Title: Catalytic Converter Q?
Post by: jcsanders79 on January 17, 2009, 01:05:39 PM
I need a new catalytic converter.  Looking for feedback on the "high flow" aftermarket ones.  Should I buy a random technologies, magnaflow or just get what ever is cheapest at the muffler shop?  Its a 97 with a chip, header, CAI, bored TB, TBS, ford injectors and an electric fan.http://

I'd go with a Carsound/Magnaflow.  They not only flow better but are smaller as well.

Check with www.jcw.com as they used to have pretty cheap converters.

I went with Magnaflow when I replaced mine. Easy install and it's compact.

Thanks, the magnaflow was what I was leaning towards.

Not to hijack the thread, but is it possible to change the cat converter myself if I dont have welding equipment?  I guess not, but it's worth asking...  My cat sounds like a jingle bell, so I am guessing something's wrong with it, and I want to go the high-flow way (magnaflow, to be specific).

Yeah my 91 just unbolts on the front  and I have mine welded but you could just use an exhaust clamp and weld it later if it leaks

On a YJ it's bolt-on.  Two bolts on the front and a clamp at the back.  I've had mine for years with no leaks.  It's also easier if you're replacing the rest of teh exhaust or you've already gone with a cat-back that is clamped on.

I'm pretty sure mine was welded on when they did the crappy wok on the exhaust (they fixed most of it free of charge, but I am not sure they fixed this).  Guess I'll have to take a look andfind out next weekend...

I can tell you that my TJ's welded on.  I prefer it that way, not to expensive to have it welded on either.

I like mine bolted on so that when it gets damaged, I can easily remove it.  Not to mention, my Cat-back has a lifetime warranty which I've had to replace on a few occasions.  Clamped properly, it won't leak.

TJ's have and a few different setups.  I think the earlier ones are bolt-on while the later ones are welded to the head pipe...

My 02 is a bolt on. When I replaced my cat. I cut the old one off and welded the new one to the flange.
