Title: Argh!
Post by: Jeffy on July 11, 2009, 04:44:09 PM
ARGH!  One step forward, two steps back...  So I've rotated my tires and changed out my old transmission mounts.  Now I've got a nice vibration at 25-30mpg.  I reseated my rear tires but have to do the front again just to be sure.  I'm thinking it's the driveshaft though.  I have new U-joints for all of the shafts, which I'm hoping will fix ithe issue.  My existing U-joints are circa 1991 and sound like marbles in can when they don't sound like crushing glass.

C;mon, meow!   :ass: You've owned your Jeep for 17 years, you should be used to this kind of stuff by now  :pirate:

Yeah, it's all fine and dandy when you want the 'Jeep Experience' but what happens when you want to actually go somewhere?  I've been meaning to replace the U-joints for years but have been babying them to put it off.  When they are dry, they sound bad.

Well Jeffy, take the rear shaft out put it in 4x4 drive it and if the noise is gone you know what to do

Oh, I know where the noise had been coming from for a LONG time.  It's the vibrations that are new.  I don't really want to have to fix it since I've got other plans and don't want to dump money into something I'll be replacing later.

I'll drop the shaft and see if I still have the vibrations though.

Whoo! hoo!  I figured out the problem.  It got worse today!  Turns out the strap bolts on the rear pinion U-joint has backed out.  It got so bad that I had to coast a bit to my house.  Luckily it didn't get catastrophic with the driveshaft beating itself to death then taking out my T-case.  Although I think it's strange that the bolt backed out in the first place.

I still need to replace my U-joints and I might as well get the U bolts to replace the straps since the bolts on there might be stretched.

Now I've got a nice vibration at 25-30mpg.

the problem is you are getting way to good of millage.. cut that mpg in about half and it will be back to normal...  :roflol: :wall:
