Title: Strange electrical issue
Post by: czjeeper on December 04, 2009, 12:37:46 PM
This has happened a few times in the past and went away within a day. Now it happened again a few days ago, and has stayed.
My hardtop dome light won't turn on w/the switch (dimmer wheel), and my stereo won't turn on.
I don't have the door pin light switches.
I have checked all fuses and they are good.
The stereo is an aftermarket Alpine wired into the factory stereo harness.
What circuit has these two common?
I've checked everything I can think of.

i think the dome and courtesy light circuit is powered from the PDC in front of the battery (fuse #12 - it's 10 amp fuse on my '95YJ i think) and they are turned on by grounding the door contacts (i understand you don't have them but the wires should still be there for you to test). Did you check the fuses under the dash or the PDC (power distribution center) close to the battery? or maybe both?

I just pulled the deck, and checked the harness.
I get ign power, but no bat power.
All fuses under the dash and under the hood check out.
Deck fuse is good.
Deck ground is good.

What is this fuse looking thing in the bottom middle position?
Not sure if that is good or bad...replace or test, or is this item not at all related to my problem?

according to what i found that is "front wipers and washers"

what puzzles me is that fuse labeled as "dome" as in the '95 FSM is listed as ASD and Fuel Pump relay fuse - i will look under my dash tomorrow morning and see what the hell is labeled on my fuseblock. thanks for the pics, now i understand what this guy meant in his thread http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php/topic,7718.0.html with the dome light - i wonder if indeed on your YJ that fuse powers both the ASD/Fuel pump and the dome light. I'll let you know what's the fuse 5 label on my fuseblock

or maybe they changed the harness between 92 and 95, although i thought the electronic injection harness is the same, maybe the inside harness was different.

check your ignition switch in the column... on my xj the contacts got worn and burnt and caused some wierd problems, not quite like yours but you never know

While digging around I found this relay, and this plug.
Any ideas what they go to?

AH HA!
Got it!
In the PDC under the hood, the 10 amp mini fuse in the forward position is the culprit. The fuse is fine, but the contacts aren't very good.
This controls the circuit for all the curtesey lights inside the cab, and the stereo battery positive.
The other 10 amp mini fuse is for the horn.

from my diagrams that purple/white wire goes to the radio/cig lighter/and radio illumination

might be the culprit.. check it with a DVOM

I'll check for the plug

the wire that controls the dome lamps and radio memory (full time hot) is solid pink and #18 size

there is also a purple/white wire that runs the washer pump (which may have a relay)

and the factory fog lamp wiring is blue/white (relayed)

I'm going to say that that relay goes to some form of headlamps (maybe fog) but from pics its hard to tell check it with a DVOM

where is that white plug located.. just from looks only my guess is it might be the factory radio plug or one of the two body harness plugs (may control the dome lamp) the wire runs down the rocker by your left leg and the connector is under the dash somewhere

hope this helps electrical problems can be a real bitch

I'm an idiot.
That plug goes to my gauge panel.

that's what i said in this post, did you miss this the first time?

anyway, glad you found the problem.
nevertheless, that fuse labeled dome in the fuseblock inside is confusing, i'll let you know tomorrow what's mine saying there.

Sharpxmen, I pulled the fuse and it was good so I put it back thinking it was something else.
I had to bend the contacts a little to get positive contact.

looked at my fuseblock inside, same think - fuse 5 is labeled dome but it's actually ASD/Fuel pump relays. what the heck were they thinking?
