Title: Easy YJ Automatic Question
Post by: Bubbahotep on October 04, 2009, 08:52:14 PM
I just got a 95 JY with an automatic transmission.  This is the first Jeep with an auto trans that I have had.

Where it has "ParkRND21" on the column, should that be lit with a bulb?
Mine is hard to see at night and it seems like it should be lit, but then again, its a Jeep.

Is yours lit?

Thanks

YJ's use a Saginaw/GM Column. You should find a small bulb right below the display you used to change them by pulling a screw at each end of the display and lifting straight up I havn't done one on a YJ.... There was a short pigtail hooked to a cheasy little socket that clipped to the pointer.
If you have no light, there is a good chance the cheasy little pointer thingy would still work and you could get it off almost any GM product.

Better yet find a Cadillac or Buick tilt column and swap your key cylinder in to it and have tilt steering... :)

Otherwise a LED, resistor and a couple pieces of wire tapped off the ignition would work. It would just always be on.

YJ's already have tilt-columns.

But yeah, I'd just replace the bulb. Chances are it's burned out. Or go with the LED idea.

i think you mean adjustable - tilt column means it would tilt up when you take the key out of the ignition - i think that's what dwtaylor meant (please confirm) - would be a cool thing to have.

Actually not all YJs have tilt columns.  It was optional.  IIRC it was part of the convenance package which gave you a glove box lock, passenger side floor light, center console and a few other things.

Yup.  I just removed the fixed column from mine and installed a tilt column.  Most of the YJ's I've seen do not have tilt columns.

Mine did, it was as loaded as a 73 Chevy.

Pure luxury. 8)

so do you guys mean tilt as in adjustable (height) or tilt as in will tilt up and to the right when you take the key out? (if that's the case i will be on a quest to find one at the wreckers).

adjustable height is what's commonly known as a tilt column.

had a mustang long time ago and tilt was what i just described + it was height adjustable, so i always thought tilt meant flip-up when you are about to get out of the car - I was about to raid the junkyards for one when i saw the post

Adjustable falls under several categories;

Tilt Wheel
Developed by General Motors' Saginaw Steering Gear Division, the seven position Tilt Wheel was made available in several General Motors products in 1963. Originally a luxury option on cars, the tilt function helps to adjust the steering wheel by moving the wheel through an arc in an up and down motion. Tilt Steering Wheels rely upon a ratchet joint located in the steering column just below the steering wheel. By disengaging the ratchet lock, the wheel can be adjusted upward or downward while the steering column remains stationary below the joint. Some designs place the pivot slightly forward along the column, allowing for a fair amount of vertical movement of the steering wheel with little actual tilt, while other designs place the pivot almost inside the steering wheel, allowing adjustment of the angle of the steering wheel with almost no change it its height.

Telescope Wheel
Developed by General Motors Saginaw Steering Gear Division, the telescoping wheel can be adjusted to an infinite number of positions in a 3-inch range. The Tilt and Telescope steering wheel was introduced as an exclusive option on Cadillac automobiles in 1965.

Adjustable Steering Column
In contrast, an adjustable steering column allows steering wheel height to be adjusted with only a small, useful change in tilt. Most of these systems work with compression locks or electric motors instead of ratchet mechanisms; the latter may be capable of moving to a memorized position when a given driver uses the car, or of moving up and forward for entry or exit.
