Finally got around to playing a new game, Borderlands. I have it running on the PC. It's basically a RPG with a FPS aspect to it. Kind of like Far Cry 2 I guess. I like the music as well. The graphics may not be as visual stunning like Crysis or similar games but it's still pretty good and gives me high frame rates.
I also have Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising. I really like what they have done to make the game feel polished. ARMA was never really close to being polished and ARMA II is still much of the same. The only catch is if the community will start modding for it...
Nothing really for the PS3 other then MGS4 which I played 5 times in a row. Great game by the way.
Still haven't got around to finishing Mirror's Edge and I'm at the last chapter...
-
Im gonna have to go with WOW all the way
-
i got around to playing the l4d2 demo last week. its like 1 but the zombies are faster and there is a lot of vertical area so the zombies can jump down and attack you from behind when your not expecting it.. and there is a lot more weapon choice. their hype of the meelee is kinda overrated since it takes the place of the pistol spot which id rather had the dgal or dual of any other pistols over a guitar.. although the chainsaw should be fun
(haven't found it in the demo)...
other than that i kinda got into l4d versos mode finally.. but haven't realy been playing games much recently.
-
I'm still hooked on SOCOM like I have been for years. Confrontation currently.
-
Have been playing Urban Terror for a while...it's free software available for any op system.
www.urbanterror.net
give it a try...oh yeah, online play is also free...
-
I've been playing the Rainbow 6 Las Vegas 2 for the PS3, I think its pretty cool. I just got my PS3 a couple months ago so I havent really bought to many games yet

No, no... You have it all wrong. You need to buy the PS3, and then go and buy LOTS of games!!!

(the Sony employee guy!)

I want to buy more games, its just they're expensive and I dont play to much during the summer, as winter comes and Im restricted more to inside things I will probably buy a few more. So far I have been really happy with my PS3 :thumb:
-
I want to buy more games, its just they're expensive ...
That's why I buy most of my games for the PC if they are available. I have a pretty decent gaming computer so most everything plays on 'high'. Games are usually $10 cheaper at release and drop soon after. You can usually save $20 just by waiting a month or so as they start to go on sale. A year later and that $49 came is usually in the bargin bin at $19. Some PC games don't drop that fast but most do. Console games take an extra year or two to start dropping in price.
-
I use my laptop for work so I try not to load it up with to many games otherwise I tend not to get any work done.

I used to play L4D but it got boring after a while. I'll probably pick up L4D2 though.

jeffy, whats your account?
I think it's JY556.
-
Picked up COD: Modern Warfare 2 today....squeezed in a mission over lunch...just love the modern day realistic crap. :guns:

I think it's JY556.
Nice, i set up mine a while ago and forgot the name, I'll look it up and let you guys know a little bit later.

I think the Call of Duty MMO Activision has in the works is going to end any semblance of off-line social lives for a lot of people

I played Borderlands for 360 and thought it was alright. The amount of weapons is crazy. I played it alone though, which made it somewhat boring. Its definately a game to play with others. I still have to play the new COD Modern Warfare 2. Those games never dissapoint. Its too bad I let my XBOX live expire and I really don't have the money to renew it. :'(

I finished playing through Borderlands in SP. It was fun but I can't see playing is through a second time unless it's Co-Op. Otherwise, it's more of the same but harder.
I've started playing COD MW2 though. It's very linear but still fun. I can see a few of the maps are set up for multi-player with many hiding spots. Even in SP it's fun but you don't really get to see the expanse of the map. Graphics are nice and seem to optimize well as I'm getting no less then 60FPS and peaking around 100FPS with my GTX 280 SSC.
-
anyone using softth? - i play rFactor with it and it's a blast (about 70fps min). Crysis takes a big hit on fps with it, still fun just cause you get the peripheral vision, but i need to lower the quality to get decent rates - I have the resolution set at 4480x1050 on a GTX280 o/ced to 740MHz and a GT 7300 for the 3rd monitor.

oops, is 729Mhz actually, i forgot i had it at 740 and was unstable so i lowered it and at this one works fine.

What a crock! I finished COD MW2 on hard in 3 days. Interesting story line as almost every character you play dies. Not to mentioned some of the scenarios. It's very fast pace but still fun.
-
Just picked up a PS3...playing Gran Turismo, BAJA and Dirt 2
-
Playing a lot of Pool, got a table last week - I hate video games.

pool is fun.. to bad mine has hunting gear piled all over it... on a different note i picked up Farcry2 and stalker on Friday ($5 each).. i started Farcry 2 last night but im not expecting to commit any real time to it tell after Christmas.
-
I don't know why I just started this, but finally started playing multiplayer deathmatch on GTA IV....a lot of fun...sometimes tracking people through the entire map...running them over with stolen cars....good clean fun. :thumb:

I have yet to play this. I heard the story line was interesting, but its all about the online play. I never even played all the way thru on the 1st COD MW.
-
The SP story isn't that good. You can feel that it was made for MP and the story was strung between the maps.
-
Got a PS3 for Xmas. Just finished Uncharted and just started Uncharted 2, The Mrs. and kids are playing Lego's Indiania Jones 2.
-
Got a PS3...Playing Dirt 2 and Gran Turismo 5 prologue

So, I know I should be this pr-Sony guy, but I tried giving uncharted 2 a shot, and found it IMPOSSIBLE to control!

Typical with console FPS's.

Really?? I am on level 19. It's a pretty good game. It's not a super shoot out game but it has it's moments.
-
For the wii, I've been messing around with call of duty and for the PC, I've been playing unreal tournament..old school
-
Mass Effect 2 :guns:
-
ARMA 2 finally

battlefield badcompany 2 beta. :weee:

interesting. I played it and i was thoroughly impressed. really liked it and found the story line (as they advertise) to be quite movie-like. The controls weren't really an issue, but i must say as i got towards the end i found it kind of a drag to go through maps in the longest possible way...but i guess that was the point.
-
I just picked up MAG for PS3 (COD on roid's 200+ people can be in same game), almost played through Borderlands got a bit bored, and WOW just got my 3rd character to 80. Alterac mountains alliance side. Main = Yuckfoo
-
Just started playing Left 4 Dead 2. It's more like 1.5 actually. I don't like how if you play SP, you can basically skip to anywhere you want without having cleared that level before. There's no incentive to play from the beginning to end really.
I like the new weapons and the melee attacks. What I don't like is the dumb AI when I'm playing at higher then Normal. I think it's almost too difficult since some swarms are almost endless. The task's are interesting. The first one I had to go get some guy some soda.
I wish the ingame prices were real for some of the rifles. A Bushmaster ACR for $1999.99 is a steal compared to what they're going to be asking. Not to mention the HK94 is a steal as well. Although the AK at $1999.99 is a ripoff.
Chrome 870? I'll pass... Desert Eagle, no thanks... The suppressed uzi is a nice addition. I like how the flashlight is just taped on. On the new computer I'm getting FPS's around 150
I'm still playing Arma 2 though. It's really nice when playing with friends on custom missions with custom gear.
-
My son is hooked on Plants VS. Zombies.
-
if found that l4d1.5 gets annoying. the swarms keep on coming which isn't al bad. but there is always that one zombie that is clawing at your back slowing you down that you don't see until you have turned around 1.5 times... ive found it to be way easier in single player than online thow as Ive yet to get a real good set of teammates..

Yeah, I've cleared what's in front of me to find that one is chewing on my leg and my health is dropping fast. It's a limitation of having a monitor and not being able to see a true 180*. I'll keep playing and maybe my nephew will get it for PC. Although I think he's going to like ArmA since he's into FPS's and more so into wanting to learn how to make missions. I wish it was sold as an addon to L4D so you can play the combined series instead of having to start up a new game if you want to switch.
-
I was looking around for a well-reviewed game that might give my desktop a decent workout. I picked up Battlefield Bad Company 2 since the reviews were pretty good.
I've been playing it multiplayer, so I don't know who I am playing with. But the gameplay is basically COD meets Beirut or former Soviet republics or conflict areas near the equator in the 21st century.
Overall pretty good, graphic detail and audio is superb, with the resolution at 1900x1200 you start thinking you are looking at CNN footage or something. A little disappointed with the game play in terms of what it takes to kill an enemy. You can dump all these rifle rounds in to an opponent at point blank range -- every player has some kind of body armor -- and it doesn't even slow the guy down. Finally dies if he takes enough hits -- seems like enough to take out an army.
But a decent game once you get used to the limits.
-
i preordered bc2 so i got to play the bata. i love the destructible environment stuff. fun gameplay (online) as long as you get on a balanced team that will work together. i gave it up for lent so haven't played the full version more than installing and opening to make sure the full version worked on my computer (i have been having vary bad luck with ea customer service (they garinty a response in 24 hours and it took them a week to reply let alone being useless )and wish i had gotten it through steam)
-
What you are talking about chard with EA sounds like my deal with DVD/Blu Ray playback software.
I was laughing, impressed with the realism driving the hummers and quads in BC2. You can drive the hummers up over rocks at pretty steep side angles.
Had this one game where I was driving a quad and a dude on the other team was on one on the same road going the opposite direction. He sees me coming and it looks like its going to be head-on. He slows down before we contact and jumps off so he can start shooting and I just keep speeding past and get this text saying something like -- enemy kill +50. I guess the game had him jump off right in front of me  That must have pissed him off
-
And like you were saying about teams, the side that is coordinated has a huge edge over the opponent.
-
I have found the holy grail of PS3 shooter games and it is BC2!
-
Anyone try God of War III?
-
Yeah it seems pretty fun, haven't gotten to far into it yet.
-
any one play battlefield heros.. it s the free online battlefield game.. kinda reminds me of TF2 with its graphics but not a fun.. but having vehicles and considering that it is free makes up for its short comings. ive been getting more into heros as i wait for Easter to come so i can play bc2..
-
Let me know your username when you start playing BC2 Chard. I've been going by "resort security." We should put a group together.
-
ill be starting bc2 on Sunday most likely.. i think my user name is chardrc.. or chard... 1 of the 2...
-
Not to jack the thread, but with BC2, I think EA is still working out the game's kinks.
When multi-player you tend to have too many snipers (the sniper rifles, the pump shot-gun, and the 40mm grenade are one-shot, one-kill or close to it).
People seem to select recon/sniper since it can start to piss you off emptying a clip from an assault rifle at close range in to an enemy without killing him. The guns available as you progress are significantly higher powered -- I've been offed in short order by more than a few higher ranking enemies with M60s
This kind of rolls in to my argument implied by my last few posts that the rifles you have access to in the lower ranks are underpowered as they stand.
And then you get in to the punkbuster issue and heck-knows how many cheats there are for the game. I've long since started playing solely on servers with Punkbuster in effect.
-
Is the pump the first one? I have pointblank shot a guy up to 3 times to make them die. I do agree with the snipers though on team Deathmatch. To counter that though the 40m doesn't work if they are to close - you commite suicide or it doesn't explode and the shotgun has no range whatso ever so if you are in range (50yards) they should pretty much die on impact. With the sniper I have had to shoot them many of times to get them to die. If you hit them in the head though it is a 1 shot but same goes with all the others I have noticed. Just harder without a scope. I have been working on my assault and am about to get my red dot (FINALLY!) I am normally a medic but it is maxed.
Now are you playing on PC since you are using punkbuster? I haven't heard of anyway to install that on a ps3
-
in the beta i played a good deal and got red dot which was nice and the second assault rifle for medic... i also got the second gun for the engineer.. the first sniper rifle kinda sucked took multiple shoots to kill people and can't get good seeing range with the fog effect. but i have yet to see how they changed that in the real game other than i lost everything i got in beta...
-
I use the first one with the 12x scope but unless I hit them in the head it takes multiple shots and with the reload speed they are gone by the time I re-zoom. Hoping to get the 50cal I think that one is offered. I like medic the best using 4x zoom with 60cal.
I think I would be way better with a keyboard and mouse compared to a controller.

The other deal with BC2 is you can't lie prone -- its either standing or one knee. Maybe they'll change that.
The medic gets decent guns pretty early on probably because those guys run around with red berets on when everybody else has camo.
And of course, if you lay in to buildings and trees enough with the tanks or rpg type weapons, they'll collapse with the snipers inside or fall
You guys tried any chopper piloting as yet
-
i tired some chopper in the beta.. was actually starting to get the hang of it... i love tanking a tank and pushing down all the trees to destroy the cover.. even get some kills running over hiding people.. lol
-
I have only been playing team deathmatch and there are only tanks in there
-
Tried the little UAV helicopter in there? The problem with the physics on that thing is its about half the size you are and seems to have unlimited ammo, plus missiles
Personally, I think the better-weapons-based-on-accumulated-score bit kind of caters to EA above all else. The more you play, the easier you get kills. Or, in other words, the more points you rack up points over time, the more effective are the weapons you get.
EA creates a points system that forces everybody to play the heck out of the game if they expect to have a fighting chance in random multi-player.
-
i never got used to that remote control guy.. killed a few of them but should never kill anyone with them.
-
ok started playing.. kinda sucks with everyone having better weapons but i have unlock a few now.. also sucks when your entire team goes sniper on you :brick:... anyways im jumping back in...

