FYI: Seems that Amazon.com has dropped the price for the Fram Air hogs to $8.98. Pretty good deal since paper filters cost about the same.
-
a buddy of mine sucked a fram airfilter(it was the regular one) into his turbo, truck was a 04 duramax.... the filter media came all to pieces, the fram tough gaurd oil filter that fits my jeep also had issues, the media collapsed and blew the filter right off the jeep... and wasted 4 fresh quarts of oil!!! glad I noticed it right as it happened and shut it off and fixed it.

These are not paper filters and should be of higher quality.

Question... If i wanna buy one off of amazon how do i know which one is for my application? 1990 yj 2.5

There's a vehicle selector someplace. Otherwise you should be able to go to Fram and they should have a catalog.
I just looked it up at Fram, which happens to be the same filter for later YJ's.
YJ - Part Number PPA3373

Product I.D. 6.22" (Width)

Cool, any idea where i can pick up the cleaner for this? And/or if I can use K&N cleaner for it?
and oil of course.

I suspect it's similar to the K&N although they do have their own brand stuff.
General Service Notes:
Inspect filter every 6 to 12 months. If the filter has a visible layer of dust, it should be serviced. If the vehicle is operated in severe or high dust conditions, more frequent inspection and service will be required. Never let the filter go beyond 18 months without cleaning.
Prolonged exposure to heat or sunlight may cause the filter to dry out. If the filter appears too dry, but does not require cleaning, a light application of oil is recommended.
Do NOT saturate the filter with oil – it could be harmful to the vehicle’s air induction system.
Directions for Use:
A. Cleaning -
When cleaning your FRAM® AirHog™ filter, NEVER use gasoline, cleaning solvents, steam, caustic solutions or strong detergents. Do NOT use brush or tools to facilitate cleaning. NEVER spray filter with compressed air or high-pressure water. Always use slow flowing, cool water to rinse filter. Failure to follow these safeguards may result in damage to the filter media.
1) Carefully remove the filter from the filter housing. Inspect and clean filter housing prior to re-installing the filter.
2) Tap the filter against a flat surface to remove any loose or caked-on dirt. Take care not to contaminate the clean side of the filter element.
3) Place filter on a flat work surface and spray both sides of the filter liberally with FRAM™ AirHog™ Air Filter Cleaner. Allow the solution to soak into the filter media for at least 10 minutes.
4) Rinse the filter using cool. low-pressure tap water. Rinse from the clean side.
B. Drying -
Allow filter to completely dry naturally. NEVER use compressed air, heat or open flames. Heat may cause the filter media to shrink. Failure to follow these safeguards may result in damage to the filter media. It is very important that the filter media is dry prior to re-oiling.
C. Oiling -
When oiling use only FRAM® AirHog™ Air Filter Oil. NEVER use filter without oil. The oil is needed to remove contaminants. Do NOT over oil filter. Failure to follow these safeguards may result in damage to the vehicle.
1) Before applying FRAM® AirHog™ Air Filter Oil, inspect the filter to ensure that it is clean and dry. If necessary, a second cleaning may be required.
2) Sparingly apply filter oil to each pleat. Spray each pleat only once. You will be able to see where the oil has been applied because the filter media color will change to FRAM™ orange. Only a light covering of oil should be applied, do NOT saturate the media.
3) Allow the oil to soak into the filter for 20 minutes. If after 20 minutes any white spots remain, lightly re-apply oil in white areas only.
4) Re-install the filter into the clean filter housing/airbox. Ensure that the sealing surfaces are properly seated
5) Affix the "Do Not Discard" sticker in a highly visible location on the outside of the filter housing to prevent a service technician from discarding your FRAM™ AirHog™ air filter.
-
i read that too but i suspect they say only use there brand because they want to make the money off you. Thats my 2 pennies on that. Thats why i ask. haha
-
I used to use simple green to clean the filter, mixed it 1 part soap
to 5 parts water and soaked the filter in it. Then just use a garden hose
with one of these "gentle" spray nozzles for flowers to rinse it out.
The simple green only needed like 2 minutes to break everything loose.

