Title: Wipers dont work!
Post by: MYSTANGT on December 21, 2009, 07:35:47 AM
Im here in NYC and we got an unusual amount of snow saturday night, which was more AWESOME!

Whats not awesome is that in the middle of this crazy snowfall my wipers stop working.

At first they slowed down and barely moved across the windshield. Then they stopped completely and I couldnt even move them by hand.

Yesterday, i got them to move but only if i forced them by hand and then they stopped working again and are now dead.

Is the motor fried? I assume its not the controls since my sprayer still works.

Anyone have pics of where the motor is located and anyone know of a good replacement? Do the XJ or YJ have the same one by any chance, or a better one for that matter....  :puzzled:

if yu are talking tj, the motor is under the cowl.. if you look about halfway down the page in the link you will see a pic.. and at the top there are instructions of how to get the cowl off.

Thanks! I found it!

Now, what is a quality replacement?

Or is the XJ or YJ one the same by any chance?

AND anyone know where the fuse is for the wiper? (although im sure thats not my issue but why not just check it)

Just get a replacement motor from Kragen/Checker's/etc...  Check their webside first to see if they have better prices there.  Usually you can same a bit by buying them online then picking them up at the store.

With the holiday season in full blast, im broke as a joke. Plus I have to save a bit more for school next semester so i am hanging onto every penny i can now.   :'(

I wont be affording a new replacement but i did score a used one shipped for $40.  :thumb:

I will pop it in the day it gets here and hopefully have the wipers back in action   :weee:

It'd be a good idea to clean and lubricate the wiper linkage while you have everything apart too.

I dusted the joints off a bit and douced them in WD-40.

I was actually wondering if that would be sufficient or should i apply some other sort of lube?

That reminds me!!!  What is that little slit in the middle under the cowl?  Mine is uncovered. Should it be covered not to let water in?

WD-40 is not a lubricant.  Grease would help BUT tends to thicken when it gets really cold.  I'd use something like Breakfree CLP.

happened to me too man. started stuttering and then they quit altogether. take the cowl off and pull the wiper motor out..should be in a sheath, be careful not to tear the rubber sheath...if it looks like its wet inside or rusty..junk the motor and go to a part store (i went to NAPAA) should cost u 80 bucks or so. i wrapped it back in the sheath makin sure it was dry and then used electrical tape to seal it in. u could prob also pull on out of a junked jeep..these things arent supposed to die like that so even if ya pull one out of a junker, should work for as long as u need it to..so long as it's in decent condition when ya pull it out.

Thanks!

I did exactly that actually. I found a used piece (nice and clean unlike my rusty POS). I sprayed some lithium grease on the wiper assembly, installed the new motor onto it, popped it all back in and im back in business!

They work great right now!

+ i rain-x'ed the windows the day prior so its all tip-top shape

did you put it back in the sheath or leave it open? i wondered if i actually needed the sheath anymore, but i didnt take any chances and i dried out the sheath and popped the new motor in it and used electrical tape to kinda seal it in.
