Title: 97 Wrangler TJ 2.5 L Fuel Tank Not Filling
Post by: jtigerwoo on June 10, 2009, 03:39:29 PM
I can only put 8-9 gallons of fuel in my Jeep. I did verify that the fuel tank skid plate and fuel tank has no damage. It only reads approx 3/4 after each fill up.

Well, 8-9 gallons on a 14.7gal tank is about right.  Typically, you'll have anywhere from 2-5gallons left in the tank when it's on empty.

But you might have to pull the nozzle back slightly when filling it.  Otherwise try rotating the nozzle 180*.

It's a common problem.

I'd also suggest you test your indicator. Keep a 2 gal tank full in the back. Note when your gas indicator comes on with the mileage. Run till you are dry in the tank. Note the mileage again. Add gas and then go fill at gas station. You will see another 40-90 miles before you actually are empty. Then on fill up, you will see about max you can fill.

Do you know you can mod the tank easily for another 3-4 gals?
I've done the tank mod on my 97 and get another 100miles, reaching over 300 miles a tank at highway speeds.

alright I'll give it a go. As far as the tank mod it is something I would like to try just not certain of removing the tank.

I have had this problem before, i turn the handle slightly to the right, usually this stops the gas handle from kicking off so easily.  Sensors go all the time in jeep wranglers, your better off just resetting your trip on your odometer everytime you fill up.  Just remember to fill up around 275
