So - how big of a battery do I need? my little battery bogs down the entire engine - I'm hoping not to have to shell out $220 for an optima.
i have a stock alternator also.
the only other electronics that are on when the winch is in use is the CB normally.
Not sure what else you need to know - any opinions and help would be great!
-
You know, you can get a Red Top for around $100.
What jeep do you have? That will give us an idea of what the stock alternator is.
-
94YJ 2.5 high output.

Well, I would recommend getting a higher output alternator as the stock one is probably around 65A. If you have the HD package it could be 90A but I forget if that package was a 4.0L exclusive or not. I don't believe it was though. You'll have to check your alternator ID tag and see what it is.
You can get by with just upgrading the battery but you'll have to watch your voltage as you use the winch. Winches are hungry and take a lot of amps to power them. Short pulls shouldn't be an issue though.
-
so a high output alternator, means bigger surp belt also, and a battery with high cranking amps.
But for the short term a high crank battery will do me ok???

No, a high amp alternator does not change anything other then the output of the alternator. (see FAQ)
If you watch your Voltage meter and keep your engine running faster then idle, you should be OK for short pulls. This means pulling then letting the alternator charge the battery back up. For most situations, short pulls are all you'll really need.
-
I prefer a yellow top for heavy winching. The one in my jeep is about 8 years old now and in its second jeep.
-
go with a deep cycle like the others posted yellow/red top it recuperates much quicker and won't die as fast!!
I have two and I'm about to put in a battery isolator!!
-
arent some of those optimas kinda like a marine battery where you shouldnt have them always being charged by an alt?

What kind of marine battery can't you have being charged all the time - something you run a trolling motor off of?
The Yellowtop starting batteries are a deep cycle battery designed for automotive use. Most of the Blue tops are similiar but carry the coast guard rating that is required for marine use.

Ok your not being clear. In the previous post you said I needed a high output alternator, now you say no? A high output alternator only puts out faster - explain please.
I understand the idle - but I'm trying to figure out a eco (being $$) friendly way to achieve a reasonable charge output while making the battery last.
-
he was trying to say that the higher output alternator wont require a bigger surp belt.. its a simple bolt on so no modification needed. but it will have a higher output making it better for high power load situations like using a winch.
-
really, the same size belt - interesting, that makes it easier.
thanks for the explanation.
from what everyone is telling me an optima is still the way to go - I see the dust coming out of my wallet already! :'(
-
BTW - who is trying to sell you an Optima for $220? Even a yellowtop sells for under $175, Red tops are more like $150
-

ya, was under the assumption that not all marine bats are the same, have always let them die or get real low before recharge (usually 4 fishing trips)
I guess somebody told me wrong about the optimas(never really checked into it much)thought you had to run isolaters and all that so they wouldnt be constantly recharged and kill the long term life
-
Auto Zone, Advanced Auto - I could probably get it cheaper at the battery store down the road but they close at 5:30. I work till 6 so thats out of the question.
Where do you get it for 175?
-
thats the second time I have quoted myself :spam:

Optimas website sells yellows for $199 before tax and shipping.

Off Amazon or ebay. Nice thing about Optimas is that you can ship them UPS.
Here's a yellowtop D-34/78, which is what I run in my jeep $183 shipped

Another that is up for bid a little cheaper

Through Amazon you can usually get a free shipping deal if you wait a bit. Or use Bing search and get cashback from some vendors.

i have a 94 2.5 and run a stock alt (would have to look at amperage) and a red top with no problems winching. if im not mistaken the standard auto parts store alts for the and is the same thing in the yj s with just a different regulator on it so you may be able to use a 4.0 stock alt if you do some research. im not sure who told me that but i remeber someone saying it before so maybe some research could yield a cheap solution

ALL Optima batteries are Starter batteries.

You need to check the FAQ.

Hmm, they did jump up in price didn't they! That sucks, I remember being able to get them for $99. If they're that expensive then I'd probably go with a yellow. My Red Top is from '98 and still going strong.
BTW: if you go with a high CCA battery, you'll notice the started coming to life with each startup.

Used to be you could buy the "Blems" really cheap on ebay too. And they were not really Blems, they were the ones that Optima would pull off the line for testing.
-
i bought a red top from walmart for $150 couple of years back (maybe it was a sale but can't remember), now they have them here for $198 canadian dollars - should be cheaper in US (although is it close to par now, but usually everything is 20 to 30% cheaper there when you do the conversion).
-
Costco had them for $99 a few years ago.
Personally I like the Odessey batteries. But any dry/gell cell is going to be better than a wet battery.

My wife use to work for the company that makes odessey batteries - they are really good batteries! but expensive - the Die Hard Patinum is a repackaged odessey. $189 at sears and the yellow is about the same so all and all I'll probably go with the die hard, "just because im a snob" - no really I know the company personally and didnt realize that they repackaged the batteries.

I just shelled out $285 for a yellow top... Of course, I bought it in Costa Rica, so that makes it cheap! That's what I get for cheaping out and not buying it while I was in Miami!

Chucks discount pricing not valid in Costa Rica, Narnia or Pandora. :wall:

The redtop is not a deep-cycle battery. From what I've seen on the web, results vary greatly with the lifespan of most redtops. The Deep-cycles seem to fair much better. I went with a bluetop for my jeep, it's a deepcycle/starting battery similar to the yellowtop with the addition of stainless threaded top posts along with the standard posts.

The older U800 or is it 800U's are better then the new ones. The 800's are slightly bigger and have more of a 6-pack look to them then the newer square ones.