But what did you use to oil it?

air hogs need oil? I never knew they were like k&n filters....
-
Yeah I ordered one from amazon. Gonna try it out, see whats up with it. However, when I go wheeling, the paper filter is going back in.

good idea, biggest reason I dont like to use these type of filters.

They are reusable filters like the K&N. Several of us bought them when they were -$1. ie. you made $1 after sending in a coupon.

Looks like Purolator oil filters are also on some sort of sale.
PH8A - http://www.amazon.com/Purolator-L30001-Classic-Filter-Pack/dp/B000ICNU9S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1257537143
They don't seem to have the larger one in stock though.

What are the specs for that oil filter?
-
What are the specs for that oil filter?
It's equivalent to a Fram PH8A
-
Gotcha.
-
Gotcha.
The stock is a PH16, IIRC and there is also a larger filter. PH997a or something like that. It's all in the FAQ.
-
Yeah I'll check it out. Only problem is I just changed the oil fairly recently hahaha.
-

Stock up! I usually have one or two extras around just in case I feel the need. It's pretty easy to change the oil since I have a Fram Suredrain which adds a wang to the oil pan so I can drain it directly into bottles.
-
dang never heard of that. haha. Anyway, never really felt the need to stock up on oil filters as I can get them for fairly inexpensive at any nearby autoparts store haha. I usually pick one up when I grab oil. I dont really have anywhere to store much of anything as of right now anyway.

those are great, I have a similar one made by fumoto.

Wish I had something like that. I have to drop my engine skid to change the oil. It does not take that long, but it's a PITA.
-
I'm not sure why Fram doesn't have them on their site anymore but you can still find them at a lot of online vendors. It's around $8. I don't remember which model number it is but I think it's SD1 or SD2. I'm thinking it's SD1 since it's standard and not metric like all of the others. FRAM/JEG's application chart is a bit confusing. http://www.jegs.com/pdfs/SureDrain.pdf
SD1- 1/2-20 Oil Drain - http://www.amazon.com/Fram-SD1-SureDrain-Access-Change/dp/B000AMW0K6
SD2 - M14x1.5 Oil Drain - http://www.amazon.com/Fram-SD2-SureDrain-Access-Change/dp/B000AMW0JW
SD3 - M12x1.25 Oil Drain
SD4 - M12x1.75 Oil Drain
SD5 - M18x1.5 Oil Drain
-
Looks like a SD1 would work for me. How long does it take for the oil to drain out? I have heard it's pretty slow.
-
Good stuff and thanks. Amazon has a good outlet as well and sometimes things get dirt cheap. I wonder what the difference is in the orange filter versus the white filter?
-
I went looking and amazon also has a great deal on besttop bikini tops. $22.30. The rest are $53!
:http://www.amazon.com/Bestop-52519-37-Strapless-Bikini-Spice/dp/B0002SA410/ref=au_pf_ss_2?ie=UTF8&n=15684181&s=automotive&carId=001 (http://:http://www.amazon.com/Bestop-52519-37-Strapless-Bikini-Spice/dp/B0002SA410/ref=au_pf_ss_2?ie=UTF8&n=15684181&s=automotive&carId=001)
It says they only have 2 in stock. I bouight shocks once when they had 2 in stock. They got more, but tripled the price.Just saying that it might be good to pull the trigger.
Also, amazon has THE best price on the Fram Sure Drain. SD1 fits the 2.5 pan. $7.69

10% off Veteran's Day Sale at 4wd.com
Promo code VET09
thought i'll share, just got an email.
EDIT: apparently you have to call to get the discount 1-800-914-0065 valid Wed Nov 11 and Thu Nov 12, 2009.
tires seem to be on sale already when you buy 4 you get $100 off, not sure if this code apply to that already discounted deal, if it does it's the best price on tires i've seen - 4 x BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 Tire, 35x12.50R15 show in cart at $707, if this veteran's day promo apply then would be $637 = $159/tire - quite a deal for those (again not sure if you can redeem that code but if you can it's worth the call)
-

I couldnt agree more. I did go to the purolater site before putting in my newbie question and checked to see if the 30001 would work. I diligently spent about 20 minutes doing a "next" button marathon and when I got to jeep it did not show it as compatible. But i am glad i am wrong because i am going to get a pair of the filters to go with my air hog and sure drain.
-
I ordered an air hog. I should be recieving it tomorrow.

