Hey guys,
So before my transfer case in the YJ blew up the speedo was working perfectly, but once I got the new one in the speedo wasnt working. From what I understand from some people is that the speedo cable isnt connected to the transfer case correctly. Does that sound correct?

Follow the directions on this link to ensure that the speed sensor is correctly clocked in the tailshaft housing of the transfer case. http://www.4x4xplor.com/speedo.html

You mean this one isn't any good? http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php/topic,731.0.html

You have a '90 so, your speedoemter is just a mechanical sender to the gauge and isn't electronic. You will want to make sure the sender, cable and gauge are OK.

The cable should be fine, I didnt replace that. I just heard that I may not have attached the cabe right. Anywho, I'll check it out. Thanks.

I've also been relying mostly on my GPS for my speed recently. haha. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

welcome to the site.

Make sure you have the housing turned to the right tooth count; I did not do this once, and the speedo gear fell into the TC, and got no speedo reading as a result.

Yeah, you have to look at the teeth range on the VSS and then position the teeth numbering on the sensor directly over a little metal nub that should be down there at 6 o'clock on the transfer case VSS opening. I had to feel around for the nub after cleaning off the area. But it's there. And I got the speedo working right away.
Sorry your's is a different engine year

i believe you were right, all years have that for gear alignment, maybe the position of that little bump/mark is different but it's there - i discovered that when i put the '81 CJ Dana 300 in and i could use the speedo sensor and gear off my '95 YJ NP231 and once i aligned the speedo gear housing with the mark it worked like a charm.
