Title: Got a trailer
Post by: jagular7 on April 09, 2009, 07:45:08 AM
Got it off the local CL.

No lights, but connector and wiring are there. Couple reflectors missing. Complete tongue is there. Parking brake works. Looked like something was welded to the top rail at the corners. Couple extra holes here/there (in odd places). Bed is complete and drains work well. Looks like stock shocks. No rust through. Bent fender on one side. Odd 'new' tires that show surface cracking. More pics (http://"http://s566.photobucket.com/albums/ss101/the_jag/M416/").
Overall a real good foundation. Need to dismantle, sandblast and repaint. I do need to get a top for it.

Saw on the KC CL the other day someone looking for a M416. I thought of getting in touch to see if I could double/triple my money with no effort. But decided......nah.

No, I didn't get it for $100.

Nice.  I've always wanted one of those

Pretty nice one just north of here.  Looks like someone cut out the front and rear of the box though.

I also picked up a HF 40x48 (1200#) trailer with a spare. I then purchased a large car top luggage carrier for real cheap. It needs hinges.

The idea is to have a luggage trailer for the hotel runs or a trip to the store....not much at all space in the rear seat area of the TJ.
I wouldn't mind bending some sheetmetal to put something like this together

on the frame.

MC use trailers like this

This one was listed for $650 in the CL.

They make a carrier that just plugs into your receiver hitch too if you want something smaller for like grocery runs and such.

I have been wanting a trail trailer for a few years. I have not looked real hard for the military stuff. It seems that they are a bit pricey near me and need a fair amount of work.
I think I am going to scatch build one. If I ever get around to it. That way I can build it the way I want VS. modify a already built one.

What are your plans for it?

I had one of those hitch trays since 93. It does its job, but with the spare limites the amount I can carry and how to carry it. Strapping large items down is easy enough, but they would have to be able to be compressed. So smaller items I can't carry. Thus the luggage trailer idea. I've been wanting something like this for several years. The sheetmetal trailer box is another idea I saw when I found the miniaturized mil trailer. Though they want over $1200 for it. Wow!!!

Plans for the M416 right now are to clean it up, blast it, and repaint the tub/fenders. The frame looks really good and I'll scratch the surface and repaint that. Get a soft top for it and I'll mostly use it to haul camping gear.

The military M416 is a 1/4ton trailer in the 550# range empty (IIRC). I had one several years ago prior. One time, I filled it with dirt for the yard. I think it held 3 yrds. It hauled it fine. I sold that years ago to someone wanting to 'finish' his show mil jeep setup. It was in real nice condition other than painted red by the rural fire dept. This one is a bit holey and it looks like there was something welded to the top rail. It does need some scrub work, but blasting it will clean it right up. I'm wanting to paint it light color so its easier to be seen at night.

The HF sheetmetal gauge trailer weighs 130#s and I can pick that up. I found a yard cart that is 58"lx34"wx15"d which should fit nicely on the HF frame. I can then raise the fenders up higher for taller tires, paint it all olive and have something like that sheetmetal mini-mil trailer. I just got to think about spending $150 for it.