Ahh, this thread is right up my alley. I've played almost every major videogame ever released. I started in 1989 at the age of four with the Atari and Colecovision, then I moved up to the NES, and then the Sega Genesis and SNES, and so on. To date, I have owned every major console and handheld that has EVER been released in North America (except for the PS3, that's the only one I haven't had yet) and since 1997 I have always had a custom-built gaming rig. Suffice it to say, gaming has been a very big part of my life.
Right now I'm not playing much. Spring is here and I'd rather be outside during the day. Over the next few weeks I'm gonna get the garage cleaned up and the pool table leveled so I can start the parties again.
However, on PC, in the evenings I've been playing small three and four-player Unreal Tournament (the original from 1999) deathmatches on-line with friends. I run my own UT DM server at home, if you're interested in that and you play UT you can check it out at http://fraghouse.sinedeviance.co.cc/ and join us sometime. Besides UT, I've been playing some Open Arena bot match off-line, to keep up my Quake skill. Open Area is an open-source clone of Quake 3 Arena / Team Arena built on the ioQuake3 engine (this is the Q3A engine that id Software open-sourced years back, it's the same engine Urban Terror and many other open-source games are built on.) And last but not least, OpenTTD on the side when bored. OpenTTD is a wonderful open-source re-write of the Transport Tycoon Deluxe engine, and it adds a shit-ton of new features and optimizations. Like Open Arena and Urban Terror, it is also free and available for any operating system. Nowadays there are also open-source graphic and sound packs so you don't even need the original TTD data files to play it. And whenever those get boring, I have ePSXe (Playstation emulator) and ZSNES (SNES emulator) with a crapload of games in .ISO and ROM to fall back on.
On the Wii front ... seriously, who the hell still plays Wii anyways? The only reasons to own the system in the first place are the Wii-exclusive Resident Evil games (just like with the Gamecube before it  )
On the X360, I've been dicking around with GTA IV. I don't have a Live Gold account so I play off-line. I've long-since finished the story mode but I found that sometimes it's fun to just drive around and run people over and play with the vehicle damage model. GTA IV has the most advanced and realistic aesthetic damage model I've ever seen. I can literally spend hours just ramming different cars into a brick wall at different angles just to see how they deform, and in fact, I have
Mass Effect II, Bioshock II, Assassin's Creed II and Final Fantasy XIII are all out now and I plan to play them at some point. Chances are I'll wait until Winter before I start with any of those. I never did get around to Borderlands, either.
-
Mass Effect II (360 only and I threw mine on the floor... hard)
Bioshock II (great game hands down!)
Assassin's Creed II (way better than the first one and not a bad game)
Final Fantasy XIII (this game not worth the money. I wasted my money on this... the game is way to linear as compared to FF7 - at least what i have seen so far and read about).
Borderlands is a lot of fun! You should rent it and give it a try.

I never did play the original Unreal Tournament. I played "Unreal Tournament 2004" quite a bit in 2004. I was looking forward to the follow up, but Unreal 2004 was it for '05 and '06 until '07s, Unreal 3. Still had my previous system then which I don't think was up to the task for Unreal 3.
Before your time, but you didn't mention consoles like Atari 2600, 5200, and Mattel's Intellivision. The 5200 had lousy joysticks but made a passing attempt at fielding Atari's late 70s/80s arcade games for home use. Intellivision's controls didn't even have joysticks but it did have good sports games for the day. 2600 was good for Breakout, Space Invaders, Pitfall and a few others.
Then what about the Vectrex? There you were talking Asteroids that looked like arcade Asteroids, Battlezone that looks like arcade Battlezone. That was kind of a high-end piece of gear for the day.
-
Intellivision's controls didn't even have joysticks but it did have good sports games for the day. 2600 was good for Breakout, Space Invaders, Pitfall and a few others.
there is an intellivision at my grandparents place that use, was good entertainment for when i was there as a kid but the circular control thing would sometimes work and sometime not on one of the controllers which made it interesting..lol...
-
I had one of the intellivisions in '80-81. You needed to get in to the controller and clean out the contact between the disc and the interior surface. I'm pretty sure there were little phillips head screws on the back of the controllers.
-
i haven't even seen the thing in probably 10 years.. it has its own tv and is hidden away... but good to know if i ever fire it up again...
-
I was just throwing that control contact cleanup advice out there. But personally I haven't played with an Intellivision in probably 25 years. It was good for its day, at least the MLB Baseball, NFL Football titles. Astrosmash was also decent -- it was a juiced up Space Invaders that played ok. Only problem with the sports games is that you needed a second person to play -- you couldn't just play the computer.
-
I just downloaded Brothers in Arms 2 for the iphone/ipod and it has surprisingly good graphics to it, so far i have been impressed with it except for it seeming to freeze up every once in a while
Edit:
Actually I just restarted it and that got rid of the freezing and clipping

Give UT classic a spin sometime. The Game of the Year edition is very easy and cheap to acquire (or free, if you look hard enough) and there's no CD-key so you can LAN party with just one copy. UT2004 is a great game, don't get me wrong. But UT classic is, and always will be, the king. It's probably the best competitive shooter of all time (thus far.) It's also far more balanced than UT2004; it's much more dependent on skill rather than luck and weird double-jump prowess, which is why I like it. Every single weapon in the UT classic lineup is a brutal killer if used properly, unlike UT2004's lineup (the AVRiL, minigun, shieldgun, and assrifles are majorly weak and unbalanced, or have serious noobgun status.) And that's not to mention that the simplicity of the engine means that the maps are all built with BSP so there's no static meshes to get in your way. You should definitely play with us sometime. Contact me on Facebook and I'll help you get a copy and get set up with the latest patch and etc. http://www.facebook.com/sinedeviance
On the subject of UT3 ... even I can't run UT3. It requires quite a high-spec rig to run playable. Basically, it's like this -- if you can run UT3 and Gears of War on high settings, you can run Crysis on high settings. Unreal Engine 3 is a beautiful engine, though.
Well, I did have an Atari 2600 and an Intellivision, though I had them after NES. Then again you have to keep in mind that I was born the same year NES came out  My favorite Intellivision games were probably Astrosmash and Blockade Runner; I remember those two being the ones I played the most. I can't even remember what games we had for the 2600, I just remember that we had one. We did not have a 5200 or a Vectrex, but one of my friends had them. I did have some of the more rare consoles, such as the Sega 32X and Sega CD, TurboGrafx 16, Panasonic 3D0, Jaguar, and the Neo Geo. It was amazing what you could pick up at garage sales for next to nothing during the PlayStation era. The 3D0 is a perfect example; it retailed for close to $700 at launch in 1993, we picked one up for $50 in 1997 because the platform was dead by then. That system also had some excellent games; Return Fire, Dragon's Lair, and Off-World Interceptor are good examples.
EDIT: Also wanted to add something. Way back in maybe 1993, when I was about 8, we got a ZX Spectrum for $25 at a garage sale. That was my first computer. There was this B-52 Bomber sim game that came on a 5.25" floppy that I used to play on it. It was all vector-based but it was quite realistic. Does anyone have any clue what this game could have been called? I've been looking for it for ages but the search always turns up nil. I'd like to play it on an emulator someday.

I might check out your original UT sometime. I've been playing way to much BC2 and that game has been just pissing the hell out of me in multiplayer. Its not the people playing -- unless you find out they've been kicked later for using Aimbots.
-
I know a lot of you other PC gamers here may not be in to this, but it'd be cool if we had a 4banger group playing BC2 multi-player. Or I might join a BC2 clan or something and let you guys know which one if you are ever interested in maybe joining.
For me it's been like a 1 in 50 chance I actually get with a random squad in Rush, Conquest, Deathmatch that isn't "every butt-head for himself."
-
i tend to try to find a good clan server then favorite it... i have been playing in the MIA clan servers lately (my brother is a member so if thee are arsses on the server i yell at him and he gets an admin too kick them :twofingers:) i would join the clan but i don't have the time...a 4bangerjp group game would be sweet.
and they tend to have enough clan members consistently on to keep team work going..
-
I've started playing Dirt again.
I'd be up for some PC multi-player. How about L4D1 or L4D2? Dirt?
-
i don't have dirt. but id be up for L4D1 or 2... or any other valve game for that mater.

If the clans I check out are saying, "yeah you gotta be playing with us these dates/times every week, I'm probably not going to be able to join. I don't really know anything about how Clans typically work. I thought it'd just be a better way to play a decent multiplayer rounds when you have the time.
I don't know the gameplay in Left For Dead. I'd probably be interested in playing that one multiplayer too, though.
-
I have to figure out how to set up the VOIP for Steam. It's a PITA setting it up. Anyone use Teamspeak? We need to setup a time and day to play.
-
i don't have teamspeak.. usually in valve games you can just press c or v or something... i should realy invest in a real mic before too long as mine sucks. (vus the reason i don't have team speak)
ya i can't keep up with the playing requirements for clans so i just play on their public server and don't join...
-
Dirt looks cool. Is the multi-player mode half-way decent?

Actually, I haven't played it in multi. I think the best way to play that would be to use Hamachi to set up a LAN game rather then do a public game.
-
I didn't know about Hamachi. It sounds like a good way to enable consistent performing multi-player game-play.
I may get some kind of mic/headset deal.
So, I guess you sign up with Steam and then buy/download the games they have that you'd be interested in playing -- say Left for Dead, Dirt and so on?

That is pretty much how it works, but be careful with Steam, it has some evil drawbacks. For starters, make sure that if you're gonna lose your internet for a while that you turn Steam's offline mode on. Otherwise you will not be able to play any of the games you bought without connecting your system to the internets first. The other drawbacks are Steam's draconian DRM (which prevents patching/modding in most of the non-Valve games on Steam) and the fact that you don't get a physical copy of the game you just bought. They can also permanently disable your Steam account if you do something the admins don't like (i.e. cheating, laming, etc.) which means that you may have just lost $300 worth of games if you have a large Steam collection. It happened to my best friend once, someone hijacked his Steam ID and used an aimbot online in HL2, so his Steam account got deactivated and he lost everything. When he called Steam to fix it they said that there was nothing they could do and everything was non-refundable and non-transferable. I'm not saying this will happen to you; I'm just saying be careful.
I only use Steam to play the HL2 episodic content. I have physical copies of all the other Valve games I play. Those come with real DVD's with real CD-keys and are not tied to Steam. And it is beautiful.
-
Non-Valve games do come with real CD-Keys. You can even look them up on your account. You can also play the games without running steam at all if they are non-valve games. You have to dig into your Program Folder for Steam and then Steam Apps to find them. This is how I play ARMA 2 that I bought through steam. So now, it bypasses steam completely. There is no CD check like SecureROM or any other check because it's a Steam version where there is no physical copy.
-
if you loss internet/ steam can't connect it will let you go to offline mode to play your games after failing to connect twice... you just have to play the game connected to the internet the first time after that you can do offline mode. love steam it works 99.9% of the time. and auto updates unlike some game makers where they don't even host their own patches so you have to search the internet trying to find somewhere that will let you download it without a paid membership or having to wait 2 hours to start downloading... i should note i only have valve games on steam so no experience with other games on steam...

i have steam too - updates are fine and it works ok although i am still bitter about 2 of the games that they never updated and you could not use the patch from the retail (DVD) version.
-
I like steam and I don't. I have tried D2D but hated it. Not only do you have to initialize your game with a CD Key but you have to authenticate it through D2D! If you install the game more then 5 times, you have to contact D2D to reset your account. If you're into modding PC's you know how frustrating it can be when you have to reinstall. Then if this happens on a weekend you're screwed. At least with D2D you download the whole thing and you can save it. Although it's usually too damn big to save onto a DVD and they don't have it split up nicely so you have to do it manually.
Steam is nice since there are no CD keys to remember. You can install it as many times as you like as long as that computer has your Steam info. The downside is, you do not get to save the download file as Steam hides it someplace. Also, I kind of like having a hard copy in case I decide to play it several years down the road when maybe Steam and D2D aren't around. Although I don't think Steam is going anywhere. Not every computer I have is on broadband though.
I think they should have an option to buy a hard copy for maybe $10-20. Otherwise, the only other option is to download a bit torrent and use your Legal key. Then if your ISP is spying on you, they will send a TOS violation and tell you to delete it not knowing you actually paid for it.

CD-checks and SecuRom/StarForce are copy protection, not DRM.

Sorry, didn't know they changed that bit. Back in the day it used to be that you had to set it to offline mode BEFORE disconnecting it from the internets. I was moving one time and forgot to do this so I had to drive my system over to a friend's house and enable offline mode on his internet connection so I could play my Steam games until they moved our internet service. Fun stuff I tell ya

THIS is the DRM I was talking about. Steam's DRM will not work with retail patches for most of it's games. Instead you're supposed to patch through Steam using 'their' version of the patch, which often times is not the same as the retail version. Steam's DRM also does not allow modding in most of it's non-Valve games.

the game files aren't that hard to find for steam.. when i realized having steam on my c drive wasn't a good idea considering how huge the games are i just installed steam on the other hard drive and copied the game folders over.. sure their not compressed or in 1 file so it takes a while but it worked.. it would be nice if they had a burn to dvd option in steam though so you could back it up easily as you said.

-
So where are we at on this? Do we have a bunch of 4banger people joining Steam now? Should I join?
-
just the game folders :wall: .. don't even think there is an installer file per say for steam since it installs as it downloads. but im no expert im just happy when things work.
-
i noticed steam has a 75% of deal on codemasters stuff this weekend.. aka dirt 2 for 75% off... tempting but short on $ right now...

Joining Steam is free. If it's a wash then you're not out anything.

currently got quite a few games going
for PS3
COD Modern warfare 1 and 2. the second one was a little disappointing. it was short and easy to beat. only took me 2 hours on legendary.
i'm completely hooked on the need for speed games. had all of them since the original. right now i'm fooling with undercover
Borderlands-weird game
Gran Tourismo 5
and a few others
for XBOX360
assassins creed 1 and 2
Halo odst
Forza 2
and both Gears of War games
and a mishmosh of games i don't play but my sister enjoys.
-
I've been kicking some dust with Dirt. The physics are pretty good. Reminds me of GT as you can set the camber, caster, gearing, downforce and everything in between. Although I still can't beat the 'World Record'. I've got within 2 seconds. The tracks are cool though. I really like teh Japanese tracks as they are tight. If you have your car setup right you can skate around the 3's and 2's easily.
-
ive been playing Ricochet the last couple of days... basically because i don't realy have time to play games but needed to do something to relax and its an old enough game to load and play for only a few minutes. although there is only a total of 10 servers for it and there is only 1 with people on it every time i play.... never realy caught on and most the people that play it are insainly good.

Dirt sounds good. Jeffy, what do you use for a controller with it? Are you using keyboard, joystick, something else?

The game was designed with the console in mind so I use a 360 controller. (I don't own an Xbox) Works great and its way better then any PC specific controller. I used the older wired controller since I don't really care to worry about batteries.
I'm waiting for MW4 to be released as an exe. http://mtxgear.mektek.net/MW4/

Would actually be worth looking into if MTX wasn't currently such a piece of utter crap. Good luck getting it to connect to the master server, and if you get that far, good luck getting it to download anything properly via torrent.

The X360 controller IS an excellent controller ... IF you have an X360. However, on PC, it's not so excellent and has quite a few issues. The drivers are basically worthless, for starters. You can't set deadzones, which is a MAJOR problem in every racing game on PC that doesn't support XInput (read: damn-near all of them.) You can't turn the triggers into 'buttons' which is a problem on most of the games you'll find. There are 3rd-party drivers (XBCD) that try to work around these limitations, but they don't support XInput (which is necessary for the controller to work with 'Games for Windows Live' games) and the drivers currently have a major bug where they don't report the stick inputs properly in most games you use it with, so you get really sporadic movements or none at all. It does work extremely well for emulators, though. Also, Xpadder is an absolute necessity if you have an X360 controller; you should check it out if you haven't already, Jeffy.
Using a wired controller is obviously the best choice for the PC player because it saves them an additional $50 that they would have to spend on the X360->PC wireless dongle. I mean, if I were gonna spend nearly $100 on a game controller for PC, I'd buy something pro-grade instead of the X360 controller. But at around $40 for the wired version, it's not bad at all.

