A friend of mine's 91 YJ 4ltr's belt came off - the tensioner did not loosen up from what we can tell - we did replace the belt 2 months ago - but what else could have caused the belt to just come off? The belt is still perfect, no tears or anything. From what what he said all the pulleys are ok, but I think maybe one of them is going bad - his check engine light is on once and a while - but other than that the jeep runs good.
any ideas.

The belt was too loose or something is bent, damaged or not aligned.

X2 my buddys YJ with a 4.2L kept throwing belts because one of his pully's was bent or along those lines...

cool - I'll check the pullys when i get over there tonight. From what he told me it sounded like the water pump at first - which would make sense to me.
thanks - I honestly never heard of anyone ever just throwing a belt.

If there is a mis-alignment, the belt will walk off. IIRC, the water pump's pulley is smooth so if teh bearings went and it drooped the belt could have easily walked off if it.
