Title: Maintenance after regear
Post by: 93yjFirstJeep on August 24, 2009, 08:27:27 PM
So i put 4.88 in my yj maybe 1500 miles ago, and i just read that you are supposed to change the fluid after about 500 miles. Is this necessary?

YES! During the gear break in period lots of metal shavings come off. You will be surprised how grey your oil is.

Not only should you drain the diffs (rather than suck it out), you should brake clean as much as you can as well. This would be a good time to inspect your wear pattern on the gears.

If you weren't careful about break-in and got it too hot at first few trips the fluid could have broke down too, although that would be the least of your worries at that point. I agree w/ the other posters - drop the cover, inspect your pattern, and replace w/ new lube.
