Title: Firepower Ignition Kit Question
Post by: TA-YJ on August 06, 2009, 11:59:27 AM
I was looking at picking up the firepower ignition kit for my 92 YJ, but I had a question.  I have a 92 so I will need the adapter for the coil.  Has anyone installed the adapter kit?  It seems like it would be kind of a hack and splice job for something as important as ignition.  Links to the install instructions would be great if anyone has them also.  Thanks a lot.

I would go with the Performance Distributor system many of us run; it allows you to run a .060" gap no problem...  Screaming Demon Coil, LiveWires, and rotor and cap are included in the 2.5L kit.

Um, the Firepower Kit is by Performance Distributors.

I don't know what adapter he's talking about though.  There is one for TJ's I think but the YJ shouldn't need one.

*Looked at the PD website and it states there is an adapter BUT I never used one and I have a '92.  Mine's is the pre-production kit that all of the other 2.5L's are based on.

Thanks for the quick replies.  I Guess I will go ahead and order it w/o the adapter and see if I need to order it when it gets here.  The one for the TJ looks like a nice piece, but the one for the YJ just has those quick splice clips that I assume youre supposed to clip into your ignition wiring.

Well DUH!  I feel dumb now!

Anyway, mine did not use an adapter either, and it's a '94...

Haha no worries.  Only 91-92 and 98-99 needed adapters.  Hopefully mine will be like Jeffys and not need an adapter.

Sent PD an email asking them about it?  Unless they changed the coil I don't see why it's needed.

I sent them an email a while back.  I wanted to know if the 2.5 needs the adapter even though only the 4.0 is listed as needing it.  The responder said they were "pretty sure" the 2.5 needed it too.  I guess well wait and see if it does need one or not.  I can always just order one after the fact anyway.

Well, since I know the owner, I can ask him if you really want to know.

I like my FirePower kit, but be sure to use lots of dialectic grease on the wires, they seem to pull apart pretty easily.

If you could ask him that would be great.  If there is an adapter needed, Im curious as to what the differences are between your coil and the ones that must come with it now that need an adapter.

I talked to PD and he said there has been no change so you should be fine without the adapter.
