Hi All,
I am just curious about the possibility of swaping in a newer 2.4l engine from chry/dodge/jeep into an 03-06 TJ. I have read about the clearance issues with the turbo version, but in theory would it be pretty simple to actually swap the non-turbo 2.4 into a newer TJ? They are essentially the same engine, so I would believe they would fit with no problem, and also be compatible with the AX-5, is that true?
Thanks

You'll have to mix and match parts with your current 2.4L and the new 2.4L to get something that works. Still you will run into some clearance issues since you're dealing with a transverse engine and a N-S engine. AirSierra did a turbo swap he had to reverse the exhaust manifold to work. He has the brackets CNC machined which are really nice.
Here's his build: http://www.reno4x4.com/forum/turbocharged-2-4-me-t5362.html?t=5362
Keep in mind he kept his 2.4L core and head BUT even if you swap them you'll run into the same problems.
BTW: the 2.4L never used the AX-5. The 2.4L does not share the same bolt pattern as the 2.5L and as such used a new bell housing on a new NV1500 transmission.

the lsoo5 and 2006 models use the 6 speed that's the same as the 6 cyl model nv 370 trans

Cool, so to get this straight, since I have a 2.4l 06. I have the NSG 370 Tranny. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes.
The AX-5 and the NV1500 are 5-speeds. (which is why I assumed you had a NV) The NSG370 is a 6-speed.
