Title: Broken body mount for drivers seat belt
Post by: Darteres on March 26, 2010, 06:40:08 PM
Well crud.  I managed to break the body mount for the bolt that holds the bottom of the drivers side seat belt.  Is there any easy way to get to the back side of the bolt so I could grab the mount with some pliers and get that bolt off.  I can't fit an angle grinder in there to grind off the head of the bolt without cutting up the seat belt housing.  After I get the bolt out, I assume my only option for repair is to have a new mount welded in?  Jeep is a 95 Rio Grande.

I think those are all accessible from under the body.

Well, I got it taken care of.  I cut a 1in x 3in tab immediately under the bolt, bent it out the way and cut the bolt with a reciprocating saw and replaced the whole thing with a grade 8 bolt/washer/nut set.  Gonna keep my eye on it for a few days and then tack the tab back in place.  I wasn't able to find any easy access, but I was shocked by the amount of rusty stuff that was hanging around in there...

Oh the hump, not the bolt that holds the seat belt.  Yeah, cut, fold, replace then weld.  That's you're only choice.

Did you hit the parts with paint before sealing it up?

Not yet.  I just folded the metal back in place for now.  I'll hit it with some paint before I seal it all back up.  Right now I'm just glad to be able to driver her again!

He had to replace the body mount under the seat belt, from what I understand.  The belts them selves use bolts from above and pass through the floor to reinforced plates.  There is usually underbody sealant on the ends of the bolts so they don't come out easily.

So blast them with PB Blaster, and then use heat to get them out?

If they went thick then you'll have to pick it off.  Otherwise it shouldn't be bad.  The undercoating is actual recycled paint from the paint booths mixed in with some other stuff.  It's not like the windshield brackets where it's buried in it.
