when i replaced the lifters several were collapsed but there was no wear on the base that rides on the cam. i did not notice any abnormal wear on the pushrods, or rockers. after start up it was pretty quiet but as it reaches temp it starts to tick again. not bad but not totally fixed. what did i miss? i will pull the valve cover tomorrow and inspect all again . any suggestions? i do not have an exhaust leak and i assume that the cam is ok because of no wear on the lifters.i have isolated the ticking to some cyl3 but mostly cyl4 topend. if the pushrod, rocker, or valve tip is worn bad enough to tick will it be easy to see? i just picked up a few new rockers but had to order pushrods. i need to know if the wear will be noticeable or if one can't tell just by eye. can the valve or spring cause a tick?

Have you inspected the exhaust manifold closely enough to rule that out as your tick?
Try running a quart of ATF in the crankcase in place of a quart of oil, usually does the trick for a stuck lifter.

I'd probably try this. You can also use Sea Foam. I'd stay away from Engine Restore and only use it as a last resort but not for a ticking top end.

I wouldn't use engine restore just spreads a layer of sludge everywhere...

my lifters are new they should not be stuck. later this week i will pull the cover off again to check all parts for wear. i have new pushrods and rockers to install if needed and i will pull the lifters again to check them, they only have about 150-200 miles on them. what else could it be? is it possible that the valves could be the culprit? low spring pressure or bad seats? wear on the valve tip? it does not smoke at all, on startup or otherwise. this is the third 2.5 i have owned and the only one to tick. i bought one new in 98 and put 4", 33's, 120k+miles, and 4 junk auto trannys in it with zero engine problems or noises. the next was a yj i only had for a few weeks but at least 3 people in the club have owned it since. it currently has a 9" and d44 from a bronco with 37"boggers. it gets beat on every few days in a drunken rage... STILL NO TICKS ??? darn motor runs perfect!

Yeah I got the same damn thing going on. I put some engine treatment in the crank case about 100 km's ago, tomorrow I plan on seafoaming it and hoping for the best.

Well Keep us updated... I have the same problem, on startup is fine, but after warm up it starts ticking. I thought it might be lifters also, but when you find something out let us know

FWIW, I can offer an opinion as to the cause of ticking lifters but it won't be worth much unless you've just replaced or are about to replace them.
The best prevention that I've found in my 45-odd years of wrenching is to keep CLEAN oil in the motor. So basic, it's overlooked by most folks but I'm convinced that nasty oil (i.e. infrequent oil changes) will clog lifters up to the point that many never recover. Usually, you'll notice the onset of the problem on the first cold morning in the life of the engine, and the problem never goes away.
In most cases, they'll quiet down once they're warmed up, but will knock on startup every day it's cold.
Like I said, FWIW. When I get mine back from the machine shop and start driving it, I'll keep track through the summer and winter and if any noise crops up, I'll post and we can chat some more. (Put my own theory to the test is only fair, ain't it?)

i had somewhat of the same problem. my problem was a defect piston from factory. .003 smaller than rest and heard it is kinda common. sounded like lifter but gets louder and louder .i also replaced my lifters and it took some noise away but in the end had to pull my motor. and start fresh
