I am in the market for a new muffler. I am wanting to buy one that is quiet. I am not concerned about what kind of better performance I can get.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bill

A stock one from the dealer.

The auto parts stores carry a stock replacement, not sure if it's the same as the dealer carries but I'm sure it's a helluva lot cheaper.
-
I'm going to be switching back to a stock one as well. My flowmaster 60 drives me nuts.
Provides a nice mellow exhaust tone outside for a performance sound that's not over-the-top loud
LOL. Should read - Almost like having no muffler at all, even at idle.
-
My flowmaster was loud as well. Good thing their factory welds suck because when it broke that allowed me to buy a Borla! Although interesting enough, the Borla esonated (@4000RPM) with my Jacobs/MSD ignition setup. That stopped when I switched over to the PD ignition.

I'm running a cherry bomb Vortex muffler and no it's NOT the red typical cheery bomb muffler!!! thought still is a little louder with stock exhaust ex: stock manifold & stock size pipes but isn't to bad. not like most performance mufflers!! but after when i put a rebuilt engine in my YJ I installed a pacesetter header and super high flow cat. it barks very nicely when your foot in to the floor lol.
I had gone through several of those cheep parts store stock replacements aluminized mufflers and they would rot out or rattle with in a few months of use. I was fed up with them. that's the only reason I went with the cherry bomb vortex it's a much heavier made muffler. also if it ever back fired it would swell them up.
but I like the louder sound with my header and high flow exhaust. so in my opinion go dealer and get the stainless one or find the aftermarket heavy one that has the most baffles in it!!!

Hmm, that's sort of how the Borla is. If you look through it, you can see light.
Another option if a performance muffler is too loud, you can run a small Cherry bomb glasspack inline with the muffler to quiet it. They used to do this with older VW's.

or just a resonator before the muffler. thats what we have on own cj's so that they are quit for hunting

What is a resonator?

Looks like a small glasspack, Flowmaster and other manufacturers carry them. A catalytic converter serves the same purpose, that's why a muffler will be louder without the converter.
I've seen guys run just the converter and it is relatively quiet compared to open exhaust.

Think of the resonator as a pre-muffler.
-
Thanks guys. Is this resonator something I can get at a local auto parts store?
-
I like the Borla cat-back ok for the durability. And it's generally quieter than the Dynomax setup I had previously.
If you live in an urban area, the Borla sound may be a little much for you and police/prius drivers. Winding out the engine will definitely set off car alarms etc. But the 4 banger sounds good with it
If I was really thinking about going quiet while maybe keeping a little high end performance, I might consider a borla/banks header and then a stock or muffler shop exhaust with all the baffles in it, etc. But I don't know if that's a particularly great idea.

They will usually point you to Cherry Bomb Glasspacks as these are used as resonators. They are illegal as mufflers.

Where are these illegal as mufflers? I run them as my mufflers on 3 different vehicls and don't have any problems w/ inspections or anything w/ them around here.

Illegal in some states for road use, illegal on any USFS and most state land unless you also run some sort of spark arrestor.

All USFS areas. Most recently, ID wants to ban them. (http://www.fortmilltimes.com/124/story/464760.html) This is where most if not all states can get you if they they enforce it.