They are working on a non MTX version. I have an actual copy of MW4 someplace. I'm not sure if it will run on W7.
How about Diablo II or something?
-

Yeah, I read that somewhere. I'll definitely get the re-vamp once they release a non-MTX version. I do already have an official copy of MW4 but damned if I know where it is
How about Diablo II or something?
Huh? Diablo II was an awesome game, yeah. It's a bit dated now, unfortunately. You should know that there is a new game out called Torchlight and it is set in the same vein as Diablo. The game was developed by Runic Games, which is made up of ex-Blizzard employees that worked on Diablo I and II. The end game is VERY similar. However, Torchlight is awesome because it uses the more modern 'WoW' visual style, and it has a full 3D engine that absolutely rocks. They also added a pet system that simplifies certain boring tasks like constantly warping back to town to sell off loot. It's a low-budget game, and as such, it's very cheap. The only drawback to Torchlight is that there is no multiplayer; this is because Runic wants to turn it into an MMORPG a couple years down the road.
-
I'm just throwing out titles of older games so if we do a get together, we can all play without having to shell out $50-60.
-
Oh. Right on, then. I can't even play any of the newer PC games right now; my system doesn't have the spec for them. And I don't have an XBox Live gold account because I refuse to give Microsoft $50 a year just so I can have the 'privilege' of playing games I already spent $50+ on.
-
anyone play any of the army men games , they were my favorite games at one point in time... not sure if they work on windows 7.... found that Revolt doesn't work on windows 7 last week.. i loved that game but now it only loads correctly 50% of the time....

I used to have ReVolt on Dreamcast...

I'd be down for Diablo II.

Any other games anyone can think of that allows multi-players?

trackmania on steam has a free version with multiplayer. :pirate:

Any other games anyone can think of that allows multi-players?
StarCraft and the BroodWar expansion are always great stand-by's.
There are a ton of free games that are built on the open-source ioquake3 engine these days. Urban Terror and Open Arena are two excellent examples, and both are tons of fun in multiplayer. They also run extremely well on legacy hardware because they use very modest renderers. There are also Nexuiz, Alien Arena 2009, and Sauerbrauten, all of which are excellent multiplayer shooters. However, I avoid them because their renderers rely WAAAAY too much on heavy shaders, and as such, they either look like absolute My Little Pony or you get a slideshow unless you're running a very high-end GPU (I'm not, unless you consider a GeForce FX5950 Ultra to be high end. It was in 2003  )

I finished Portal a few weeks ago. I liked it. I haven't finished Dirt but I have started playing ArmA 2 again.
I'm waiting for MGS Rising, GT5, Little Big Planet 2 and Hero's on the Move. Also relaunch of Twisted Metal looked interesting. Maybe MOH Black OPs too.

I'm still getting mugged on most BC2 multi-player games. Certainly a few hackers in there that get tossed, but it's mostly these EA-"bulletproofed" players that are ranked 10-20+ higher than you. I say that because I am guessing EA just makes your character less killable the higher you rank. Should be rank classes on servers IMHO if players are all random multiplayer type deal.
Haven't joined any clans or anything. Maybe it was a youtube video this one clan shot that showed 9 players on one side of a road on the "jungle" map and you had the lead guy describing how to cross the exposed road and have the next guy provide cover and so forth. I kind of realized from that that from a "head" standpoint, this game could turn in to practically a full time effort for serious players/clans, and especially if they are playing for money (which only a handful probably are).
I do visualize network gaming growing like crazy. Maybe it's all the social networking sites, Facebook, stuff like that. After all, you see your old buds on a social networking site and those guys are 2500 miles away or all over the country, there's not much you can get together for, in real-time, without traveling, other than network gaming.
-
He could just be one laggy SOB too though. I have had that issue where they just don't die even with Mag ammo on a point blank shot guy to the face.

I have discovered what might be the best videogame ever made -- Dwarf Fortress. I started playing this game about a week ago and I can't let go. It's so addictive that I found myself playing it for seven straight hours the other night. It's one of those games where you look at the clock and it says 11pm, then you look again "ten minutes later" and it's 2am
The game has an incredibly steep learning curve until you figure out the interface, and the graphics are quite archaic (the interface is 100% ASCII with a bitmap graphic overlay, aka 16-bit sprites) but if you can come to grips with those two factors, it's probably the most rewarding gaming experience you will ever encounter. And the game is totally free to boot!
If you want to learn more about the game, you can get information and the latest version from here, but don't download the latest version just yet: http://bay12games.com/dwarves/ (http://bay12games.com/dwarves/)
Instead, check out this excellent beginner's guide first: http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/ (http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/)
The above beginner's guide is an awesome resource for new DF players. It will explain the finer points of the game and how to use the interface. It will also tell you how to get your first fortress started. There is a download link for the guide's version of the game. It's one of the '40d' versions, which are now deprecated. The new versions are called DF2010 and use a different version scheme altogether -- but more on that later. The zip file in the tutorial includes the game itself with a good font set and a good graphics set already installed. It is ready to play. It also includes a save file with an already-generated world and fortress site for the purposes of the tutorial. This means that you can jump right in to playing with the tutorial version of the game, whereas with the newer versions you first have to have your world generated, set up an embark location and profile, and a few other misc. things.
Although the version used in the guide is an older version, pretty much all of the game's gameplay features and mechanics are there. The newer versions were built with a new graphics method (so to speak) and are mainly bug-fix and performance enhancing releases. This means that once you get the basic ideas down and you figure out how the game works, you can go to the newer version without much hassle.
One thing I will tell you beforehand -- the guide pack of the game comes with a pre-set screen resolution of 1280x800. If you want to change the resolution to something else, please consult me first. In this game, you can't just pick a different resolution from a menu; instead, you have to change a few lines in the init file and figure out what your grid size should be. It's actually very confusing until you understand how it works, and then it's easy as pie.
If you have any further questions, you can ask me or you can consult the DF wiki, which can be found here: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page
If (when) you feel ready to move up to the newer versions and to bigger and better font and graphic sets, let me know. I'll point you in the right direction and tell you how to set this stuff up. It's actually really easy once you understand it all.

Anybody here play Red Dead Redemption yet? I was at a friends house the other night and he has it for xbox, it looks to be a wild west version of the GTA

It's alright. Saying it's GTA IV + Horses isn't entirely accurate, but it's similar. The single player experience is pretty awesome judging from what parts of it I've played. Don't bother with the multiplayer, though -- it was a huge letdown.
It won't be game of the year or anything, but it's a good followup to Red Dead Revolver.
-
The graphics from what I have seen look pretty good, I got some bestbuy gift cards so i might go pick it up after work today

Started playing yesterday (PS3) Lots of exploring to do. That is a lot of playing area. So for I've had my horse stolen, a wild hog killed the horse when we both fell down a steep enbankment. Riding and shooting is kind of hard. It's gonna take some practice. The shotgun is pretty sweet.

got assassins creed for putting lowering struts and coils in a friends honda, so ive been playing that.. lots of fun.... although the 3rd person thing is sometimes annoying..

Finally got around to OC'ing my PC. I didn't do anything to extreme. I'm at 4.0Ghz from 2.67ghz. Could probably squeeze out an extra 200-500 but I'm happy at 4.0Ghz.
I haven't tried to long load test it BUT it does run everything I use with no problems. Temps aren't bad either 32-34*C at low while it peaks around 50-ish on high.

run prime95 overnight, if it doesn't fail you're good to go.
that's quite good from 2.67 to 4GHz - did you increase the Vcore at all? what about memory, what's that running at?

Just about everything was tweaked except the memory. I have it set at 1066 but I have it overclocked to 1600. It's DDR3-1600 and it's stock voltage is 1.65v so it's fine.
The settings were recommended by EVGA (MB MFG.) on their forum.

Jeffy are you playing Dirt 2? That's the one I saw that was selling well over at Steam. Looks interesting to me.

I have Dirt but I don't have Dirt 2. I'd like to maybe get Dirt 2 though. I really like the Pike's Peak Hill Climb course.
The only thing I don't like about Dirt is for the US we got Travis Pastrami  instead of Colin McRae. In the UK it's still called Colin McRae Dirt.
From the demo's I've played of Dirt 2 it looks pretty good except it's really flashy. What I mean is that it's all about Ken Block and feels very X-Games-esque. All about sponsers and name dropping. The racing is still there though.

I downloaded Dirt 2 demo (Colin McRae) off Steam yesterday and i'll give it a shot.
On another note, anyone tried the triple head setup with ATI's eyefinity yet? just heard about it and wondering how it's working, i'm using a software triple head (softTH - it's free download) but it's tricky with lots of games, works well in rFactor but a h/w solution would def make it lot more convenient. Not sure if ieyefinity supports different resolution monitors (softTH does).

Poor Travis Pastrana . Codemaster is probably making a ton on the ads. I'm going to try out a demo.
-
well, dirt 2 demo it's a fail - doesn't start and there's no messages or errors just exits silently (i don't even get the splash screen) - maybe i'll try to download the standalone
I tried Race-on demo, it sucks imo

I was reading reviews on Dirt 2 http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/dirt2. A few users are suggesting other PC players get a XBox type controller.

I'm using a Nvidia GTX 280 SSC but I'm a bit irritated. Nvidia held the fastest cards then then got complaisant and while they were sleeping ATI brought out the big guns, the HD 5970 which is still faster and cheaper then Nvidia's 480 series. Nvidia's 295 Co-op is slower then the 5970 and was never sold in high enough numbers and is unobtainable now. Not sure if I want to run multiple cards. My board supports SLI but I'm not sure if I want to wait for Nvidia to wake up.
I don't really like the whole multi-monitor split screen thing as it forces you to have a minimum of 3 monitors unless you like looking at a big bar in the middle of your viewing area. Kind of expensive if you're using big monitors. Although I could see a triple 19" 16:10 or maybe even 21". Then again for the price you could buy a single 27" or 30" and save money. I believe the monitors need to be the same for it to work.

Honestly, I wouldn't play it without one. XBox 360 wired controllers are cheap and work great. I use one for most games that aren't FPS's.

i use a 25.5'' acer (1920x1200) as my center monitor and 2 x 19'' 1280x1024 for the sides. I have the center setup as 1920x1050 (with 2 black bars on top and bottom) in game and it lines up perfectly with the 1024 vertical resolution on the side ones - it really makes a whole lot of difference in racing games, i don't like playing with only the center anymore but for Crysis for example it takes a big hit on frames per second so i can't really use it at full detail so for that i rather just use just the center one. Lots of games don't even support it so that's also a bummer. The thing that got me excited about eyefinity is that it basically creates a virtual monitor out of the 3 so it's transparent for the game, i was hoping you can have different res monitors and play with the alignment and depth/perspective for the sides, they will probably get to that in time as well. The monitors don't cost that much though, the 4:3 ones you can get really cheap second hand and since they're only for peripheral vision they don't have to be spot on as far as colors, the ones i use have differences compared to the center one but I don't even notice during gameplay. I'll post some pics of the setup one of these days

I've got an older 17" Samsung at 1280x1024 on the left and a 30" Dell 3008 2560x1600 in the center. Then I've got the PC also providing signal to a 1080p Panasonic projector that's on the other side of the room. I'd love to have 3 x 30" monitors (why not all 3D ready, too?), then a couple of new state of the art graphics cards.
But for any kind of work I'm doing at my place, I've got decent screen real-estate already. 3 screens side-by-side together, for me, would be just for gaming.
So, I might see how the gaming field evolves over the next few years before I jump in with new gear. I mean, I'm even getting by ok with my 9800gtx+ cards in SLI, so lately I haven't even been in a hurry to upgrade those.
But 3 monitor gaming and decent 3D home entertainment gear looks interesting, the games/3D movies are going to be out there, so all that could start to become more commonly used over the next 5-10 years. So, I'm certainly not turning up my nose (I also wouldn't be surprised if the monitors themselves, in the next decade, start selling as long, curved, one-piece units that give you a 90 degree field of view in 3D)
-
I'd love to have 3 x 30" monitors (why not all 3D ready, too?), then a couple of new state of the art graphics cards.
that's the problem, you can have 2 graphic cards and 3 monitors but the game would still render on one monitor or 2 if you set them up as extended desktop (as 1 large monitor), the 3rd one would not be supported (some games do but it's also software and that slows it down)
to play on all 3 you need the Matrox triple head (but the resolution was limited last time i checked) or a dx library that would render it for you on 3 monitors by creating a virtual large display composed of all 3.
One guy at work just bought an ATI 5870 and mentioned the capability of playing triple head and that got me all curious about the hardware builtin solution
never played a game in 3d, i'd love to find a store with a demo setup to check it out

For some reason, I started playing Battlefield 2 again...and I can't stop....I think I'll finally need to pick up the Bad Company today.

I'll have to get one of those. Not going to have chance to get one locally, so I'll just order it.

I play on a small 19" 16:10. I'll upgrade to a 27" someday but it's not a priority. I'm sitting only a few feet from the screen so I don't need a really big monitor right now. I have run extended on two monitors as well as extended to a TV. Works well when I want to watch someone on the TV instead of the computer. It's connected to the DTS/THX home theater.
There is a 5870 that is setup for 6 monitors. Pretty crazy.

I didn't care for teh wireless since I'm sitting right next to teh computer and didn't want another set of batteries to tend to.

Thinking about selling my Evga GTX 280 SSC while it's still worth something. It's a great card but I want something a bit faster. ARMA 2 is a hardware hog.
How much do you think I should sell it for? I was thinking $250. I have it OC'ed to 280 FTW specs and have no problems.
Still not sure if I want to get a ATI 5870 or a Nvidia GTX 480.

Yeah it is a good video card. Still pretty damn good too. Plays just about everything on HIGH or Very High, except for ARMA 2. Although I get anywhere from the 20's to mid-50's. Portal played pegged at 75-76. L4D2 as well. Dirt was pretty good as well, too. It's just I want to eek out a bit more. Supposedly SLI 280 will be about the same speed as a 480 though. So someone with a 280 already could get a nice performance boost for about the price of a 260.

