Can an 8.8 lsd be welded? Going to start saving for 488 and want to lock rear on a budget. Do I have to pull an open carrier and have those spider gears welded. Will a spool work, mini spool?

I see locrite makes one for lsd diff and open. Heard knocks against locrite in rear whats you views? Detroit is what I crave but I see alot of $$$$$$

You can grab an open carrier from the junkyard and install a mini-spool for around $125, or go to a full-spool for $190.

The problem with welding the LS carrier is you have the s-spring in the way, not sure if it can be removed and not used when welded. My only experience with Lincoln Lockers is with open carriers.
I love lincoln lockers and spools in the rear of jeeps, running spools in both ends of my YJ now, ran 2 lincoln lockers when I had stock axles. No problems on road, it's driven almost daily in all kinds of weather.

someone should confirm this but i think the minispool would replace your spider gears and you still use your carrier and the spool i think it refers to the full spool which would replace the whole carrier (so it's a solid piece) where you'll have to install your ring and put new bearings on, do the pinion depth and backlash adjustments as well. Again, i'm not sure if this is it so someone should confirm or explain if otherwise.

You got it about right.

So just a tip.
I've helped and done quite a few gear setups and I find that if I keep
all the shims from the carrier as they were, I can trade the ring and
pinions all day long and they will need almost no adjustment. It seems
like all the slop is in the diff housing so as long as you keep those shim
sets organized you just change the gear pair and your good enough most of the time.
If you can find a copy of the Dana Setup manual or get the one from
Yukon Gear it takes a lot of the mystery out of all of it.