It won't shot it as matching because it's not the stock size. These are over-sized so they are not recommended by the mfg. Many of us have been running the PH8A style filter for years. It's slightly larger then the stock PH16. I would recommend going with a PH997A (I think that's the one in the faq). That is more then twice the size of the PH16. Amazon does not have a sale on them though. They aren't as common as the PH8A. Seems most everything uses a PH8A.
-
When you install the larger filter check the clearance between it and the motor mount. On my 94 the original mounts were like 1/8 inch from the filter, I noticed a dent in the filter from impact from wheeling. Once I replaced the mount (Another failure) it was different and had plenty of room.

should be oiled from the manufacturer. if not you will be able to tell.
-
Thanks. I read earlier that it should be orange too.
-
the oil form the manufacturer is just to preserve it,
they should have a booster oil done before install.
At least thats how K&N and Uni-filter are installed.

Hmm, the Fram is Drop-In and go. I don't think K&N's require additional maintenance out of the box or else a large majority of people aren't installing them properly.

thought so too, my Apollo's instructions only mention to service it after whatever miles but does not say to add any oil for the first install.
-
You hit it right on the head,
MOST PEOPLE DON'T INSTALL THEM PROPERLY!
Its like 2 pages into the instructions that you need
to oil the K&N before installing it. I play at a race shop
and do a lot of weekend work wrenching on race cars,
I've literally installed a hundred of these in the last 10 years.
For a while the K&N's did come pre-oiled in a sealed bag in the
box and they dripped oil when you unpacked them. But the only
ones I saw like that were the round SBC style for stock air cleaners and
a few of the ones like fit the YJ air box.. But recently have all come almost dry.
I like the foam filters better cause they are easier to clean, but the Unitfilter style
are about double the price of a K&N and in road racing the dirt is not a big deal,
many guys run without filters at all especially on the really high winding Weber
side draft equipped engines. They just have a 1/4 in grid trash screen.

i will call them tomorrow - the Apollo is an enclosed filter, comes assembled, I will have some words for them if you are right and i need to take it apart and oil it. I'll post back once i get hold of someone at KnN
-
I know the Airhog is ready to go as they are bagged inside the box to keep them fresh.
-
I'll be interested to see what you find out!
I've always thought it kind of sucked that you had to
buy the oil before you could use the filters.
I installed a big K&N on a sprint car a couple months ago it
came white, no oil at all. and it was huge, took almost a full bottle of oil to get it covered.
I also wonder if there are many counterfit K&N filters in the market, there are
definitely several fabric based filters that look identical but sold under import brand names.
Would not be the first company to have that happen....

There are knockoffs. Look at the import scene and you'll find them. Most are cheap no-name brands.
-
Yea, but ya gotta wonder how many end up in a K&N box printed offshore.....
Hmm I need to tool through a couple of the cut-rate auto parts stores this week and take a look.

Yep ordered right from them direct, a 400 dollar 15" tall, 15 Wide 28" Long box filter.
It was not pure white, if you held it up in the light it had a very faint tinge of
red-purple like they had misted the oil on to it. But once I oiled it its K&N red now...
Took almost eh whole 16ox bottle of oil to get the beast oiled up. I'll try and snap
an Iphone pic its pretty impressive....

it's a good deal for the price, the only problem is that it is for a 3.5'' intake pipe so you would need a reducer to 2.5''. still, $22 for a KnN cone filter is not bad.

IIRC, you dont need oil at all... I think that was one of the main differences with the K&N.

