Title: for people who had computer problems
Post by: tallrugbyguy on November 18, 2008, 05:27:57 PM
hey
for people who had computer problems, did you hear a ticking before the engine light came on?
i think my computer is gone (and a mechanic confirmed this) but i was just wondering if anyone ever heard a ticking sound that would happen before the engine light comes on. it seems to come from the fuse box under the hood........

mine did that for about six months it would not  start until the ticking noise was made then it would start then one day nothing it turned over but was not getting fuel or spark so my guess after replacing just about every fuse and all the relays was that the computer was gone it still turns over but i get no engine light, everything else works but it wont fire so i am replacing the computer if i dont do the 4.0 swap which i really dont wanna do but i do have the motor already.......good luck with that......P III

Mine also behaved like that for a while.  Then the light would not come on at all when it got worse.

That 'ticking' noise may be your fuel pump bringing up the fuel pressure.  Mine was pretty noisy and getting worse, so I replaced it.  I can still hear it, but I have to really listen.

I had this problem with my 95yj. After spending $150 on a used computer from a 94 (which was doin the same thing just not as bad) i replaced the capacitors in my original computer. Works fine now.

Were the caps leaky or mushroomed at all?

sorry for the late reply but no, the caps were not deformed. I did cut one apart to see what was inside and it just looked like hardened play-doh. I bought another computer from Davy's jeeps but that one was bad too so I rebuilt my old one. I'll put new capacitors in the other one and try to sell it.
