Title: Hard Top Question
Post by: OH-YJ on September 09, 2009, 09:08:40 PM
I bought a hard top a couple months ago and I'm not sure on the best (cheapest) way to put it on. It didn't come with any hardware and i was wondering if I could use the bolts from the soft top hardware on the tub and just buy some latches from Lowes to attach to the windshield frame?

Sounds good to me, better than paying $50 online. No air leaking in between the top and windshield?

I used to use the soft top hardware till I lost all mine. My hard top comes off and on so much that I don't worry too much about what air can get in (my rig is noisy as hell anyway because I have soft uppers with the hard top...) so I just use some 3/8 bolts and nuts. Pretty sure they're 3/8 anyway?

You should be able to reuse the 'nuts' but IIRC, the bolts are short in a few places.  They need to be a bit longer.  You can't reuse the screws in the windshield frame.  Hopefully, you have the rubber plugs that go between the front corners and the windshield as those are kind of important for the top to no move around.

Jeffy, I looked today and there are no rubber plugs. Is there soemthing i could substitute from the hardware store? Also, this is a CJ top, I don't know if this makes a difference or not?

I'm not sure if a CJ has the rubber plugs since I've never seen an original CJ with the top.  my guess is no.

It does not, just be sure the windshield seal is in decent shape. I had to replace it on both of my CJ tops. Also I reused the soft top bolts with no issues. Mine had to be screwed down at the windshield also with the CJ tops, have a kid sit on the front of the top before you do it to compress the seal a bit if you can.