I went ahead and ordered an xbox controller off amazon, so I should be ready to go in a few days. I'll probably give Dirt 2 a buy. Will let you guys know my username

Downloaded BF Bad Company yesterday. I've hadn't had a chance to try multiplayer too much, but I am very impressed with the single player game so far. Graphics are a huge step above previous BF games. Love the destruction in the environment and better death/blood graphics.

Dirt 3. Looks nice but I'm getting tired of Ken Block.

I've got the controller, but my main Seagate HD apparently died on me a few days ago after 1 1/2 years of use. I have all the files backed up on a couple of external drives, but that's the only good news about the whole deal.
I just received the new HD I ordered, so I am putting things back together. But it's taking forever.

check the warranty on the drive, i know seagate had 3 and 5 years on some of them at some point.
-
I think it's 3 years. I'm personally still kind of surprised I had problems. And maybe I misdiagnosed. But I spent several nights pulling the system apart, replacing all the SATA cables, cleaning the whole machine out for dust while I was in there. But on startup it still wouldn't detect the Seagate drive and I could hear the drive still repetitively cycling. I am assuming failure.
I ordered a Kingston SSD and installed that, but its just 128GB and will just be where I keep OS and the programs I generally use. Right now I've got video and everything else sizeable on external drives. But I am probably going to order another Seagate internal drive or two, since coming in I had had good luck with that make.

How Long Does The Coverage Last? Our warranty periods are 1 year, 2 years, 3 years or 5 years from the documented date of purchase, depending on the type of product and where it was purchased.

Squeezed out an extra 100mhz to make it to 4.3Ghz. I might try 4.4 but I don't think I'll make it to 4.5 without upping my CPU voltage from 1.40 to something higher. Don't really want to do that though.

I'll have to give you my username/password to my EA account. I had my BC2 guy up to level 29 or 30 out of 50 and had advanced pretty far with weapons for all 4 characters -- medic, engineer, assault, sniper. So you can try out stuff like the Barret 50 cal sniper rifle with that account
One of the problems with random multiplayer is apparently you've got people using cheat codes that are ahead of any kind of punkbuster updates. One guy administering a server said this to me. So those players are basically milking other random players for points so they can advance up the ranks faster.
Its a good game, but I've kind of backed off playing random multiplayer for the time being.

Still getting familiar with the maps...just a lack of time on my part. Had a great time yesterday playing some of the "4 squad" matches. Fast pace and some great strategy going on with some of the squads that work together regularly. Haven't noticed any cheating in the games I've played so far.

When your own play is decent and you know the maps, but then you see some player who's the same rank as you or less and has 32 kills while you have 8 for the same time elapsed, then you'll start to say: "I think some $hit is up here." When you see this in a few hundred games, then you might back off until punkbuster gets updated.
But personally, I think the way to play that game is clan vs clan. Random multiplayer strikes me as fish-in-a-barrel for the nefarious types out there.

I've got my controller in and got my system mostly back in order; also got Dirt 2 off steam. I sprang for one of those X Box Wireless controllers because I'll probably be playing games on a monitor that's well away from the PC, so I could use the range
So I get the controller package thinking I've got everything I need -- controller + usb cable with connection for controller (this serves as the charging doc). But with Dirt 2 installed and the controller charged, my Windows Live account all set up etc., I'm noticing my controller inputs aren't being received. I was thinking the charge cable also served as the receiver (yeah right)
Turns out I didn't buy the Wireless controller package with the receiver included. So I had to order a frigging receiver and I'm still waiting around for that.
Tried out Dirt 2 using the keyboard, and I do see the fun potential there. Still, Dirt2's pre-race trailer/pit-area deal would probably appeal far more to learner's-permit age boy racers than oldsters like me. But it's funny as hell to see old BMXer Dave Mirra listed as a driver, though. Good for that dude.
-
I've got the controller/receiver and have been playing Dirt 2 on PC. Thanks Jeffy for advising the XBox contoller -- makes a big difference. If you guys are playing it, my username on XBox live is "TaTas Akimbo." You really get in to it driving manual gears and with helmet cam/in cab perspective. Vehicle and track selection is awesome and its probably the first driving video game I've played in close to 40 years where I find myself sweating, my legs moving like they're hunting for pedals and myself cussing like it was the real thing  It's on a large projection screen at 1080p, so that might have something to do with all the reflex actions it's causing me.
Throw in the multiplayer online and I have to admit that driving/racing video games have come a long, long way over the years.

i downloaded the Dirt2 demo off codemaster's website (the one from Steam didn't work) - i couldn't get it to work on triple head but i haven't tried hard at all. Looks pretty sweet, i play it with a steering wheel and pedals and it's ok - got thru the Morocco race about 10 times, i did 3:12 my best performance on it, but was pretty much stuck there after that (3:13, 3:14 and such). Not sure in the full version if you can get any improvemets for the vehicle (other than the stupid dice and hula girl for the dash).

You can adjust settings for differential, suspension height, suspension stiffness, brake balance, downforce and gearing. Naturally the courses will throw in pavement, dirt, grass or some combo thereof, so you need to keep in mind where on the courses your settings could help you or hurt you. I don't know if there are performance, suspension mods or anything as you advance; I know they do let you "buy" certain race packages for certain course as you advance in the game. So these packages may give you a faster ride, better handling, I don't know.
It's cool driving the different 2wd/4wd vehicles in manual; they are geared anywhere from 3spd to 6spd. I've got to get used to how much power the vehicles apparently have -- the front ends gets light pretty fast even in high gears; you need to upshift or brake to keep the front end on the ground and have some steering control.
-
Jeffy are you playing Dirt 2 yet? I'd bet it'd be huge fun playing it online with a bunch of people from 4BangerJp -- total madness. The Trophy Trucks, RWD Buggies and "Raid" (?) lineup -- FJ Cruiser, Lancia, Hummer H3, "Bowler (something)" -- all :smokes: The Rally Cars rock hugely also. Great game, well worth the buy off Steam. :beers: to Jeffy for the suggestion on it.

I'll give this a bump. I've been playing Fallout New Vegas since there has a been a lot of hype over it. I like it.
I'm gonna see if I can get a copy of Dirt 2 to try out.
Not sure if I'll jump aboard the whole COD/MOH games as they are getting rather boring. Still playing ARMA 2 occasionally. Although some of the guy's I play with seem to have gone on a sabbatical.
-
i finished assassins creed 1 and started playing battlefield bc2 again (finished off all the weapons except 1 for the medic and 2 for the engineer)... will probably get assassins creed 2 sometime, actually im hoping for bestbuy to have it on the cheap games list for black Friday this year ( @ $5 a game you can't go wrong even if you only play it for a few hours).
-
Picking up COD before lunch....guess I know what I'm doing the rest of the week.

I wonder if you get jail time in Cuba for playing COD Black Ops
this one made me scratch my head
"Medal of Honor" from Electronic Arts Inc. was banned from U.S. military bases after it went on sale last month because it let players take on the role of Taliban fighters shooting U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan. Electronic Arts later removed the option.

The Govt. getting into areas it has no real business in. The Govt already said the EX won't carry them. EA even backed down and removed that part. I'm sure soldiers will buy the game no matter. You know it's probably some Senator who overheard something from some intern and came to the assumption that it will offend military families.
Has there ever been a game that didn't have an OPFOR? I think it's called Solitare...

Betting that Castro's people are actually getting kick-backs from EA for the publicity. Castro himself has probably had a copy of the game since earlier this year and is probably the top guy, world-wide in Black-Ops multiplayer

I just cant picture castro sitting around playing video games but then again you never know

Been playing Dirt 2 on PC now for a few months and have about 60 hours clocked on it. I see Amazon's selling downloads of it for 10 bucks these days http://news.cnet.com/8301-13845_3-20019047-58.html (price drop probably due to upcoming Dirt 3 release).
Never have gotten the steering and other settings dialed in like i'd want and I've messed with every combination and combed the forums looking for answers on it repeatedly. Probably going to move on to Dirt 3 if the reviews are decent (kind of hoping any kinks in Dirt 2 will have been worked out in the third release)

Probably going to move on to Dirt 3 if the reviews are decent (kind of hoping any kinks in Dirt 2 will have been worked out in the third release)
i got it off Steam for 19.99 - is downloading now (it's 10GB), i hope to get it working tonight with my triple-head setup
I also ordered black-ops online from BestBuy (that will come in the mail) - not cheaper than Steam version but I had a $50 gift card i was trying to use for a while
Anyone got F1 2010?

I just bought some classics recently. Game Boy Pocket, Gameboy games Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2, Tetris, Ms. Pac-man, and Super Off Road. Re-living a little bit of my childhood. The Game boy was a thrift store find and the games I picked up at eStarland.com.

ok, so i received COD Black Ops - installed it and it hangs right passed the intro, no errors or anything just no go. I am running XP. that sucks. Could be my NVidia drivers since they are a bit old so i'll try that next.
-
I have black ops for 360. Got it the night it came out. Started the game and got halfway but then started playing multiplayer online. Anyone else have a 360?
-
i updated to latest NVidia drivers and the game freezes in the same spot (right after him saying they went in Cuba to kill Castro), so i didn't get to play at all. Read some posts out there that there are other guys having the same issue. Didn't get to play any of it, waste of money so far (and time). oh well...
-
I installed Resident Evil 5 but haven't played it yet. I uninstalled Fallout New Vegas. Something's up with my Dirt2 download so I've got to do that one over again. It's not wanting to extract.

is it the Dirt2 Demo - i had an issue with it on Steam, got it directly off the Codemasters server and worked. I bought the full version from Steam and that works no problem though, you might be able to register the game with steam if you have the key (if that's not the way you are getting it).

Nope full version. I think it got corrupt.

Got it installed. Kinda lame that they force you to create a MS Live account.
Did my first lap. Couldn't figure out the brakes but still got 1st. Was pretty crappy run. Cars all screwed up. Wow, they really dumbed down everything in Dirt2. You can't change any settings on the cars. No brake bias, no gearing, no bound or rebound. You get stupid dash trinkets though! The game looks great and I like how they have you driving Colin's STi. Too bad his Xgames car was a different color. The Baja race is still hokey. I don't like how they have the Mitsubishi Dakar truck mixed in with the Dakar H2, some Toyota FJ Cruiser and a Dakar Bowler. Oh and then I'm driving a lifted Dodge Ram 4x4 for some reason.
Still even though it's dumbed down it's still fun. It's a lot more arcade/ Sega Rally and less technical.

there's a setting somewhere in the XML config file where I think you can turn car tweaks on but i didn't play with it yet - had to turn on full screen back as for some stupid reason i couldn't do it from the game. the config is under My Documents/My games/Dirt2... something like that.

You probably found the menus already but -- except for some of the multi-player races where the "host" has disabled it-- you should find yourself able to adjust brake bias, gearing, lift, down-force, suspension, differential before the race. Then there's the Options menu (you go outside and it's the "table" to the right of the "News" one) ; under one category on it there are "advanced" settings that let you adjust controller responsiveness.
Try the Kincaid Ford Trophy Truck -- 3 spd and even with gearing on highest setting it's hard to go full throttle without losing traction (unless you're going in a straight line)

ANyone rush out and buy a GTX 580 yet?

Still thinking about doing the 460 SLI.
-
I was probably going to stop with the 9800GTX plus SLI Im doing and swap one of those out for a new 2 chip card with an HDMI out. I've got a Yamaha YSP setup that could benefit from the HDMI connection (if Im getting it correctly that you can use the video card for audio output)

i have audio over HDMI for my media PC in the living room - works well - it's a built-in ATI though, didn't try it with any of my NVIDIA cards but it should work if the card supports audio over HDMI feature, you need to select the audio output device as HDMI if i remember correctly (or whatever is listed in the properties).

9800GTX? That's a really old card. I have never tried pushing audio out. I have a Creative Fatality Pro card. Don't have it connected to the home theater just headphones.
Supposedly the 460 SLI is faster then the 580. Also, I can get two SC EVGA's for $375 for both. That's something like $175 less then a reflex 580. Seems like a good deal. I still get good FPS's with my 280SSC though. 100 FPS for Resident Evil 5. L4D2 is also pretty fast as well. The only downside is Arma 2 OA puts the beatdown on just about any card out there. Doesn't officially support SLI either. Good thing is, my friends haven't been playing! Bastards!
I think I'll be passing on Black Ops and the new MOH.
I should have Dirt 2 setup tomorrow maybe...

The 9800GTX+ was mid-range a year and a half ago when I got the pair of them. But it's on the low end now. My setup could go for a 400 or 500 series NVidia card...maybe a pair.

The 9800 was outdated when it shipped. It's old technology. It was basically an 8800 with a fancy new name. The 8800 was new back in 2006. In SLI, it's a bit faster then a single 280 GTX though. Two 280's is about as fast as a single 480. 580 is overpriced as it's brand new. The 460 in SLI is faster and cheaper which is why I've been looking at them. The downside is that I won't have an upgrade path but then I've never upgraded with SLI. I've almost ended up buying the next single solution since by that time my card is so old that you can't find them anymore.
So I'd save $200 on the initial purchase then say I save $100 a year and by the time my stuff is out dated, I would have enough to buy card.

Ah, cool! L4D2 has two new campaigns with the L4D crew.

i was just playing that last night... at-least 1 new weapon also... also played the mutation mode for the first time. interesting running around with unlimited ammo m60's although i was left wishing i could bring the gun up to my shoulder and actually aim after playing BC2.

:finger: I saw that mentioned by a tech writer in some review of the 9800s I'd read early last year before I built my current system. Still even for what was basically a 3 year old card, the 9800 was still getting strong reviews last year (even the new reviews for it then at NewEgg were 5 for 5).
And the pair I've got did the job of getting a signal to three separate monitors, working in SLI for games on high to highest settings on one 2560x1600 screen, and keeping the price to about $250 total for both cards.
Could have spent $400-500 for one card -- maybe a 280 or 295 -- when I was doing the build last year. But then I'd probably have two of those in SLI now and wouldn't be interested in moving up to the 400 or 500 card(s) :blbl:

Yeah, I'm playing it now and found that the bridge on the first campaign is tough! So many tanks. I tried hitting all three generators quickly then running to the bridge and it was a no-go. I think 4 tanks came out at the same time! The SPAZ12 is pretty cool but reloading is SO SLOW. I haven't seen anything else yet.