Jumper cables are also good for joining 2 batteries to weld while in the field... Use 2 sets of jumpers, a general purpuse rod, a vise grip (to hold the rod; jumper cables do not do a good job of holding the rod steaty, so it is easier to hold the rod with the vise-grip and conect the jumper to it), connect the netaive lead to the rod (vise-grip), postive to the part, connect one of the batieries positive cable to the other' negative, and weld away! You can control the amps by the number of batteries you use (1, 2, 3 or more, depending on the thickness you are welding).

Beware JeepAddOns
I just got off the phone with JeepAddOns. I had a horrible experience. It may have earned everyone else a bigger "discount", though, so my loss may be your gain. Let me explain:
I ordered an Engo 9k way back at the beginning of November. Only $275 with an extra $25 for an 8 Ton snatch block? Let's make it an even $300 and be on our way. Oh, there'll be a problem. The winch won't get shipped and to my door until about the 21st of November. Um, okay. It's a good deal, so I'll wait.
And wait. And wait. November 21st came and went. By December 1st, nothing. I tried calling and got nothing for about ten minutes. I'm in a hurry, so I get off the phone. Try again from another phone a couple days later. Nothing. Notice my bank has a cancel on the pre-authorized charge that I allowed. What the hell? Alright, guess I'll find some other winch.
Fast forward to yesterday, when I get a hit on a charge against my old bank card that had been canceled in January. I get online to figure out what happened. Turns out to be JeepAddOns. I've also got an invoice in my email. There's everything. I call my parents, where I use their physical address. Dad found the boxed winch sitting in a covered area to the side of the garage. Shippers put stuff their since my parents live out in the country. They weren't expecting a big box since I told them the order got canceled, so they didn't know to look. I don't even know how long it had been sitting there. It isn't even what I ordered.
So, here I am today, calling to return the winch. I tried yesterday, but I was too busy to wait longer than ten minutes. I call today with more time. Something happens and I get disconnected. Try again. Somebody answers and transfers me. Bob answers the phone. Bob is a nice guy and tries to sort everything out, obviously while on speaker phone. But crap went south real fast when the guy who answered for the transfer jumps into the background and starts doing Bob's work for him. He starts in about how it's my fault because I didn't call to cancel the order. He also says the difference in winch was a free upgrade that I shouldn't worry about. Didn't mention the missing snatch block, of course. he just kept talking over me and mentioning how he's looking at the phone records and can assure me that I didn't call about anything since I talked to Chris back in November. He assures me that I've never been on a hold. He's going on and on and on. I got upset at all the negative in your face b.s. and tell him I'm not doing anymore business with him. I tell him Bob was doing great until he pops in. I also mentioned that I'm going to post this on the different Jeep forums that I'm on. At that point he just speaks over me, as he already doing, and says, "Don't give him a return. Clear it out. He doesn't deserve it. Don't give him a refund. You go ahead and mention it on your forums. I'll just be on there tomorrow to give them a bigger discount. They can thank you for their discount."
Are you freaking kidding me? This is how you treat customers, JeepAddOns?
So, go ahead and enjoy whatever extra discount may or may not come your way. I've already got a very good Warn winch from one of the other Reservist guys I'm deploying to Afghanistan with this year. I'll easily sell this Engo winch for a discount to one of the firefighters I work with in my daily job. I'm on about half a dozen sites like this, and I'll spread my message to all. I'm also spreading the word to all my firefighter contacts (lots of 4X4 owners).
And, while writing this, my Chief Petty Officer, whom I called for advice, gave me some more options: I'm going to make a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, as well as making a notice on our Reserve website. Lots of Navy SeaBees have 4X4s, too. Hell, I'll even spread the word with the Commander of the Reserve Center. I'll tell anybody and everybody I know to stay clear of JeepAddOns. Chris was a nice sales guy, as was Bob in customer service. But it just isn't worth the overall problems to deal with this. Never again.
-
yep, BBB - they will put them out of business if they get too many complaints.
