Title: humming noise I can't put my finger on
Post by: enginethatcould on June 03, 2009, 06:59:29 PM
Today my jeep developed a humming noise. I couldn't pin point it as of right now. On the way to work it started to humm in the rear of the jeep. I would accelerate and the humming would remain the same. If I would come to a complete stop, the humming was there with no increase or decrease.
On the trip home, about 20 minutes into the drive, it started again with the same characteristics. I have a feeling it is the fuel pump but I could be way off base. Any help would be greatly appreciated, TIA.

It's not drivetrain related if it's not changing with the RPM's and is in the back.

That's what I'm thinking, but would a fuel pump hum like that?

Yeah, I think it's a good bet it's the fuel pump since that's the only motor of any sort back there.

if it's about to go it will, or in some weird circumstances if it sucks in air somehow (and then will actually go soon if it runs dry) - that happened to me not with the Jeep, different vehicle, would hum when the fuel was low and breaking (the fuel would go to the front of the tank leaving the pump out of the fuel). about 5k later i had to replace it as it stopped spinning alltogether.
