Hello,
I've got a 1994 YJ witht he 2.5 engine and I often get a terrible squealing noise at startup and on cold mornings. If I shit into neutral, the noise goes away. Sometimes the squeal goes away after a second, other times it persists for several minutes as I drive. I have replaced the serpentine belt and I've attempted to adjust the tension at the power steering pump/pulley. This helped some. Could this squeal be something else? (possibly harmonic ballancer/crank pulley?) How do I tell if the power steering pump is bad and needs replacement?
Thanks,

It means you need to tighten your serpentine belt.

My PS pump just went out on me last week @ 283k miles. It was making a grinding type noise. Try taking the belt off and turning the pully on the PS pump, alternator, water pump and the idler to see if one of them isn't hard to turn or rough feeling as you turn it, if so replace the bad part. Then get a new belt and reinstall. Keep the old one for a spare, never know when it'll come in handy. :)
