Title: junk yards....what to grab while your there?
Post by: cletz97 on February 02, 2009, 01:48:03 AM
this is something ive really have been wondering about

some of u experienced guys, what should i grab or anyone grab if they come across a wrecked jeep with a good engine?

4.0 and 2.5

cause some guys (like me) don't have junk yards that close, this probably would be a good thing to know while u make the big trip out there
also any tools that should be brought along, that would be allowed.

i figured this would help more than just me

any input would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Spare transfercase, front axle shafts, XJ front driveshafts.  Those are my usual items to look for at the u-pull.

D44 rear from a 87-89 XJ-MJ, or 98 and later TJ.
4.0 TB
E-fan
It would depend on what you need.
Tools,  a set of sockets and wrenches, screwdriver, some pliers.

be sure to have some vice grips and a big hammer... vice grips have gotten me out of amny situations and the hammar is good for taking your anger out on other none needed parts. and basicaly what fourbangeryj said.

I'd be looking for axles.  1/2-1T's.  Dana 44's, 60's and Ford 9's.  York A/C Compressor or a OEM Sanden.  Maybe a spare windshield frame with glass.  Hard top, Full doors, half doors, CJ rear tailgate, CJ front clip.   If there are any big rig's then air tanks.

Ford Design III injectors in 19, 24 and 36psi.  Ford V6 and V8 electric fans.

NV231-D out of a Dodge.  If they have a RAM 1500, you could see about getting the engine (316), transmission (NV3500) and transfer case(NVG231-D) or salvaging what you can from it for a swap.  NV4500's would probably be a rare sight but you might find one in a Dodge or Chevy 3/4-1T.

Basically, keep an open mine and look at everything while you're there.  Some things jsut sort of pop into your mind while browsing.

Dikes (diagonal cutters) would be helpful as well as a hack saw.  Cold chisel, 3lbs sledge, impact driver. Box and crescent wrenches as well as sockets, extensions, universals, breaking bar with pipe extension.
