What would be the best and readily available vehicle to get a 44 from, for a 89 YJ.
Any advice would be great. Thanks

87-89 XJ D44 same bolt pattern, correct width. Need to re-do the spring perch and shock mounts.

Since you are looking at a vehicle which only had one rear axle, any axle you find will require brake line, parking brake, ds yoke, leaf perches, r&p (other ratios/lockers availability) and shock mounts all to be looked at or weighed when you decide to buy.
For the most easiest bolt in would be to locate someone else's sale for their next upgrade.
In terms of cost, labor and time, like what FourbangerYJ suggested. However, costs also depend on demand and your location. Other viable rear axles are available with minimal work effort.

You're better off with a 8.8 IMHO, and you can find them with 4.10's so you may be able to avoid regearing right away.

Mid '90s Isuzu Rodeo or Honda Passport, you will get a d44 with disc brakes and the same 6-lug wheel pattern as the Wagoneer d44 front. Great combo.
Or get the Ford 8.8 or XJ d44 and limit yourself to the d30 front axle.

How are you limiting yourself with an XJ D44? Both Superior and Yukon made shafts with both 4.5" and 5.5" patterns on them already. I'm not sure on the 8.8" but I'd assume, 5 on 5.5 shafts are available as well.

A buddy of mine has some Moser shafts in his 8.8 with 5.5.5 pattern. Not sure if it's a dual pattern or not.
The XJ/TJ D44 shafts are avail in a dual pattern from all the aftermarket companies as far as I know. Mine are Alloy USA.

the way i see it is for the same or less money you can get an 8.8. look at axle strengths and weakness. 8.8 has disc, correct ratio,mine 3.73. best strength on budget is 8.8.

dana 30 w alloys good upto 35's. if you are going past 35 the rear 44 will be suspect. go alloys front 8.8 rear and know you are good up to 35's

Alloys aren't necessary in the D30 with 35's unless it's locked. lots of guys running stock shafts without issues, myself and others here included.

Didn't think of the 5x5.5" conversion for the rear d44 and 8.8, good points.

I have locrite in front and alloy drivers side. stock tj shaft on pass side. will go alloy if problems on that side

So you had problems with the driver's side? I've heard of that, the short side failing more due to allowing less torsional flex than a longer shaft.

i bought a used 30 for the locrite. it had drivers alloy. guy said he loved posi lock and driving in 3wheel drive.

I use 3wd often with my d44 front and spool.
