'm army...lol) so i had some extra cash going on midtour...threw some $$ into my heep...had me a good old redneck time with my old man, drinking beer and working on the jeep...can't wait til i can get back and get moving on it again....ever notice how the work never seems to end once you start upgrading?

Even with the 2:1, it's only 62:1 which is still pretty far off 100:1. Actual gearing is still only 31:1. :hump:

Ugg - bad math.
This is on the list of next mods ;)

I, too, thank you for your willingness to defend us, and the sacrifice your family makes.
And, what you are doing reminds me of what I was doing while in Vietnam. I was not married, but had a 55 chevy 2door wagon (not a Nomad) that I was building up to 525 hp with the 327 I had put in it before I was drafted. With a GTO 4 speed and 4:46 posi rear end already there. the "combat pay" of 125 bucks a month was going into the parts and balancing and blueprinting of the engine, and the Scheifer steel fiber clutch system. My brother had the engine back from Oregon Engine Center in Portland OR, the clutch system there, and withing 3 days when I came home on leave for my six months back "in country" after my first year there, she was running. First outing after a break in of a few days: A brand new 69 GTO driven by a guy with his girlfriend tucked up next to him. Blew his doors of so easy! He would not even look at us!
Anyway, have fun when you first get to drive your Jeep!

Chuck just remember stak boxes do not like flat towing it does not have an oil pump in it to lune it and unlike a lot of old spicer granny boxes it doesn't have a lot of gears spinning while towing to lube the internals of the box
