Had nothing better to do today so I went to Pick N Pull and finally got me a Taurus fan
I saw the way Jeffy wired it in this thread http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php/topic,3781.0.html and was simply going to do this for the time being. I stopped at Kragen to find a 40A relay and came across this kit...

It's only $35 in the store too, and comes with everything I'd need I guess? Seems relatively easy to hook up. If this should work, I'll go pick it up and git 'er done this weekend :pirate:

So are you close to the NV border? Know of any good spots to start taking my YJ out to play once I get my lift?

Hmm... this link isn't working for me.

when you get there just type in 3467 in the search part box - it's the hayden automotive thru fins adjustable fan switch.

Bammer- I lived in south lake at the time that I registered here but have since moved back to the bay area. But there's lots of short/fun trails in the area
But will this kit work? It's just a universal kit with w relay, temp probe, thermostat, and fuse/wiring. If it will work I'm going to pick it up tomorrow morning and put it in

only for the low speed from my understanding (which is what you would use the Taurus fan at anyway). if you want the high speed then you will need to cascade another relay (rated for higher amperage)

That's what my friend was saying, that if I ever wanted to use the high speed I could just run a different relay. And until I upgrade my alternator I won't worry about the high speed.

i think you'll have to use an external relay (not just replacing the relay into the existing socket) - i bought the same unit just with the thread in instead of the push in probe/sender - the socket and wiring are rated for 40 amps, it's safer to get the command wires off the socket and have an external relay with appropriate wiring rather - that way you don't risk melting the socket or overheating the unit either (not to mention melting the wires).

Even on low, you'll get a spike and power draw that is noticeable enough to disrupt the idle.
-
I can run mine on low (override the temp controller) and even in low, it has more than enough power to cool down a 2.5L, so I would not even bother to wire the high side of the fan...

Yes, they are strong enough to blow leaves, spiders and even small children and pets from under the Jeep.

Finally got around to installing and hooking it up today. I haven't driven past 45 yet but I definitely noticed a difference. Seems to start just a little quicker and seems much smoother when cruising around the backroads. The $35 relay kit from Kragen worked like a charm, I've got it set to come on around 170-175* right now. I've got about an hour drive to do tonight to go hang out with a friend so that will be a great test run for it

Picked up my Taurus fan from a buddy today...he grabbed a couple of extra when he bought one for his LS1 TJ. $18.

It definitely seemed to make a difference on the drive last night, it seems quieter and runs noticeably smoother at cruising speeds. I think I'll set the thermostat to turn it on around 190 for now, just so it saves my alternator a little work until I upgrade it. But it was definitely worth it and an incredibly easy swap

Why do some other sites say to use a 75 or 80 amp relay?? I want to run out now at lunch and pick up the stuff so I can swap this out this weekend. I would like to add an on/off switch in the cab as well so I can shut it off for water crossings.

i think that's for high speed. i didn't use the Taurus but other guys here are saying that the 40amp is sufficient for the low speed.

I'm lame...Jeffy said it right in his write-up...
So...I'm looking to wire it up...but also have a cutoff switch in the cab....there are a million write-ups for this mod.
Guess I'll hit NAPA tomorrow as CarQuest nearby didn't have an adjustable thermometric switch.

there was a thread in which i posted some diagrams with the cutoff switch but it also had an override on relay - let me know if you can't find it and i can post them again.

If I wanted to add an override switch for mine, would it best best to hook it into the hot lead from the battery or the keyed ignition wire?
And Mozman- if you find the Hayden kit or something similar, it's super easy to install. No different than wiring up a stereo really
-
I just went ahead and ordered the DC Control 2-speed kit. Once I get that and get it hooked up, I'll figure out the toggle switch for inside the cab....should just be able to interrupt the 12v supply wire with a switch and relay.

Key +12v unless you like fires. You don't run high amp loads through the dash.
-
Since the battery power is going through the relay to the fan, can't I just run a switch directly into that same relay?? Like i probably did for my KC Hilighters??

yes, but what jeffy was saying is to put the switch on the solenoid side and not on the high current side of the relay (the 12v that controls the relay and not the 12v feed that powers the fan). the reason is that you will need a switch rated at 40 amps in that case and really there's no reason for having it on that part of the circuit (you will use switched 12v anyway for the control/command side of the relay)
-
Yep..."30" part of relay to battery (with fuse in between)
"86" side to switch with a ground coming off the switch and a supply line coming from a keyed source so the fan is off when I turn the ignition off.
Other side of relay ( "85?") to a thermostat
"87" to low level fan wire.

Actually...scratch that...the DC Control unit will take care of 90% of this...I just need to run the switch between their blue and/or yellow wires...sending them a note to ask what the best way is....

That would be yellow as blue is for AC.

Just wondering.... Wouldn't the Taurus have a usable relay that could be pulled along with the fan?

it probably has - but you need to know where it is and still need the thermocouple and harness (in case is not electronic).

Thanks. Sounds like the Hayden kit is good way to do it with no hassle.
