Title: Score
Post by: damon54 on January 24, 2009, 10:30:13 PM
Patience is a virtue.  Just found and purchased dana 44/ford 9 in combo with 5:38 gears and set up for YJ SOA lift from a full width bronco for $1200 in Nashville TN.  Score for the home team.  Just figured I would share my good fortune with you all  .

I was stuck working in western Ky for 3 months and I found them on craigslist in Nashville.  Instead of flying back home to Orlando I picked up a uhaul and axles and drove home.  The front is open and the rear is locked.

That's a nice score!  What kind of locker did it come with, and what condition where they in?

Scratch that, it's not a locker it's a full spool.  I hear road driving, especially turning can be tricky with a spool but I am willing to try it out before I change (it is not my DD).  The pinions rotate with no problems and the brakes are complete.  The hubs on the 44 seem to engage with no problem.  They both look really clean.  I'm gonna change the fluid in them and take a peek under the covers before I bolt them up to the jeep.  I got burned on a couple of 44's i bought local, one was covered in grease so I couldn't tell the housing was cracked and another one had been a full size ford shortened for a bronco II.  The tubes and the housing were good, with the flat top knuckles be the shafts were shot.  I was going try to piece together one good axle out of the spare parts until I saw this deal.  Glad to see the responses are from the square headlight crowd.

Great score. My wife always wonders why I monitor craigslist when I don't "need" anything but you never know when you will find something like those axles.

Good deal!  I've got a brand new D44 front housing smoked out but until my wife gets a job its going to sit!

I check Craigslist more than my email.  It's the greatest thing ever invented, well, besides bacon flavored salad dressing.

I run spools on both ends of my DD, no worries.

Great find. What size tire are you running or going to run?
Is the D44 a LP or a HP? I thought they were LP.

Good to know.  Now all I have to do is put the yj back together.  What kind of lift are you running?

Its HP.  I am gonna put some 35's on it.

If you have soft springs and sticky tires a spool can cause one side of the axle to walk forward while turning - ask me how I know ;)
If your tires give then you'll get the chirp-chirp around the corners, not too bad
If you are half way in between then you will sometimes be lucky enough to twist the splines on your axle shafts - I managed to get 1/4 turn once without breaking

I havent got tires or wheels for it yet.  Everything I've got is 5 on 4.5 and the axles are 5 on 5.5.  I'll probably get some black steelies and post up about tire choices.  I've got a pretty good set up, I just have to put it all together now.  My springs are new, less than 1000 miles.
