Title: POWER to MANUAL steering
Post by: BIG PERV on November 29, 2005, 01:00:20 AM
Hey All!

NEW GUY FIRST POST.

I picked up a 90 YJ for $750, already had a 3" body lift and a new set of 33's, so I basically got a new set of tires and a Jeep to go with them.  Quickly discovered how anemic this 4 banger is on power.

My YJ is equipped with Power Steering.  I have run into 2 problems with this, noboby makes a header to throw on for the power steering models, and it robs even more power.  I was thinking of pulling the power steering, and putting in the manual steering gear.  My thinking was to pick up a couple of ponies, and be able to add headers later on.  Anybody recommend it or done it?  Looks like I would have to do my electric fan same time to get rid of both pullies.

Also I keep seeing stuff about a different throttle body, I understand mine is a different set up to do this, how hard/easy is it to change my set up to a 91 or better set up?  Would I see much gain from it?

Thanks

Well, I would not recommend swapping to manual steering.  WIth 33's it's borderline.  Offroad, you'll really want P/S.  If you never go offroad then it won't matter that much.  If you sell the Jeep, you'd get more with P/S.

Swapping to MPFI would be a midsize project.  You'd need the gas tank, fuel pump, tank skidplate, fuel lines, PCM, engine harness, fuel rail, intake, and some other odds and ends.  You'll gain an honest 12hp though.

33's on a TBI would be kind of pushing it.  I think I'd go with 31's with a stock Jeep if you won't want any major power drop.
