Title: yj with no go
Post by: YJ KiD on September 20, 2009, 09:00:32 PM
alright guys i have finally got my beloved yj back on its feet and running again and now am looking to improve it........ i am looking for some ideas and suggstions to help me make some more power out of the 2.5.   i have seen on the threads that guys are using forced induction to make them more power but the only thing about that is that i am ok with maintence and can fix it if it is broken but whe it comes to modification i would need very specific step by step instructions and kinda spooks me off of anything that major and was wondering if there where any mods to make any more power out of a NA 2.5

thanks for the input in advance

E-fan
Ignition upgrade
19# injectors (see for sale section)
Larger TB (see vendors section)
And re-gearing to lower gears. Need to have a shop do this unless your pretty good with setting up gears.
Lotsa good info in the FAQ.

depends on tires, although pple say here that the lower the better i would try to get it close to stock final ratio or a bit lower (i mean 1 level lower gears than what would give you stock like final ratio) - so if i'm not mistaking (has to be verified but this is just so you get the image) for example if you have 31s i think the 4.56 would be like stock then i wouldn't go lower than 4.88 (and with stock axles D30/D35 you can't anyway), but like i said some guys recommend even lower than that.

looked at the for sale thread do the jeep 2.5's take ford 19# injectors?  sorry if it is a dumb question but i have only owned 4.0's in the past but got a good deal on this one and how big of difference can u make with bolt ons or is this just a lost cause and i just need to learn how to deal with it?

I'd go 4.88 while your doing it.  Thats as low as you can get the D30/35 anyways.  What size tires do you run?

The 91-95's can take the Ford 19# injectors.

PD makes a ignition upgrade. It looks like for the 91-02 crowd on the 2.5L

What year Jeep do you have?

YES! The small motor needs all the help it can get. Gearing makes a big improvement.

33s and 4.88s will be like stock if you had 4.10 before

Definately!!!  If your going to 35's I'd go 5.38 (you'll need new axles).

new axles isn't going to happen.  for one i don't have enough time to wheel enough to justify and if i am going through with that big of an expense then it will go to a fuel injected small block but that prolly wont happen either add that to the when i hit the powerball list

you should get a 4.0L throttle body (not sure if you have it yet or suggested before in this thread - so if it was please disregard this, there are a few write-ups on this site regarding that) and match the diameter in the intake port where it bolts on. You can get one fairly cheap at a wreckers, mine came off a Cherokee. Also a cold air intake or high flow air filter combined with removing the velocity (or whatever it's called) restrictor tube in the air filter box cover

Your 2.5 TB will make a perfect core. I sent him mine when I got a 62MM one from him.
