Title: Took out new muffler
Post by: smashcoast on July 12, 2009, 06:07:09 PM
I removed my banks monster cat back muffler today and replaced it with a cherry bomb super turbo for $24.99 from pep boys and it sounds way better than that crappy Banks!

The Banks was about 8 months old and was loud and had tons of back pressure. With a soft top and bikini top it was driving me crazy, hard to hear the radio and my wife could hear me coming around the corner.

The Banks is a straight thru design like a glasspack. The CherryBomb has the u shape inside.

It now has a nice quite, slightly aggressive sound with no back pressure. I could have saved a lot of money if I didnt waste it on that Banks! :hitit:

Good to know. One of these days I am going to get rid of my Flowmaster 50. It's kinda loud. I was wondering about the Cherry Bomb stuff. But with their "disturbing the peace since 19XX" slogan makes you wonder how loud they are.
Does it have glass in it or just baffles?

Be aware that Cherry bomb glass packs are illegal in CA.  As for back pressure, you want some back pressure.  You'll lose some low end torque otherwise.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about this one http://www.cherrybomb.com/products/turbo

Ah, then that's probably OK.  Only way you can use a glasspack legally is to use it as a resonator out here.

Just baffles.

JP mag just did a cat back special and rated Banks the noisiest. They said the Dynomax Super Turbocat back was the quitest of all the ones tested and it was slightly louder than stock.

Your like me fourbangerYJ we live in SoCal and run Bikini tops most of the year so noise is a big deal to me.

I had a Dynomax Super Turbo cat back.  Maybe they've changed the design over the years, but the thing was loud as heck when I had one.  I was fairly shocked reading the test results in the JP magazine.  The Borla I bought to replace it is fairly loud too.  But seriously, I'd say the Dynomax Super Turbo was louder than the Borla.

Another deal with the Super Turbo is that it'll rust on you; that's the reason I did the Borla.

I just bought a Thrush welded muffler. I know nothing about exhaust. Haven't put it on yet. Thinking about changing the Cat as well when I have it off. Just out of curiosity, what would make my jeep backfire?

It's the muffler that causes back pressure if thats what you mean?

I was thinking about a Thrush as well, They are made by DynoMax.

Let us know how it sounds!
