I love magnaflow the sound a look and quality. I have love the sound of every vehicle I have put them on including other 4 cylinders. My cat is rusted and is in very bad shape I was thinking of cutting it off and just putting a round magnaflow muffler in its place, if its too raspy and ricy sounding I will put a new cat on later. Just getting some of your input on what these engines sound like with mufflers etc.

I am running the Banks stinger and the guts of my Cat (honeycomb structure) have blown out. In a word, it's LOUD. I have a soft top, so I don't get much sound dampening. I have trouble talking on the cell phone when running at highway speeds. I prefer less noise, but my 19 year old son thinks it's really cool. I guess it depends on how old you are...

I'm running the Magnaflow high flow cat with their stainless catback exhaust, it sounds pretty aggressive and has a nice growl during accel but if you run with no cat at all it may be too loud, being it may cause it to drone even more. I would recommend getting their cat also, fits like a charm and cost only 110 bucks.

On my YJ I was running the flow pro, and no cat.... It was loud on the take off, but really leveled out once you got going down the road. Out on the trail, it sounded really good. I had several people tell me that they thought I was running a 6 cylinder... Nice low tone when crawling, but would sound like a pissed off weed eater once I got down in it..
I liked it... And I am 40 yrs old.. :smokes:
But I have to admit that I like the flow master on my V8 in my new buggy alittle bit better. :doggy:

I've got their XL muffler on mine and like it quite a bit. I had a tailpipe before, now it's dumped and it's hard to say what I liked better. It's defenitely louder and seems to sound more aggressive dumped. But I liked how subtle it was with a tailpipe, it had a nice mellow note, and less noise at highway speeds. I'm thinking I want that tailpipe again...
I bet that with no cat and the XL muffler you'd get a good sound without being too loud :smokes:

I run no cat and a parts-store OEM replacement muffler, it's a lot louder than stock.

Too bad I can't dump the cat on my 00 or I'll throw a code. Then it goes into rich mode and kills mileage. On top of that then I don't know if another code comes up because the check engine light is always on. Does anyone know a way around this other than checking your codes every week?

YES, Do this to your 91 YJ :hump: :blbl: :fish:

If there was support for jeep ecm's like chevys you could get it flashed to not use the after cat oxy sensor.. but i don't know if anyone does it for jeeps...
-
all you have to do is place a resistor in the return voltage line form the o2 sensor that fools it into thinking the signal is correct.

My cat was leaking bad so I cut it off along with the turbo muffler and ran a glasspack dumped. WOW! was that loud in the winter with a hard top on. The sound tone wasn't too bad outside but a little ricey for me. It also had a backlash when I let off an acceleration and shifted. Inside the Jeep with the hard top on, the drone was unbearable. I then added the stock tail pipe which mellowed the drone down a bit but didn't change the tone or the backlash. I found out after I cut everything out that it was actually the stock donut in front of the cat that was leaking. I then cut the donut flange off an welded the cat back in place with the cherry bomb glasspack. I now have a little better growl without the loud drone in the cab with the hard top. The tone is OK but I guess I'm used to my Chevy 2500HD 8.1L/496ci V8. LOL !

Newer converters aren't that restrictive, I wouldn't sweat it. I may put one back on someday, little too loud without it.

I'd just replace the cat. I replaced mine a few months ago with a Magnaflow I picked up for $65.00. I took the old cat to the scrap yard and they gave me $35.00 for it. Only paid $30.00 for the new cat when all was said and done. It's worth it. It sounded like crap without it. I'm running a Thrush turbo muffler now along with the new Magnaflow cat and it sounds great.

Where can you get a high flow magnaflow one for 65?!? The least Ive found around here is like around 100.

I had to drill and weld a bung in for the o2 sensor between the cat and muffler but it worked great.

why does it say its for only the 97-99 wrangler 2.5?

Not sure. I had no problems with it on my 02. I cut the old cat off of the flange and then welded the new cat back to the flange. No problemo. ;)