My Nephew is running my old GTX 8800 OC in his computer (my old one). Seems to do fine but if he ever pays me back, I'll give him my GTX280 SSC when I go with some 460 SLI's.
I'm only running 1440x900 on a 19" 16:10. I'll probably get a 24" sooner or later as they are dirt cheap.

So, I've been playing a lot of Dirt 2. I haven't done any online stuff yet. I'm playing casual and the AI still seems to be pretty aggressive. Not to bad though. My favorite car so far is the MG Metro 6R4. it's quite quick which makes it great for carrying your speed through the turn and into the straightaway. Oh and I'm getting around 133FPS with everything cranked up to High or Ultra which is really good.

me too (playing Dirt2) - got to level 60 but nothing else happens once you get to about 40 (i think) same tracks. I like the trailblazer at Utah, pretty cool. the open wheel kicks ass on that track, if you keep the speed up you can take any corner at high speed with no skidding, if you slow down you're off the road pretty quick. Graphics are good but the game get's old once you went thru all the tracks (they have different events but really not much of a difference between them). What i don't like is that no matter what you set your gearbox at they alway beat you off the start (even on manual transmission). Didn't play online either. Oh, and i played to level "Serious", i should probably up that as i get 5 to 15 seconds over the second place usually, maybe will make it more interesting.
I still didn't get to play Black Ops, doesn't work - a lot of people have the same problem, I wish i could return the stupid thing.
-
I could probably bump the difficulty up a level or two but I'm usually playing between watching TV and checking up online. Hence casual. I like to play clean with very little bumping. It's impossible to do that on the higher levels it seams until you get a good lead.
I've noticed the huge lead they get off the line, too. It seems to get diminished if you shorten up the gearing but then you're screwed if there are fast straights.
-
I just finished God Of War, Ghost of Sparta on my PSP...
-

that's the thing, even with the lowest gearing possible (i tried both ways) and even with the vehicle marked with the highest acceleration the AI still gets a jump on you at the start. It is more obvious on the trucks, with the cars I get pretty even or close to what AI is accelerating from a standing start.
-
Haven't had a chance to play in a while, but found that some multiplayer rally races on Dirt 2 would let you start in higher gears -- 2nd or 3rd in manual. Forget the race type/start type though that lets you do this. You want to start in 2nd in all races but some don't seem to let you do this.

Well, I've been using the MG more and more. It doesn't get left behind like some of the other cars. You can't jsut floor it though. Like a real car you've got to make sure the tires aren't breaking grip. I did one of the LA Domination missions where you're going several laps and was able to get a really healthy lead. 1.5 sections on the group.

Looks like it's influenced by the film LA Confidential a little bit. Rockstar does seemingly appear to be getting good at creating game characters based on live action performers.

It's weird...little stuff like the visualizer on iTunes actually showing pulses right as the beats happen...

Just played Black OPs for a couple of hours...maximum settings...didn't even blink.
Sub woofer isn't kicking on for some reason...trying to use LFE...will install my ceiling surround speakers maybe tomorrow night and then I can let the receiver try to calibrate itself with the fancy microphone thingy.

did you turn it on, they usually have their own power. also make sure your computer output (i assume you're playing this on your newly acquired PC and Yamaha surround system) is set to 5.1 or 7.1 (or whatever you have). There's also a subwoofer frequency cutout setup in the surround system, you could have it too low, try to raise it see if that works. The microphone setup is to detect the listening distance from the speakers, won't make much of a difference on the subwoofer since that one is a single and doesn't really matter where is located. I had a Yamaha 7.1, was a nice system, i did the microphone setup but from what i remember i still had to do some manual tweaking afterwards.

Yep..it's on...it's a JBL and has a couple of lights on the fron that are red when there is no signal (or not enough input) and they turn green when it is making waves.
The way I had it set up before was with as a pass-through to all of the speakers, but figured I would try the LFE as that is the way the Yamaha book said to set up. I'll futz around with it some more this week when I have time. Speant all weekend painting...and then playing COD....

Started Black Ops on PS3 and Red Dead Undead.

Been playing Dirt 2 as well as Arma 2 OA. Oh and Katamari Forever on the PS3.

went "old" and installed nfs underground 2 on my computer, i don't know why but i love that game.. something about souping up low hp cars and driving them in a totally unrealistically handling game... but that ended real fast when i got a 23" acer monitor for Christmas so now im playing bc2 and l4d again... dirt 2 is 33% off on steam through the end of the year and is realy tempting me to buy it...
-
I have L4D2. I think it's on sale for $9 as well off steam.

Kids have been playing Red Dead Redemption, NCAA Football 2011, Baseball 2k 10....Xbox...the football is awesome. Like watching a real game...same with the baseball.

Whew...just did some XBox Kinect...that thing is incredible...good-bye Wii....

Dirt 2 is $5.00 on steam today so i finally got it. after my brother got it a few weeks ago I've been itching to buy it and figured that steam would offer another great deal on it before new years... now i just have to wait 2 hours for it to download.

Won all of the X Games. Got the Ford Escort MKII. Finished 95% of the other missions. Only those that just unlocked need to be finished. Then there's wold tour or something. I haven't paid much attention to those challenges. I think my favorite is China Trailblazer. It's very fast and you don't have a navigator. You can't really get much of a peak of what's ahead since you're usually on top of it faster then you can lock back down. I wish the Baja levels were more open like the China missions instead of that stupid track. Also, I noticed the stats for the cars aren't always telling you the whole truth. I like the old Evo IX for the Trailblazer. The MG is great for the indoor rally stuff. I'm a bit torn between the old STI and the Evo IX for most everything else. Baja, I'm usually in the PRC-1 Buggy. I have the Dodge, Highline, Bowler, VW and H3 as well. The H3 is pretty good. I think the Bowler is quicker but it's fighty. I still haven't gotten used to the way it drives yet.
L4D2, played through the new SP but still wasn't able to get though the last part of the last stretch. That stupid bridge with all of the tanks. The AI is so stupid and isn't able to climb up fast enough and they end up getting swarmed at the bottom of the ladder.
-

that one took me a while to beat. ended up having to run up the ladder fast and as soon as the last ai gets on the bridge flip the switch and instantly run down the stairs and hope you beat most of the swarm to the generator before you get bogged down... i ended up getting to the fence then got bogged down and had to throw a Molotov at my feet to burn the zombies while i had enough heath left to start the generator (almost instantly starts at that stage unlike the first time you start it).. basically you have to get it done before the tanks spawn...
i ended up spending most of the afternoon playing bc2 and fiddling with overclocking my radeon 4800. i about got it down so i can use my new monitor with basically full settings with a playable frame rate. its my first time oc anything so ive been taking it in small steps. but ive been pleased with the improvements so far.

I got started up the generators fine. It's teh stupid bridge where you have to climb the ladder and wait. Then all the tanks start swarming in and of course the M2 in the bridge doesn't sweep far enough to be any use. I first tried hitting all the generators in a row quickly but found that instead of just one tank at a time you get all three. Then when you get to the bridge, you hit the lever and you get an additional 4-6. So it was better to take out the tanks one at a time with the generators. Although the AI is so stupid that they get caught at the ladder and by that time they're going down like domino's and the tanks already climbing up the ladder.
I've also tried placing the gas cans near the bridge so I can shoot them from above but that doesn't really work when your AI are too stupid to climb up.
-
i agree with your first half.. but the entire point of the bridge is that it goes up like 10 feet after flipping the switch then the closest generator dies and one person (you) have to jump off the bridge and restart it and die after starting it aka why its called the passing.. you aren't supposed to be able to kill all of those tanks at the end.. or that was my take on it and it said i beat the level when i restarted the 1 generator and died.. i kinda had a heads up to this because i played the l4d2 version of it first where you see bill dead....

Ah, see I haven't gotten that far. Now that you say the generator needs to restart that makes more sense as to why you're not supposed to sit up on the bridge.

Played COD Black Ops on XBox 360 with family I was visiting. Ended up in the horizontal split screen that lets two players play from the same location on the same screen. I guess it was ok overall. Played Havana and a few other locations multi-player. Couldn't really say there was anything about the game-play that spy-novel enthusiasts would descrivbe as "black." But it was different at least..

I am not totally wowed with it. I have done the whole thing and am now doing it again on a harder setting. Meh, I don't like that you can't bypass some ofthe cut sceens. Kinda weird going from Cuba,to Nam, to WW II, back to Nam.
I feel bad for people who bought the JK Black Ops edition. There is only one level a Jeep in the game and it was based in 1968 or something like that.

I got frustrated with that one. The part I didn't like was that for the general map, the checkpoints would respawn very quickly. If you walk away and turn around, they might spawn back like nothing happened.

x2 got it on black friday in 2009 and have yet to finish it.. check point respawn way to fast and driving has bad characteristics which would normally be OK in a fps but you are driving so much that its gets annoying as heck.

F1 2010
I like the simulation better than R-Factor ones, but the garage tweaking is weaker. Good graphics and overall track design is good but looks like they rushed to release it and is more geared towards console than PC. Can't wait for rFactor2 if they ever end up releasing it (it's been the talk for 2 years and i quit waiting lately, don't even check the news anymore)

I'll mess around with it for a while. For $16.99 used I can't complain.

I think I finished Dirt 2. There doesn't seem to be anything else opening.

yeah, it sucks after a while, the tracks (or stages) are all the same once you unlock all of them and going up in class adds little to the experience. I like Utah the most btw (I probably mentioned that before)

I tried the Time Trial for Utah, and it was insane. Whoever Haggis is must have spent a lot of time testing. He's cutting through the weeds and his car's running flat. Some people have too much time on their hands.
Maybe I'll go back to Dirt I. I really like the Pikes Peak Map.

Has anyone else noticed that when playing Dirt 2 their video card runs hotter when in the loading screens than when racing? after overclocking my video card i left the ati ccc open when playing dirt on my second monitor and have been noticing that during racing the temps stay around 75-79* but when in loading screens it goes up to 83-86* seems weird to me that the gpu would be working harder when loading than playing.. but everything runs smooth so im happy
-
Don't know, I'm running a Nvidia 280GTX. Runs about 90-140 FPS in game.
-
what do you use to find the fps in game? i found the setting for valve games but not for other games.

I use what Nvidia has built into it. I think it's Fraps.

Too anal for me. Not really a game other then the fact it's on a PC. I did like MS Combat FS though.

i downloaded fraps. looks like im getting 37-59fps in race usually its around 42 fps. looks like during the load screens there is no limit on fps and my video card pumps out 190fps and the heat goes up after loading is done fps goes back down to 60ish for menus and the temp goes back down to normal... not too worried though.. I'm going to try to squeeze a few more mhz out of my gpu and memory to get my frame rate up in bc2... its flirting with 30fps and drops down into the high 20's now which creates some problems

Hmm, what card is that? I have my card OC'ed to one card up. Haven't bothered to push it any further. Although since I'm at 4.2Ghz, my CPU's no longer a bottle neck.
At the load screens, I'm at 300FPS.

OK, tech-guru's; question time. I have a (dinasour, yes, I know!) Inter Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4GHz with an NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT card in it and I am using my Sony Bravia full HD TV as a monitor; how do I make it better to fly the FSX, cause the graphics quality is not the best BY FAR!
-
Upgrade to a better video card and consider OC'ing the Q6600. I had my old E6600 up to 3.33Ghz and it was very stable. 3.0Ghz is a no brainer really. Upgrading the video card to something like a 9800 would be a big jump and shouldn't cost too much. Although you could go with a 460GTX for not much either.
Played some Original Dirt. Wow, the cars are clunky. The tuning is a bit too much. Brakes work too well on dirt which is weird. Graphics aren't that bad.

you need a better videocard.
you can O/C you q6600
I have FSX, you can change the res and features in the options, i run everything at full but it's still sucky looking (core2duo at 4GHz, GTX280 at 729MHz)

what card though, that sounds too hot, you sure it doesn't throttle down once is over 80*(I've seen that, happened to me to get it 1/2 speed and i didn't know what was going on, everything was choppy)? before I watercooled my 280 once it was going over 80* i started to get artifacts and also freezing in gameplay, might want to look into upgrading your heatsink (also the memory gets quite hot and that's where i seen the freezing)

Ive just got a ati hd 4870 for a video card. other specs Core 2 duo E8400 @3 Ghz and 4 GB of Ram. i have the video card oc from 750MHz for gpu and 900Mhz for memory to 820 and 1000 respectively. i think im going to mess around with the manual fan settings to get it to push some more air through... this is my first experience with overclocking anything so Ive been reading up on old threads about overclocking the 4870 which gets to be a real mess.. i don't think im going to go any higher than i am now other than messing around with fan control to cool it down some or else throttle it back if i can't get it below 80*... but it only goes to or above 80 when in the dirt loading screens after races lol.. i should just lower graphics quality on some games but im too bullheaded sometimes when it comes to games and graphics .

