Ok guys I finally killed my 2.5L 5speed,and am going to be doing a swap for more power.Decided to throw a mpi 4.3 in it am wondering what trans would be a good one to go with, and what kind of donor it would come out of(junk yard parts)want to stay in a 5 speed.I use this for my DD and a mild wheeling session from time to time,so i want it strong(only want to tear it down once).I live in northern ohio and any help as to where to find it and what i am looking for would be great.Keep in mind i need to keep this on a meager budget to keep the wife happy.
-
BTW it's a 95 YJ (235thousand mi on it when it gave out)and the plan is for a 4 inch lift and 33in tires so still want to achieve decent gas mileage(able to use 5th gear on the highway)and plenty of grunt when its buried up to the body in mud.
-
the 4.3L GM engine? if so I'm pretty sure you could use any older manual that fit a v8. but don't under stand why you wouldn't go 4.0L with the ax15?
-
The 4.3L uses the same bell housing bolt pattern as the V8's so you can mix and match to your delite. Although, I wouldn't discount the 4L60E either. It's a slushbox but a very good one.

I had one of them apart on my bench just a few weeks ago.. there not to bad but I hate auto's no fun lol
-
yes the 4.3 gm. my buddy just did a 4.3 to 350 swap in his 2002 extreme S-10 and said i could have the 4.3 ecm harness, and mounts the whole works for free 30thou on that motor!sometimes i do have a bit of good luck.not into trannys so i know nothing about them or what will mate up with my np231.
-
no autos for me!!not so concerned about the front end it's picking the right one tht will match up with the transfer case and not run all the way to the rear axel.looking for a short one to get more driveshaft length.any ideas?

this is exactly why i want strong and manual.those transmissions you can flush! :flush:i had one let me down in my blazer.
-
what year of blazer?
-
97 it was a 4L60E though.still something in the valve body gave out and cost me a bundle.
-
sounds about right lol.
I have been looking throw my gm access site and depending on years of truck there is a lot of different standards. not sure witch trans would be the best. never seen a standard truck come in for anything other then a clutch..
-
also very rare to see a standard in one to begin with you pretty much have to order the truck in to get on off the lot
-
this is what i'm saying.they build strong 5 speeds! I think they came in some of the w/t.doen't have too be a gm tranny but thats the motor i want in there, any sugestions on a tranny?you can't find a junk yard ax15 in my area,or any wranglers(or parts) in a junk yard in my area. this is why i'm asking what trans would be a good one and what should i be looking for in the bone yard to take it out of to fit in my jeep between the np231 and my new(to me) vortek 4.3
-
Look for a 231c, same transfer case as yours but bolts to a GM transmission.
I may have the front have a 231c around here somewhere, then you can use the internals and rear case half of your 231j.
I'm seriously thinking about a 4.3/4L60e/231c swap, there's two on the local boards for sale, $600 and $450 complete with harness and CPU. May just get them and store them until needed.
-
Where is this local board??? i'm needing one right now!!! and this is what i'm looking for except the 4L60E.
-
if you could find the 5 speed and np231c that comes behind the 4.3l i would use that.. my dd is a 94 s10 4.3 with the 5 speed and the tranys never let me down in 163K miles.
-
Well, you could run an SM465. They were in GM trucks and Suburbans up until '91 and have a 6.55 1st gear if I remember correctly. Granted, you'll have to use an adapter to fit it to the T-case, but the 465s are very strong and have a main case length of just over 12". If you want more info on them, there are a couple pages on the Novak site.

Then your asking the wrong question you need to find out whats available and then go from there. and find out what would work best with what is around
-
Ya know, thats just the trans i ended up with.A buddys dad had one "under the bench" in his garage out of a plow truchk he used to have! :clap:looks like this might just get done with a sensable budget.
-
Ok here this the list and the question.1995 Yj rio grand(gonna end up with 4"lift and 33s), 1997 4.3L gm vin code W (engine, harness, ecm turns out my setup came out of his dads c1500 and not his extreme)sm465 trans, stock transfer case, and stock axles(for now).has anyone done this swap?If so please help me out,Novak adapter(motor mounts, trans to tranfercase) or advanced? Also how far forward(or back) did ya mount the motor(also did ya go to the pass side with it or dead center)?got all the parts tracked down just a little lost with where exactly to put the thing.the tub and front end are setting in the garage next to it as well(just ryno lined and looks to be alot easier to work on in this state).also would it be easier to use the stock manifolds or get a set of headers(for clearance)?
