Title: Which rockers to buy
Post by: jfrabat on June 23, 2009, 04:31:52 PM
So, I was looking at the 4WD, 4WheelParts, Quadratec, etc. catalogues for some rocker protection, and I really liked the Poisone Spyder Ricochet Rockers, but of course, Poison Spyder is out of business, so these are IMPOSSIBLE to find (especially for a YJ).  So I was wondering what you guys would recommend for rocker protection that can also be used as a step...  I will have them lined, so the finish is not important to me.

Poison spider is back in business in California, I would look at the genright ones also
I actually manage to bend one of my poison spider ones and the tubing on them seems to dent fairly easy, or rather easier than I would like

Homebrew.  :thumb:

Regardless of the brand I would suggest the type that sits just under the tub. Works great as a step and mounts to the frame. Mine are 2x4" 1/4" wall.

X2 for the 4X4 Dr ones. I have a handful of friends that run them on their TJ's and a couple YJ/CJ guys and they look great.

But I also agree with JJ, homebrew would be nice as well  ;)

I have no welding equipment, so homebrew will be difficult...

If you don't do steps, it won't require welding.  Just cut off wheels and a grinder.  You can laos have a fabrication shop make what you want.  Might even be cheaper.

Neither did I at the time. Combined effort between my garage and my buddy's shop. Got exactly what I wanted and it was less than $200 including the steel and grip tape.  :thumb:

Why not JCR again??

I love mine...welded on to the frame since it was at their shop, but they make them bolt-on as well.

I like theirs, but I am worried that they will have to fabricate them, and I dont have that much time left (I have to ship the Jeep in August).

By the way, which type of rockers are better; the ones that bolt to the rocker itself, or the ones that bolt to the frame?  I like the rugged look of the ones that tie on to the tub/body mounts, but it seems that the ones that go to the frame may be stronger (at the cost of some height, but for me that's OK).

I have OR Fab ones and really like them.
They bolt to the frame and have a smaller tube that comes up to protect the tub. They have been tested a few times.  ::)

I prefer the ones that bolt to the tub and go all the way to the body mounts.  That way they protect from the bottom and side.

I do too.  Most of the guy's I know moved away from nerfs and sliders for just rocker guards.  I still have 3" Smittybilt nerfs that I installed in '93 so I'm behind the times or retro, depending on which way you look at it.  I want to install some rockers and then some flip-down steps.

I wish I had read this sooner. I had a 20% off discount code in my email for JC Whitney and any orders over $100 have free shipping.

X3 on the tub mounted ones. Personally I don't like the ones with the step. But I think I am in the minority on that.

How about these (http://www.quadratec.com/products/12002_912.htm)?  They are A to Z Fab rockers with "step" (at least I think they would be usefull as a step after I line them to match the bumpers).

The base pieces are 3/16" thick grade A36 structural steel with a yield strength of 40K PSI and the tube steps are made from 1.5" OD HREW STRUCTURAL round tube with a wall thickness of .120". A to Z Fabrication Rocker Guards cover 6.5" under the rocker panel and 6.25" up the side to cover as much as possible!

I think these look pretty strong...  And I WILL need somewhre to place the Hi Lift, so I think I will order some rockers.

I know two guys here that run those and are very happy with the quality of them. Their powder coat didn't last on either though so you may want to finish them yourself.

Yeah, I would order the bare steel ones and Line-X them...  That way, they would match the finish of my front bumper, and give me a bit more grip when using them as a step.

A-Z makes nice stuff. You can't go wrong with those. It's nice they can be bought unfinished.

I don't know anyone using this, but I don't live in rust country.

I just ran a bead of silicone on the top to keep sand silt out.

This stuff works well, I'm ordering soon for the steel plate I'm making to cover my rocker damage.

I know it's a little late now, but I'd like the extra piece of mind that comes with the rocker guards that also tie into the body mounts. I know Shrockworks does this, as a friend of mine just got some. I'm no longer even considering anything else unless Poison Spyder starts making them again very soon.

I'm installing a set of rock skids but these were bent in a shop to have a 45* angle at the bottom of the corner instead of the norm 90*. I'll be adding a tube bar also bent at a 45* angle to help slide on rocks and trees when at an angle. With the available material it wasn't quite big enough to cover up to the door. So I added another piece there. It was only 3" tall on the side of the body and 7" under the floor. I looked at cutting away the floor support and bolting the plate directly to the floor. I didn't cut it out. I also have to redo my body mounts as 3 rusted through the floor support. Yah, its a 97 TJ from OH.

One thing I'm curious about is the recessed bolt heads when clearly they won't interfere with anything. I'm using hex heads.

Jagular, Nth degree/AEV and Genright makes the sliders you want they call them boatside sliders. I am thinking of welding some tabs on the body mount and then simply bolting some 4" wide 6160 a;uminum flatstock on the body mounts so they dont get trashed and it will simply slide over rocks

Expensive body mounts (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=795308). $160!!

It looks like I'll be removing the middle body mount and changing the back body mount closer to the frame. I'm just bolting the skids in.

Well, my A to Z rocker panels arrived today, and they were NICE; well, nice except for a small detail: they were for a TJ unlimited, so they are going back (I actually got invoiced for the right ones, but they shipped the wrong ones!).

I hope they're paying for shipping back. They're usually good about that kind of thing.

It was quadratec, so no issues...  They sent UPS to pick up the wrong ones and already shipped out the right ones.