OK, it seems overclocking is the first step; so, HOW do I overclock? To be honest, I've heard of it before, but I have NO IDEA what it is...

based on your motherboard there's a certain process in bios although most are the same. I would google your cpu and get the settings other used successfully (FSB, multiplier, core voltage is what you're looking for - there are more settings but i don't think you want to push the envelope too far). Then look for your memory and get the O/C specs for that, I run my DDR2800 at about 900MHz with 2.1v (but that can be different for your DIMMs so don't take that as the setting you should use) - i also have the FSB and memory at 1:1 which I understand gives the best performance, FSB is 1800 from 1333 stock.
You will also need a really good heatsink (or you'll fry the CPU) and possibly lap the CPU as well (I did that and it gave me about 5 deg drop, but that depends on what you start with, if it's flat to begin with you might not need or get as good of an improvement). The other thing is the thermal paste that goes in between the heatsink and the CPU, there are 2 types you will want to use, 1 is ceramic (preferred) and the other one is called silver something (can't remember, it's been almost 2 years since i did my setup) - this silver one is a bit dangerous as it's conductive so you need to be very careful with it.
You might also want a memory cooler, they are fairly cheap, its a dual fan module that snaps on top of the DIMMs - keeps them cooler when you o/c and increase the voltage.
PCI express speed can also be improved (i think i am at 112MHz from 100 standard but don't quote me on this as it's been a while since i looked in the bios) - also, is yours 16x, if it isn't then you'll get a bottleneck right there regardless how much you overclock.
the last one is your mobo chipset - before i watercooled my rig (in which i have a waterblock for the chipset) I had an upgraded heatsink with a fan to keep it cool
but this it all depends on how much you overclock, so imo if you can't get a decent increase in speed without too much investment you're probably better off getting a corei5 mobo, cpu and memory and a decent videocard (like Jeffy said, you can get a 9800 quite cheap these days) - it will outperform your q6600 any day.
-
He should be able to go from 1066 to 1333 on the FSB and instantly get 3.0 without any effort. Q6600's OC just like the old E6600's. Just make sure to unlock your memory so it's not OC'ed.
An E8400 is a second Gen chip with the FSB already at 1333 aka: FSB 333. Although you might be able to bump it up to 1500.
Unless you have some performance RAM, it probably won't take to much OC'ing. I'd probably just go do the FSB and leave it for now.

go thru your bios without saving anything, you'll get familiar with the settings - if you have a laptop you can browse internet from just google the name of the setting you're looking at to get an explanation of what it does.

what Jeffy is saying (if i can translate better) is that you most likely currently have
FSB at 266 (*4=1066MHz)
CPU multiplier is 9 (*266=2400MHz)
Memory i'm guessing is 666MHz with some multiplier to get to that (since your FSB is 266 at 1:1 would be 533 and could be that's what you have)
so idea is to go FSB at 333 (that means *4=1333), leave the CPU multiplier at 9 (that would make it 3000MHz) and adjust your memory multiplier to get it back to what you have stock now
I would try in steps though, get it increased by 20MHz or so until it fails. Then play with your CPU Vcore (don't increase much, just slightly) and then try a higher frequency again. You might also have a setting in your bios called Vdroop, turn that on, it helps with voltage drop on the CPU under load.
you can also look for the exact model of your memory and see if anyone o/ced that successfully, then try to aim for those setting but don't go higher (lower is always a safer bet).
Keep in mind that you might blow something up (not literally, it won't explode or anything) so it's up to you if you want to experiment.
if you want to keep your CPU cool there's a tool that helps - it's called speedfan, it allows to set policies on fan speed based on temp thresholds, your mobo (motherboard) might also have a little program that does just that.

Front Side Bus - is the BUS connecting the CPU to Northbridge (which is the memory controller and graphics card hi-speed bus controller). there are 4 transfers per clock cycle in your case that's why the x4 multiplier

Back to playing Battlefield BC2 multiplayer...something about playing it on a 120" screen with surround sound makes it impossible to stop.... :guns:

When I have a chance -- probably be a while -- one of things I want to do is move to Video cards with HDMI ports. Going to see if I can run my second soundsystem from HDMI.
When I was using XP a couple of years back with my I7, I could run two speaker sets off the included mobo sound card -- one on a jack port and one using SPDIF. For whatever reason, though, Windows Ultimate identifies each speaker set and makes you select which one you want to use. So now I have to use one speaker set or the other rather than both simultaneously (which sounded impressive even to my old, ringing ears)
I'm already 2 years in with my I7 and it's feeling like upgrade time. Of course, I am going to need to upgrade two video cards and cooling (probably some reliable water setup). Going to need water cooling on the cpu as well as the two video cards. Not much point in having all that new video card horsepower and getting the blue screen every 20 minutes because the system can't handle the heat. And then if you have to run the CPU 4.0+ to keep from bottle-knecking the new cards, system cooling is even more mandatory
Still pissed that there's no phase change cooling that can handle CPU and video card or multiple video card cooling. And then I read that the existing phase change cooling systems just for CPUs are loud as heck. Even if it was $1000 bucks plus, phase change would be a cooling system i could probably live with on the same system for 4-5 years; if it was noisy, I'd find some way to muffle it.
Probably going to also have to trade up to a power supply with 1000-1200W (current is 650W), but don't have or expect need for some kind of Tri-SLI setup.

BC2 is a decent game. I've seen some play it 4-5 people using the same account, so they ascend the multi-player rankings in a hurry. It benefits your guy to be ranked high -- bullets seem like they bounce off the guys who are 45-50.
-

ill have to agree with that and add knifes deflect off them also.. im "only" at level 35 or so and have had all the weapon for a long time but still get cheap shoted and ripped off at times it seems.. and now that they let you put attachments on the weapons you get by leveling up (other than the shotguns) you get people sniping with the m14 which apparently shoots dead on up to 300yards and kills in 1 shoot most of the time when its long distance... and you get a guy that is constantly getting 20 kill streaks with it ...
ow and i had to go back to 800mhz for my gpu as at 820 i got artifacts in dirt 2.. lowered some settings in bc2 and it runs at a much better frame-rate.

Well with Dirt 2 finished, I had to find another game. I've started to play MGS Subsistance. This is the redone version of MGS Snake Eater that was released a while back. I got the MGS pack for $19 which included the Original MGS for the PSX, MGS Substance (Son's of Liberty) and MGS Subsistance (Snake Eater). Actually I was going to play Snake Eater but I found my case was empty! Not sure where it went but rather then look for it. (It's been years since I played it) I opened up my Essential MGS pack.
Boy, the controls are crappy. It's really a stealth game and nothing else. It's impossible to shoot on the run so if you want to evade you just need to book it. Although I'm sure you won't get a reward of some type if you do that. Aiming is very slow or super fast. You're either swinging across the whole screen or you're tapping the controller to get that precision shot over with. It's a PITA really.
When I originally played it I only got through 1/4 of the game. And since it's been so long since I've played it I'm starting over. Hopefully, it won't be as frustrating once I'm used to the controls. Oh yeah, and the PS2 looks good on the LCD screen.

Finished Farcry 2. Those roadblocks got kinda old. I found by going around them off the road or using a boat,or bus to travel you could avoid a lot of them.

Thinking about replacing my GTX 280 SSC with something new. I think it's either going to be a GTX 570 reference or a Radeon 6970 2GB. Anyone have any opinions? From what I've seen, EVGA's seem to be a bit scarce for some reason. I don't really know why though. The 570 also has a HD version which is a bit more compact but Amazon doesn't have any 'AR' cards with the Lifetime Warranty. They have a 'KR' with a three year warranty. The 6970 from Visiontek is available and ready to ship. I moved away from ATI back with the 9600LE. I didn't like the drivers and CCC program you need to install. Then got a Nvidia 7800GTX SC and never looked back. I've had a 8800GTX, and now a GTX 280 SC.
Another option, buy a 6950 and unlock it to 6970 specs for around $100 less then a 6790.

They all pretty much have HDMI. Actually I have a DVI to HDMI adapter for my current card. The problem I see is with availability. The 570 seems to be on backorder even at EVGA.
I'd like to order the card today so I can have it by next week.

Anyone looking forward to Crysis 2?
Still have the GFX dilemma. Might just go 580 instead unless someone talks me out of it.
-
How about SLI some 460's? Seems to be a little more then a reference 570 but still faster. They're about the same price as a HD6970 or $100 less then a 580.
-
Well, I did it. Didn't go with the 570's since I had to one up Moz. I order an EVGA 560 Ti. Then I ordered another.

Yeah, EVGA/Nvidia released a bunch of cards around that time. The 570 was a good deal though. I don't think there is anything faster that has that price point still. I would have bought a 570 if they were available though.
The SLI 560's are really impressive. I've installed Crysis to see how it does. Seems to run smooth with everything turned up. I put vsync back on and everything looks better since it's not tearing anymore.
Not sure what I want to play next though.

Well I've finished LA Noire. I still have a few more things to get before I get the 100% but the main story is done.
I'm not sure what's next. Portal 2, Infamous 2 or maybe Duke Nukem Forever.

Didn't play anything new lately, i'm gathering parts to upgrade my rig
got a motherboard x58 socket 1366 Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5
Corsair Dominator DD3 1600 7-7-7-20 6GB triple channel
am still fishing for a CPU and another GTX280 (i found a waterblock cheap for this card and will go SLI with my oter Hydro block GTX 280)
will prolly get i7 930 or 920 and overclock the heck out of it (4GHz is my goal which apparently is achievable easily even aircooled).
then i'll install Win 7 ultimate and get some of the newer games to work (i have a couple of new games that are both hanging/crashing in Win XP so time for an upgrade).
-
I got a free" copy of assassins creed brotherhood from a ssd purchase. started playing that and 2 days later steam had assassins creed 2 on sale so now im playing though the second one to keep the story in order (got 1 last summer for doing some work on a friends car).. between these 2 games i should be set for the summer... guess ill wait to play portal 2 for a while, or until they have a nice sale on it.

it's not hard to get 4.0Ghz out of a 920. I have mine set at 4.0 in the bios and an extra 200mhz in the EVGA OC'ed. I could probably get more but I'm happy with 4.2Ghz. Mine runs quiet with the hydro. The GFX scream when pressed and are a lot louder then the CPU/Case fans.
I'd like to get a 970 but I'll wait till their prices drop some.

i can get a 920 for $185 shipped or a 950 for $210
not sure which one to go with, $25 more for 950 that has the multiplier at 23 vs 20 on the 920, that's about the only difference I think (and the resulting speed)
still thinking which one

I'd definitely get the 950. $25 for better OC'ing. Although if you're just shooting for 4.0Ghz, there won't be much difference between the two.

i got the 950
i just need a bigger power supply now and the second GTX280, mine is 750w but going SLI i am thinking 1000w would be more appropriate if not absolutely necessary (i have 8 fans in my rig :yikes: plus the waterpump)

I bumped my CPU to 4.3Ghz just because. I could go higher but I'd need to increase the CPU voltage a little. I know it will run 4.4-5Ghz with the higher voltage. Might even be able to get 4.6Ghz. But I'm not that interested in pushing it much more.
-
Portal 2 arrived today (gotta love amazon prime). that will put assassins creed 2 on hold for a few nights at least.
-
Well, I got Portal 2 as well.
Also put my computer back to 4.2Ghz. I was getting some lockups and BSOD and didn't want to trouble shoot it so I went back to what's been stable. I think it's RAM related though.
-
finished portal 2. probably the quickest completion time from time of purchase of a game ever for me. basically had all the settings maxed out and played nicely except when you got lots of the liquid gue stuff flying around. maybe i tried to play it too fast but the game kind of annoyed me. especially in the middle when you have massive areas but can only walk in one little catwalk and have to find the 1 square your portal gun works on.... and the pre-rendered ending seen had some sub-par graphics in my opinion for pre-rendered i would think it would at-least look as good as max game settings... tried playing 1 round of the online coop but was getting extremely annoying echoing background talking noise even though the otehr player "didn't have a mic" ::), adn i unplugged mine.. will have to comeback to that latter. too much gaming not enough jeeping / wrenching (actually spent the last 2 weeks diagnosing and fixing the 1990 xj but thats another story)

Anyone on here play socom4?

Just bought a better power supply -- the latest 1200W Antec unit mostly because it'll fit my P182 case. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371043 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371043). Probably going to swap both the old 9800GTX+ video cards I have in my desktop for something newer, so the additional wattage headroom would be useful.
Frankly, my 2 year old system probably needed a power upgrade from the outset, regardless of video card swaps -- have been way too many crashes, blue-screens, unexplainable shut-downs since I put the thing together in '09. I figured I'd be upgrading things two years in in 2011, so a new power supply wasn't an unexpected purchase, though.
Need to find some new games once I get the cards in there too.

that's a lot, are you planning to run triple SLI?
i bought a 1000W coolermaster but mainly 'cause I found it cheap otherwise i would have probably gone with a 1200w like you did

Nah, just SLI. Probably overkill. I was probably too conservative with the 650W unit I started with (did use a couple of power supply calculators, though) and 1200W, now, is probably more than I'll ever use on this system (read a few people testing the the thing were finding it outputting 1700W max http://hardwareaware.com/review/hcp-1200 (http://hardwareaware.com/review/hcp-1200)).
Reading though that a couple of the newer cards in SLI will need 900W total. Then you get in to the drives, optical, memory, over-clocking, past shut-down headaches and it's kind of like: alright, alright, gotta make sure there's enough power this time
-
team fortress 2 went play for free now. crazy how much its changed since it came out... i basically stopped playing shortly after they added the craft your own stuff thing. to much new stuff for me to want to keep up with..
-
Got this new power supply hooked up. Forgot my first one was a 650W Antec unit, not Thermaltake; in the photo, it's below the 1200 and it used to be a nice fit in the silver "box." The new supply is a tight fit in a mid-size case, but it does fit ok without any interference with the cables.

Anybody playing Dirt 3?
Downloaded it off Steam a couple of days ago. It's better in some ways than Dirt 2 with the snow and rain on tracks, more realistic audio and graphic details. They chucked the X Games-type deal at the beginning -- not having to redo that probably saved them a ton of work, but it also seems like it got them out of "a ton of work" that they charged the same price for.
-
Nobody's playing Dirt 3? Jeffy, Chardrc?
Was a little down on the game at first, but the multiplayer race called "cat 'n' mouse" is an f-ing laugh-riot. You have teams and one guy on each draws the Mini Cooper which is making 4Bangerjp power. The other guys on the team get fast cars -- Audio Quattros at 600hp or whatever. Team that wins get their Cooper across first wins. So the Quattros work like blockers trying to keep the other teams cars from taking out their Cooper. It's total mayhem :pirate: .

Nope. Finished LA Noire then finished Portal 2. Screwing around with TF2 to see if I like it. I'm not sure what I'll play next though.
-
I've gotten to many new games lately (tdu2, assassins creed 2 and brotherhood, portal 2) the only one I've finished is portal 2 but haven't completed the coop. haven't finished dirt 2 and my graphics card wouldn't like 3 on my new screen. I've been playing tf2 again since last Friday, had to start over on achievements since my brother wont let me on our shared account anymore (best thing about dirt 2 is it finally got me to make a separate steam account). I'm planning on not getting anymore games until battlefield 3... Dirt 3 does sound tempting though... maybe if it goes on steam sale for ridiculously low price...
-
If you all have a 3d tv try the new red faction in 3d mode. It is pretty cool, not the greatest game out there but fun for a 3d mode. I am still wanting to try crisis 2 in 3d but heard it sucks, anyone try that yet?
-
my graphics card wouldn't like 3 on my new screen.
I got a pci express geforce 7900GT i am trying to get rid of if you are interested.

Finally got the audio working correctly with D3. They did a nice job this go around withe the engine sounds -- sounds what I'd guess is fairly "authentic" for each of the vehicles. I like the game overall better than Dirt 2.
Will probably pick up BFBC3 when its released, also.

