Title: 4.2L
Post by: Nilistic on January 24, 2009, 12:30:13 PM
Looking @ a jeep with 125,000 miles and a 4.2L TB injected motor. 5spd appears all stock. wants $1300. What do you think? good deal or no?

I'm interested in the motor. is it just as "bulletproof" as the 4.0L ? anything I should need replaced? chain, etc...?

Any know problems with 4.2L ?

Thanks so much

The 4.2L is the predecessor to the 2.5L and the 4.0L.  Yes, they are tough engines.  They are low on HP but they are up on torque.  Most are around 113hp and something like 230tq.

What year jeep?

HP is probably up a bit since it's been converted to TBI, as the 4.2L was originally a carb'ed engine.  The 4.2L is a good engine.

The MPG of the 4.2L is comparable to the 4.0L?

What kinda work need to be done to these motors? time chain? etc...

No, the 4.2L is usually around 12-16mpg with some mileage.  BUT thats with the Carb.  TBI is aftermarket so it might be 14-17mpg.  16-18 or so on the 4.0L but you could get that with a MPFI or even a TBI depending on your gearing and the mileage of the engine.
