Post by: stan98tj on December 15, 2009, 01:48:06 PM
i know, it's a newb question. how do i check the fluid levels in my front and rear diff. its a 98 tj, 111k on the clock...stock axles, other than the fluid check should i be doing anything else to preserve the axle's inner working parts?

make sure the vehicle is leveled and take the fill plug out - put your pinky finger in there and bend it a little bit to see if you find the level of oil (you can use a steel rod that is bent also. add the required amount till the level is at the bottom of the fill hole. If you're worried you could replace the fluid, best way is to take the cover off but you could also "suck" it out with a suction pump. if you take the covers off you can also inspect the gears and check for extensive metal shavings on the bottom of the diff housing to get an idea what the wear is.