I will be getting this release most likely as well. BFBC2 was lots of fun

In good conscience, need to upgrade my rating of Dirt 3 from "better than Dirt 2" to "best driving game I've played" (especially multiplayer and the new "disciplines"). This is whether were talking about PC, consoles , arcade, whatever. However, "F1 2011" will probably be as entertaining...

i hope they'll do a better job than F1 2010 - it lacks a lot of features not to mention the 3 button press to change the wing angle!!! otherwise is fine as far as tire physics and in the middle for the wing influence but i enjoyed it. I do hope they will have DRS and Kers in this version and better on screen display. It's missing session logging right now which sucks big time (you can't tell what your top speed and rpm or the min speed and rpm/gear) not to mention that you can't go with auto and manual shifting at the same time (i find the downshifting on auto to lack intelligence overall, i get to 6000 rpm in 2nd before it actually shifts in first. Same goes for the engine output, some gears just don't make sense, you get better times with 35kph between gears vs 30 (and i mean that in 6th and 7th).
-
Dirt 3 let's you opt for HeadCam, Manual, and settings -- this is the same as Dirt 2. And that's pretty much how I preferred to play Dirt 2 and same with Dirt 3 now.
Dirt 3, however, has a bunch of automatic stuff available under a new "Assists" category. Now you can sit there and set the "Assists" so that your car will brake automatically in to turns, run with some kind of "stability control", and back off the throttle if the wheels slip. It also lets you turn ABS on or off -- actually the one good thing about Assists.
I don't have a gripe with "Assists" or people that don't want to play headcam, manual, and track settings, but trying to find any multiplayer game of Dirt 3 (or Dirt 2 - minus "Assists") that a given "king" hasn't set to rock-bottom, anything-goes, car-drives-itself-and-probably-calls-On-Star-if-you-crash is getting kind of ridiculous.
Tonight I was like: "manual, headcam, settings...come on dudes !" But this particular "race-king" goes: "I hate headcam." :flush:
So, I play "race-king" and set it up like I want, but then a f-ing hour goes by during what I would consider prime-time on the US west coast, but nobody joins. Or if they do, they bail about 10 seconds in (as in: "Oh no, whadya mean push buttons to shift gears? And it's on headcam and there's no stability control, either!? I'm outta here!") Me: :'( then :brick: then  then
Probably going to check the Codemasters forum and see if there are any groups that regularly play on the settings was looking for.
-
decided to play dirt 2 today as i finished assassins creed 2 and brotherhood this week :wall:... but forgot my stupid windows live account name or password / the game says my account is blocked and website wont let me log in :deadhorse: .. (I know I know too much gaming. but should be getting the jeep out tomorrow since it will be nice out again :driving:)

You finally updated to something current. A friend of mine has one of those after I told him about them. I run them in SLI.

That's what I'm planning to do is pick up another and SLI them. Mines an EVGA version.
May have to RMA the first one, though, or swap it under warranty with EVGA. The 2 DVI ports on it work fine, but am not getting any audio or video through the mini-HDMI. Have combed the forums, tried everything under the sun, tried it with different HDMI cables to the adapter, different gear with HDMI ports, combed the BIOS for settings I missed, messed with the NVidia control panel. Drivers are all up to date on the card, soundcard, board.
Best I can tell its down to some fault with the mini-HDMI or bad adapter (and doubt its the adapter). Anyway, am using the card for the time-being...

Mine are EVGA as well. EVGA has the best warranty and is probably the strongest seller of the Nvidia cards.
The only problem with running SLI has to do with how the card breaths. The top card will get smothered by the bottom card so you'll see 8*C difference when there is no load and up to 11-12* under full load. If you have a board that supports 3-way then you might be able to separate them more. The problem I have is by first PCI-e is 16x while the second is 8x and the 3rd is 4x. You want to run them in the faster slots if you can. Although 8x and 16x isn't really measurable. 4x though is a bit slow.
I'm probably going to eventually go with waterblocks so I can get rid of the fans. Haven't bothered with HDMI sound. I have a SB x-fi Titanium Pro which is better then the onboard sound processors. I typically use headphones on my PC anyway. GPU fans get noisy if I'm gaming.

Noticed that kind of temperature difference with the 2 9800 GTX+ cards. Right now, I have the fan on the EVGA 560 TI card at 70% and it sort of blends in with the ambient AC noise. I'm probably going to do the same, around 70% fan speed, with a second card. Waterblocks on these aren't going to happen -- Am using a Corsair H70 setup for the CPU and a couple of Noctua fans, which are 9 blade deals that are quiet and move air pretty well; the H70 works well, better than the Tru Air cooler I had on there, but it's a long way from the real thing and the GPUs aren't going to get integrated in to any kind of H70 coolant loop...

Isn't there someone in the start up diagnostics section that controls audio? I thought I remembering seeing the HD audio info for my card in there when I was checking the diagnostics info when setting up my PC.

I been paying this Risen RPG (While i wait for my Spartan Locker to arrive )by Piranha Bytes(Developer of Gothic 1,2,3).
Its an amazing game , specially if you like Gothic type RPG's.
Also paying The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Another epic RPG.

I'm really looking forward to Diablo 3, Battlefield 3, Metal Gear Solid Rising and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Might even consider ARMA 3.
Haven't really been playing anything for a while though other then Arma 2 OA once every few weeks.

Well, I've reinstalled GRAW 2 and Rainbow Six Vegas onto my PC... I can't believe how slow the controls are/were in GRAW 2.

How many of you are going to be playing bf3 on ps3, I've seen that a lot of you are pc gamers
-
Will play BC3 on PC. Can play it at better resolution
The 560ti card runs Dirt 3 at 2560x1600 at max settings and I'm getting about 35-36 fps avg., which is playable. My old 9800 setup in SLI couldn't handle more than 1200 lines at mostly medium settings, so even the solo 560 card is a big improvement over that. Still no mini-HDMI though...

The 560 should have a HDMI port which you could get an HDMI to Mini HDMI if you really wanted one.

That's the problem though is the mini-HDMi out is not producing a signal. Not a big deal, down the road I can get EVGA to replace it.

PC only...BF3 on the 120" screen ftw!
That should be pretty great, playing or watching, with that screen size.
My old Panasonic AE1000U Projector works great, but the bulb has accumulated 1800 hours and is coming up on a swap. A new bulb "stickers" for about $400-something (Me to seller: "Hey, that's cheap...You maybe sell those bulbs in 12-packs, man? ::) ) Going to shop around and see if can get one for a bit less...

Gah! I'm playing GRAW2 again. it's been ages since I've played. It came out back in 2007. Graphics are OK but the viewdistance sucks. Not to mention spawning AI while in game. The biggest problem I have is the game keeps crashing on this one mission. Check the map, crash. Put on NVG, crash. Change weapons, crash. Move, crash... What a PITA. I never had this problem when it first came out.
Good news is, I've got more then enough GPU power. Max everything out and it doesn't even stress the system. This was one of the first games to support Agiea and has software to simulate the Aegia GPU. All Nvidia have this build into them these days. Kind of interesting to play an older game that actually supports Agiea.

pre ordered BF3 on Thursday... wont have time to play the beta with school and hunting. but excited for it to be released.

I started BF3 and it froze up on me. Tried the level over again and it froze in the same spot. So I exchanged it for another.
Just ordered Uncharted 3. Looking forward to that one!

Console or PC?
I've been racking up points and actually caught up to some people who were higher rank then I. I'm at Rank 14. Slowly getting the good stuff unlocked. I still need to do Co-op to unlock the SVD and the M39.

Ah, I'm playing on the PC. I'm still going though SP as well. I forget where I am in the game though.
MP is a lot of fun if you get with a bunch of people who work together. Like with the helo's, one flies, two gun and two repair. Only problem with the consoles is that you're limited to 24 games while PC's have 64 games. Things can get really intense at some bottlenecks with 32 on each side.
-
One of the things I noticed playing BC2 about a year ago was the guys who seemed to have hit 50 in a hurry. "One" of them had the handle, "bluedevils."
My guess was that, in that case, you had several people (perhaps Duke university students) playing under the same handle at alternative times, so rank, weapons and so on would escalate in a hurry for that one account. It got old getting killed with impunity by these guys who seemed like they'd hit 50 in a few weeks.
If u don't want to do that, you could always hire a player to drum up your numbers, so when you actually sit down to play, you are top of the heap. And if this was some kind of MMO deal, you could do like Chinese prison guards and force incarcerated persons to rack up points for your account killing hogs or whatever
-
I haven't seen many people with outrageous levels yet.. except one level 43 guy... the rest have been in the 10's and 20's which is playable against when you are still in the single digits... but ya level uppers like that are annoying as heck.
heck I don't even think Im level 50 on bc2 and I've played that quite abit since i got all the kit unlocks..

It's really what you make of it. At least in MP. Campaign is like a shoot em up ride though. You don't get much rest between gauntlets. I finished the Campaign in Hard and I still died a lot from just random shots.
I finished Co-op as well. It wasn't too hard but took a lot of time. Time wasted as all you're doing is unlocking each mission and some guns. The best one is the G3A3 though. It's slow ROF is better suited for my gameplay. The 762 rnd is harder hitting though which is really nice. I took down a pilot of a MH6 the other night with it. Then the chopper went down and I killed the guy who jumped out of the wreck. They got mad and sent 4 other guys to hunt me down. I took out two others. One was a pilot of the MH6 again. I just stood there with bullets falling around me and popped the pilot. Then it crashes a few feet ahead of me and two operators jump out and finally get me while I was reloading. I got a laugh out of it because of the absurdity of it all. I need to learn to switch weapons quicker.

I think the popularity is mainly from the on-line MP stuff. I have not done any of that. I don't have a regular time to sit down and play. Besides I have not hooked up the PS3 to be on-line. I could see how it would be fun to have your own squad of people. The drones they give you pretty much suck. They get in the way and can't shoot worth a hoot!

finished the BF3 campaign finally. wont play through it again, ending was so stupid. pissing match of if you can guess what button you are supposed to mash at the exact right time. half the time by the time the indicator telling you what to press came up you where too late. had to play the last minute of the game about 15 times to memorize the mashing sequence. just stupid, I always hated cut-scenes but now i found something worse. :rage:. at-least the online is worth playing
-
Yeah...when I finished the campaign, I was like, "seriously?"
The online is so good though. Just was on a great server for the past couple of hours. Some kick ass fire fights.
-
BF3 DLC day! A bunch of people already bought it, so I had to if I wanted to play. $15 isn't bad.
-
Felt good finally getting on and killing people last night...especially with Jeffy supplying some suppressing fire.
-
Played bf3 for a few rounds last night. Makes a good break from studying for finals.. never did get on one of those new maps though

Oh that M249 is a hose of death. Everyone wasn't moving though. I would clear a path to the next room and everyone would hand then when I rejoined they lost it again. The other guy on the team was also a friend so he was backing me up a bit so we could push harder.
I played Wake Island and it's not too bad. Not much cover theough.

I was playing Metro since my friend wanted to get some points. Metro is really good for racking up points. I haven't played much ofr the new maps. I found Wake island a bit more baron then it used to be. I barely remember playing the Beta for that. Didn't play much of BF2 other then the original maps. I wish someone would make a city where all the buildings were enter-able.
-
Didn't want to wait in queue yesterday to join you in Metro....played a bunch of Karkand....Sharqui...Gulf of Oman.
Oman is much better as there is now a central town, expanded construction site and still has the wide open outlying areas.

I still haven't played much of the new maps. My other friends seem to have wanted to start playing ARMA2/OA again. I also got Arkham City as well as Fallout 3. I haven't started FO3 but I have started Arkham City. Looks really nice on my computer. Although, I don't think the tessellation is on. I'll still play BF3 since I can play a round quickly and stop. A2/OA is a lot more involved. Takes us an hour or more to finish a good mission. Arkham City is in between.
-
the BF3 coop is realy ticking me off. on the helicopter one (second coop mission) i keep getting idiot partners that can't fly or shoot. i got almost to the end once (ground troops got to building and where leaving) but got taken out by the 2 or 3 moble AA's. but now i can't even get past the first wave of ground troops because the useless ground troops "take casualties" complete garbage. :brick:

It's actually not that hard to fly. You don't have to be great, just need to keep it level so the gunner can do his thing.

Anyone going to be playing Diablo III? I played the open beta and now I'm hooked. Actually, I knew I'd like it since I've played Diablo and Diablo II back in the day.
-
Anyone else playing Diablo III? I have two characters so far. One at Lvl 27 and the other at 19.
-
if it wasnt a pc exclusive then i would play it but unfortunately my laptop has seen better days and id rather invest my money in the heep than the comp
-
I started Max Payne 3 today on PS3. So far so good. :guns:
I like the stuff from Rockstar so far.

Finished it and now re-playing trying to get some of the missing golden gun parts found. The only thing I don't like is the cut scene's can't be skipped. Some of them are fairly long 4-5 minutes.

ArmA 2 Dayz mod is pretty popular now. I haven't played it but I do play Arma 2.
-
Been playing Farcry3. I really like it. Got about 16 hours into if so far. To me it's a modern day Red Dead.
I also got Black Ops II and Assassin's Creed III but I have not played those yet.
-
Been playing Assassin's Creed III. I'm about 43% though it. Then I have Dishonored after that. I also have Rainbow Six and Metal Gear Rising coming.
-
I've been playing far cry 3 lately. got it with my new video card. haven't been able to get into gaming in a while but having to sit inside sick has helped. I plan on getting assassins creed 3 but need to finish farcry3 first which looks like it has a lot of game play in it. what i should realy do is get in the garage and finish installing that longarm kit on the jk...
-
got my new system done (after more than 1 year into it) and been playing F1 2012, Dirt 3 and some Black Ops (which i don't like to be honest).
i'm at 3.85GHz CPU (i7 950 22 x 175), QPI at 7.9GHz (44 x 175) DDR3 1600 7-7-7-20 1T o/c to 1750MHz and 2xGTX680 SLI all over 3 x 27'' LCDs and with bezel correction resolution comes to 5948x1080 (5760x1080). Play everything full or max and doesn't miss a beat. I had it at 182MHz clock (so CPU at 4GHz and memory 1820) but had some blue screen issues and throttled down a bit, need to replace the radiator fans as the current ones have poor static pressure - i got replacements but i'm too lazy to drain the coolant just for a few MHz, might do it if i have a problem but so far no hiccups.
I might try FarCry 3 if there's a demo, if not when i'm done with the other games I might spend the money on it.
Anyone tried RFactor2 ? - i was thinking of getting it but i heard people complaining (it's still in beta but you have to pay boo), probably will wait till some solid mods come out as apparently the selection is poor right now.
-
I got "The Last Of Us" for Father's day. Started it yesterday. So far it's not a :guns: blazing sorta game. But it is fun so far.
-
I want to get that game.
I've stopped playing Assassin's Creed but I'm still playing Arma 3 Alpha. I have a crap ton of missions for it. It's $32 now but will go up $10 when the beta comes out and again when it goes Gold.
I've also played a little bit of Dont Starve. It's an Indi game and kinda fun. You can get it on Steam and on Chrome App.
-
So, it's been a while since I've updated this.
For now I've stopped playing Arma 3 since my gaming friends seemed to have disappeared.
I bought Borderlands 2 when steam had their sale. I've got a Lvl 35 Siren and a Lvl 14 Mechromancer. I wanted the Mechromancer first but didn't get the DLC until the next day and didn't bother started over. Recently I've played with some other guy's and my lvl 35 was a bit strong when everyone else was 14 and 9. So I started the new character yesterday and got it to 14 today. I actually like the mechromancer better then my Siren. It plays completely different I'm used to. For B1 I played the sniper. For B2 I figured playing the Ninja which is somewhat similar would just be more of the same.

