I'm lookin into doin 31's in the near future, mainly cause I can't do an axle swap anytime soon. As far as I know, I have stock everything for suspension. But it all seems to be in good condition (not saggin or spongy). Would I be alright runnin 31's with just TJ flares and probably a 1" BL, too?

i threw 31's on my bone stocker 99 with no issues whatsoever (albeit a slight decrease in MPG). further mods (down the road) will bump me up a size (or two) but 31's are fine for now. toss in a small lift and you are good to go. cheers. OH,..and change your speedo gear accordingly.

i have 31's on my 1990 yj with 2.5 inch lift.... but if your leafs haven't sagged much and you get tj flares you should be OK... a tj has more room stock by the way

I'm running 31s with a 1" body lift and about 1.5" daystar shackles on stock springs....my 2" BDS kit should be here tommrrow (green YJ heh)

Thx for the input. I would like to do a lift but i dont really feel its worth it. What I really want to do is a 4" suspension, 1" Body, TJ flares, and 35's. But with that comes swapping the axles, which I cant do for quite awhile. That and I dont think its really practical to do a 2" lift and then do a 4" later. So I guess I'll try doin the BL and flares. Unless someone has another opinion?

You can always do a 2" BB lift. (Not BL) Once you go with a suspension lift you can either remove them or use then to regain some lift lost by adding winches and bumpers.
The best option would be to go with some ACOS adjustable spacers. That would also allow you to fine tune your lift to account for lean. Although they aren't cheap.
For some reason I saw TJ flares and was thinking TJ....
You can also fit 31's with no lift but you'll probably get some rubbing when offroad.
I'd just do TJ flares for now. That should give you 2" of clearance. Forget the body lift and shackles etc... till you figure out what suspension you want.
If you really want 4" +1" later then I'd highly consider doing a SOA on your existing springs. Some welding is required but you've got time.

Body lift and flares will work very well for 31s on a YJ.

arent the rear wheel wells on the TJ larger? won't he have to cut the wheel well out to get the TJ flare to fit?

He will want to cut BOTH wheelwell openings. There is no point in using TJ flares unless you cut the stock fender openings up.

thought so, just making sure HE is aware of what he doing before he goes spending hard earned cash!

here is the gist of what is involved in tj flares on a yj. http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/body/tj_flares_yj/

Thanks a lot for the input, very helpful. Yeah I know whats involved with the flares, been lookin into for a while. Thanks for lookin out though :thumb:. I figured I'd do the BL just to gain some extra room. Besides I really planned on doin it anyway, wether I have a 4" suspension or not. Figured I could get away with the 1", dont trust anymore than that on a body lift. For the SOA though, I thought there was a lot more involved because of spring warp (I think thats what its called).

Here's my 94 with stock suspension. All I've done is trim about 3/4" from flares. I'm thinking about going the TJ flare route though.

I'm running 31s on a stock YJ and I get some rubbing. I'm planning to go RE 2.5" with the 31s, and then add 1" BL if I ever decide to go 33s. My jeep has stock 4.10 gears and the 38 tooth speedo gear is dead on accurate with the 31s (verified with a GPS).

Here is mine with TJ Flares, 4" RC Lift, 1" Shackle lift, set on 31's for now. Extra extensions on the front for 2 more inches of flex.

I used to run 31's on only a 1.5" shackle, it extends the wheelbase slightly under compression and keeps it from rubbing. I also removed the trackbars and sway bar and had great flex, now that the Cheep hs grown (SOA, 34's, Etc.) I at times miss my low center of gravity. Heck at times I think I had more fun sitting low than I have now.

I thought several times about going SOA but everytime one of my buddies who used to have "LCG" reminds me of the $$$ he put in his after going SOA. He said it seems like there's no end to upgrading it and he misses just going out and having fun rather than everyone "expecting" him to make every hill. I too, have aq lot of fun with mine and am afraid if I do very many more mods, it will be a money pit. :'( As if it isn't already!!!!

well thanks for all the replies and info. Yeah any thought I've had recently is in the back of my head right now. First I gotta fix my piece and find time to do anything on it. A lot goin on right now. But I dont really know if I will go soa, mainly cause it does seem like a lot of work and things to watch out for. Maybe when I hopefully move next year and get another car. I'll still take any experience and/or info on this though.
