Title: Lift and SYE
Post by: Bikerjr1 on January 17, 2009, 08:21:38 AM
I searched through the forums and can't really find the answer as to how much suspension lift you can go before you need or have to go the SYE route.  The best I could come up with is 4".  I'm looking at replacing the stock springs and lift shackles on my 93' YJ sometime this year.  I don't really want the expense of having to go to a SYE.  MML would be a option.  I am running 33's and not going any bigger, I think.  I already have a body lift installed (1-2").  I had the axles re-geared so they are gonna be there awhile.  Any input would be helpful.  Off road I go through way more mud holes and trail roads than I climb rocks.  Also I pull a small 10' travel trailer with it.
thanks,
JR

You're OK at 2.5"  anything bigger than that starts causing problems.

Most 4" kits come with a transfer case drop to lower the belly skid 1".  This works fine until you're ready to plunge into a SYE and CV driveshaft.

I think you would need the TC drop for any lift over 2.5".

Every Jeep is different. I needed the TC drop with a 2.5" lift, and I eventually got the SYE/CV to get rid of the drop and gain some clearance back.

IMO, I would skip the shackle lift and get some 2.5" springs, with a 1" body lift you'll clear the 33's just fine. A TC drop should get rid of any vibes so you won't need the SYE right away. If you still wanted one later on, you can get the SYE for about $180 and a CV shaft for about $75 if you find a used one.

I also needed a t-case drop for my 2.5 lift. its the 1 thing i really hate about my jeep acts like a big shovel in the snow and likes to slide on the rocks and threaten high centering. but you could go with a motor mount lift rather than the tcase drop to not use a sye..

I think that I like the idea about using a MML instead of lowering the TC.  I will keep thinking on it but will probably end up with 2" springs and 1-2" on the body.
thanks all,
JR

If you do an MML, make sure you get a new transmount.  MML's put a fair amount of stress on the transmount.

does that mean just get a new replacement or are there new stronger one that should be gotten? (i ask because i am thinking of going this route and just replaced my trans mount. )

I'd go with a poly mount, be a smart idea to shim it like you shim an axle - but they don't seem to shim or angle most MML's either.