We played both at Destination PlayStation a few weeks back; GTA is just AWESOME! You can REALLY do anything you want! The guy even has a credit card to buy stuff!!!

I'm done with battlefield I think. 3 was OK but got old fast. I'll wait for Battlefront. Borderlands is really good though. I love the co-op but wish you could have more then 4 people. It's a mix of FPS with a RPG. I got it on Steam for $36 when they had the summer sale. That's the game, Season Pass, 2 other DLC's and some random stuff.
-
Anyone playing http://warthunder.com/? It's like World of Tanks but with planes.

I decided to give Battlefield 4 a go. A few years ago I bought Battlefield BC 2 but for some reason never bought Battlefield 3 (watched a few youtube videos of BF3 game play, so got a rough idea for how BF3 looked/played).
Anyway, BF 4 looks great and looks like it has big potential. But as of the last two days, though, it's been crashing for me like crazy on multiplayer.
My system is 5 years old -- I7 920 overclocked, Windows 7 64, pair of 560ti video cards, latest nvidia driver. But, according to the BF forums, guys with newer systems and 7-series video cards are having the same crash problems on BF4 as me, even after the recent patches.
Based on the BF 4 forum and my own suspicions, I'm thinking the game is still a Dice/EA work in progress. Might demand my money back in the next few days, then repurchase the game at some point.
Undoubtedly different experiences with the PC version of BF4 at this point -- multiplayer servers do suggest hundreds of players are going at it and when I do manage to log-on I see guys that are already up there in the ranks.
But if I had to do over again, I'd have probably stayed clear of the PC-version of BF4 until some time in 2014...
-
So far I've been messing around with the "Test Range" with BF4, ok.
Driving some of the BF4 military trucks on the Test Range offers a pretty good imitation of an desert/off-road driving, imho. No low-range, lockers, articulation or anything like that, but am still kind of impressed. The M11161 ITV lets you fold down the windshield and shoot from the passenger seat.
-
Nvidia driver 331.65 has issues, apparently 314.22 is the best one but lacks support for latest games, 320 and up have had a lot of problems yet to be fixed. I play F1 2013 and has stuttering issues in SLI when playing at 5760x1080 on full (even though the min FPS is at over 40 with an a max >100 it is choppy at times), read the forums and it says to disable SLI but have not tried that yet, for now i reduced multisampling and lowered the trees and a couple of other things to get it to run smooth. Didn't try BF4 yet.
-
I am about 35% into Batman Arkham Origins; so far, I HIGHLY recommend the game (well, if you like Batman, anyway!). This one is as good a Arkham City for those that have played that one.
-
I've been playing War Thunder with some other guy's as well as trying to finish my second run though Borderlands 2. I did the first run and all of the DLC's and optional missions. Now I'm doing a clean run with no optional missions then what people call 2.5 by doing a third run with the optional missions so there are better drops.
I'm not really into twitch anymore. I'm waiting for some other friends to get into ARMA 3 which I've had for several months now. We played Arma 1 and 2 before. Other then that there aren't too many games I'm looking forward to. Maybe I'll get Assassins Creed 4. I still haven't finished 3 but so far it was good. I also have Dishonored which I haven't even played yet. I've had it for almost a year now. Need to finish Mirror's Edge as well. I keep stopping about 9/10's though the game for one reason or another.
-
I started playing Tribes Ascend earlier this year, mostly because the reviews were decent and it was free.
Game had already been out for awhile and it kind of plays like ice-hockey with guns. Seems popular with Australians for some reason.
It uses the Unreal Engine from Unreal 3. Never bought Unreal 3 but did play a lot of Unreal 2004 in '04. Tribes basically feels like a 10 year old game to me.
Currently level 46 out of 50 without coughing up dough to hi-rez to jump the ranks faster. Handle is "BobStalin."
Lot of hackers and hi-rez is clearly not pulling the money from Tribes to justify tasking anybody to regulate the game with consistency at this point. So known, hi-level players tend to congregate on the pubs and games are often stacked as a result. Still kind of fun, though

how many battles does BF4 single player has? I hate playing online (since i get killed before getting to fire a shot) but would like to play it in s/p if it is extensive enough, i remember one of the BFs only had like 2 maps for singleplayer and it sucked.

I think that's a bad reason to get BF4 then. I've heard SP Campaign is short. Even when watching the movies you can probably run through it in 3-4 hrs.
-
If you spawn at the base rather than a squad member you will have a better chance of getting to do something before during. I broke down and bquht bf4 last Friday and it has been a lot of fun so far. But it has had some lockup and crashing issues but I think that's more because I'm still on a core 2 duo and a slow hard drive...

did you go thru the s/p campaign? how long is it?
and did anyone play Crysis 3?

Anyone running an off-brand 2560x1440 Monitor? I'm thinking about getting one. I currently run two GTX 560 Ti in SLI. my current monitor is a 1440x900 and is really hard to see some thing in the distance without it looking like a dot.
-
My main monitor is a 30" Dell 2560 x 1600 60hz bought about 5 years ago. The 30"-ers Dell is selling these days are essentially the same model. Probably find one for under a grand.
If the off-brand 1440p you're looking at are high hz models, that's a different story, though.

All of the off-brands are supposed to be using a Samsung screen which is the same as the Apple Thunderbolt. They are all priced well under $500. The ones that have HDMI and Display Port cost more then the bare bones ones with only DVI, from what I've seen.
-

Currently muddling through the single-player campaign on BF4 -- that, at least, plays for me without the problems multi-player has been giving me.
Don't usually play the single-player campaigns, so don't really know about the length per se. I'm still on the first out of seven stages and have probably been at it for 4 hours. But like I said, don't usually play single-player so it's trial and error and probably particularly slow going in my case.
But have to say I'm, thus far, impressed with the graphic/details/story-work Dice put in, though.

That sounds good. The Dell 30s are Samsung screens also, iirc.

Finally started playing BF4 multiplayer. It crashes on me mid-game about every third or fourth game, it seems like. Keep getting messages that the game can only play at 1080p, so that's what I am playing at (monitor I have is good for 1600p and that's what I play everything else at, so am kind of disappointed right now)
Frankly, it appears that my 560ti cards in SLI can't handle BF4 at High and Ultra settings -- even at 1080p. Can get 60fps but the graphic settings have to be de-tuned significantly.
-
I finally got it to work for me...but only on Internet Explorer....haven't tried multiplayer yet.
Was able to get an XBoxOne, so will just get it for that as well!
-
With the Steam Sale going on, I ended up buying Skyrim and The Stanley Parable.
-
Well, I got the Monoprice 27" 2650x1440 (2K) monitor from a CyberMonday deal. It was $300. Can't really go wrong for that price. I have to say it's worth every penny and more. I'm glad I didn't go with a 1080p monitor. This thing is awesome. The only downside is that the brightness is a bit bright and it's kinda blinding if the screen has a lot of white.
-
I need to get a new (better) monitor for my PC; I use it for photo editing, and right now, I don't even have 1080 there!
By the way, I just started playing GranTurismo 6 last night (I hope I don't get in trouble for posting this, as it is released tomorrow!) on my PS3. It's really good, but I wish you could import the cars you already had in GT5... If you can, I could not figure out how yesterday!

Well, if you do your homework, one of the S. Korean 27" monitors is an excelent value. You're basically getting a screen that was rejected from Dell/Apple. These are $1000 monitors. LG makes the screens. By rejected, I mean instead of an A+ screen you get a A or A- which usually means something really minor like maybe too much light bleed or something.

I saw some 2K A types (no pixel damage or light bleed, according tot he site) for about $430, which is not bad. I am considering this... Now I just need to figure out what to tell the wive!

I'd be a little skeptical if they say there is no light bleed. IPS's all tend to bleed a bit. If you're not looking at blacks all day, you won't even notice it. My 27"'s regular price is $390. It's pretty bare bones. No onboard scaling. This means no HDMI nor Display Port. Not a big deal since I don't use them. DVI is the same quality as HDMI minus the audio. The next model up from the one I bought had HDMI, Display Port as well as speakers and a glass front panel. I didn't want the glass since it's more likely to get reflections.
-
you can get sound over DVI
-
you can get sound over DVI
Yeah but not thought a DVI cable. Typically monitors with built-in speakers will have HDBI while those that don't will only have DVI. In any case to run a 2K monitor you need DVI-D Dual-Link. I think the performance hit is about the same if I was running dual monitors.
Skyrim is a little slow when loading up a new area. I have to wait a few seconds for it to load properly. Or else I get hit with a lot of stutter and a FPS of around 17. Once it loads, it's fine but can be a slight issue when you enter a room wth enemies in it. I'm playing Skyrim in Ultra.

I did the unthinkable and got a cheap Ebay copy of Windows 8 that I then upgraded to Windows 8.1. BF4 multiplayer suddenly became playable at 1600p on medium settings with my 560ti cards...Only at about 40fps though.
BF4 itself kind of seems like BFBC2 meets Mirror's Edge -- lots of high-rise sniping, base jumping in urban environments
However, with Windows 8.1 my system ended up throwing a "bad sys config" message. Am writing this on a fresh install of Win 7. A lot of my SSD is all backed up, but I am still going to have to invest a better part of a day reinstalling a bunch of things. And then I'm back to what I was at before: Windows 8.1.
Probably going to go back to Windows 7 and give BF4 a rest despite the improved playability on 8.1, or wait for a patch that makes Windows 7 work as well with it (as was effectively advertised).
I hear EA's stock has been falling due to BF4 release problems http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/12/ea-stock-dips-as-company-struggles-to-fix-battlefield-4-issues/?comments=1&start=80 (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/12/ea-stock-dips-as-company-struggles-to-fix-battlefield-4-issues/?comments=1&start=80).

I have been trying to play BF4 with issues. When it works its fun. but after the latest update if i die in the campaign the game crashes when reloading the map. the game also crashes after about 3 or 4 multiplexer maps. i also didn't pre-order so i dont have china rising and 90% of my favorite servers are china rising now so i essentially can't play on most of the servers online unless i upgrade when the game is only a month old. a bunch of garbage if you ask me when they make the base game obsolete that fast. .
I would just not play for 2 months for them to get everything straightened out like i did for bf3 but then everyone in a tank or aircraft ends up leveled out and its damn near impossible to build up a aircraft....

Yeah, I think I was playing a lot of the "China Rising" servers, chardrc. It was all "Siege of Shanghai" and a few other maps. Think my rank was 23 after maybe 40 hours of play or something. There's guys on there already over 100 lol.
However, though, you go through the servers for PCs and add up the total players on there for any given time and you're talking probably under 200 -- this is for a new game release...

After 2-3 months you'll see a lot of people drop off for the next big title. I think EA's just way too big and they lean heavily on title names alone to sell.

The maps they added with the China Rising pack are decent. Not sure if Seige of Shanghai was one of them -- think it may have been there originally. Game is only crashing on me -- MS 8.1-version of BSOD -- about every 20th game though, but it still happens and only when playing BF4.
Any of you guys playing the PC version? ChardRC, are you on there?
-
I have been playing BF4 more now that I have settled into my new house and the game doesn't crash anymore (although it lags a bit sometimes on some servers but that could be my computer). I am on PC as "chardrobot" someone took chardrc on me :guns:

I've been playing Skyrim. It's a great game except for all the bugs. Game lags really bad when loading the world. This happens every time you go through a door. Then there's all the trigger/scripting conflicts where you can't finish one quest if it overlaps another quest. You'd think after 2 years they would have fixed it.

Add me for BF4, MajWoody1911 :driving:

I started playing Rocksmith 2014. Nothing like playing a $50 game with a $3000 controller. :wall:

I saw that one, and I am seriously considering getting it! But for now, I am playing Diablo III. Can't say it's my favorite game, but it is not that bad (and it's a lot better when you factor in that it was free).

I liked Diablo III but it was hard to find other people who wanted to play.
Rosksmith is pretty cool but can get finkey depending on the guitar. It seems to like some more then others. I was originally playing with my Gibson Les Paul Standard and it was okay but wouldn't recognize slides. I'd do a slide and could hear it in game but it would say I missed for some reason. Then it would slow it down which really sucked. At 60% it was so slow that even with a lot of sustain it would tap out before the required time.
I switched to my Gibson Les Paul Junior and it seems to like that better. It's also a whole lot lighter. I was playing for 3 hrs yesterday and did only an hour today as my wrist was killing me.

Well, if I do get it, I will probably get the one with the included guitar, as I do not have an electric guitar (I have an electro-acoustic one, but the neck bent during one of my many moves, and now it's VERY uncomfortable to play; my other one is 100% acoustic).
As for Diablo III, I have not tried it online (I am not a big online player).

I'd recommend getting something better then the boxed guitar that they sell. That's a really cheap guitar. It's an Epiphone Les Paul Special II which costs around $150. It's always recommend to spend at least $250 on a guitar. The reason being at the really low price, quality is skimped a bit and so they get issues that make them harder to play. I'd recommend getting something like a Gibson Melody Maker or Junior new or used. Or a Squier Classic Vibe. Either a Telecaster or Stratocaster. That is, if you want to have the least about of frustrations with the game and are wanting to learn to be a better player.
The biggest complaint I have with Diablo III is that you have to be online to even play single player. It caused a lot of problems when it launched because it forced everyone to login at the same time. The gameplay is fun though.
