ok do now that i saved up some money i need some serious opinions on the modifications i want to do on my jeep. I was considering on running 31inch tires due to i commute alot every day and 31 are inexpensive. My question for all you fantastic fourbanger jeepers out there is what kind of lift do you recommend me getting? i like the look of tires having lots of clearance but dont want to do any driveline modifications period. 1inch body lift already installed looks like a yj with heavy duty leafspring package. the jeep is a 90 yj non powersteering no airconditioning soft top.

I have a 2" lift and 31x10.5 A/T's on mine. You can tell it's lifted and I have plenty of clearance off-road, but there doesn't seem to be much fender clearance from afar. Here's a couple pictures of my YJ from slightly different angles for you to compare to what you're looking for.

If you look closely you can see where my tires have rubbed my fender flares a little when I've been off-roading (they're deformed in places.) You might want to consider TJ flares or wider aftermarket flares if you go with a 2" lift or stay with the 1" lift you've got. Still, I get no tires rubbing on metal even when I'm at high flex. My YJ doesn't flex as good as some but it's not bad either.
Also, keep in mind, if you're running the 4-banger/5-spd and you go to 31's on stock gears, you'll top out at about 70mph in 5th gear on a good, flat highway. And that's a conservative estimate, many people say 65mph. With the mods in my sig I can get her up to about 75mph in 5th with a tail wind on flat road, ~70mph otherwise. On a slight incline I have to shift down to 4th to maintain 65mph. On steep inclines I've had to go as low as 3rd gear to maintain speed (~50mph.) Just something to consider.

i have 31's on my 1990 yj.. with 2.5inch lift bds springs and .75inch lift shackles. with the sway bar disconnected offroad in realy flexy situations the tire will hit the fender flare which could be fixed my lengthening bump-stops, tj flares, or not flexing that much..
as a side note going with the 2.5inch lift required a 1 inch transfer-case lowering to avoid drive-line vibrations (or you could do a SYO which you said you don't want to do).

Well only reason why I am avoiding any real driveline modifications is because of budget. I'm simply just trying to calculate how much I'm going to spend. I could get a SYE kit but currently not at this time. The rige with a 2.5 inch lift looks pretty kewl i like the look of alot of fender clearance. worse comes to worse ill just take the fender flares off if i plan on flexing the suspension. i would say i would offroad 2 times a month on Light trails. any real sticky or tight trails i got a 4x4 quad to mess around on. besides the fact now i cant get it running..
if you only do light trails get a t-case lowering kit instead - it's easier to install and lot cheaper (you can even make your own).

my lift kit came with the lowering kit.. they are just a 1 inch spacer with longer bolts and a semicircular washer..

transfer case lowering kit.. if you looks at my pics you can see there is a gap between the frame and the transfer case skid / support. it helps drive-line angles by lowering the transfer case and pointing it down towards the axle.

you have a YJ, i got a new one for sale if you're interested (came with my lift but i don't need it). it's listed in the garage sale somewhere.

i would go with a 2-3 inch lift, tc lowering kits are fine but i didnt need one at that height, actually with a 1 inch bl you could prob just put on some confer shackles and 31 would fit. then you keep ur flexy worn out springs. if it was me i would put on the shackles and some discos, remove the track bars and have at it

I did something similar - longer shackles, 1"BL, and I trimmed the flares - but I have 33MTs as of a week ago - I did run 31MTs, and if you stick with 31x1050 and you will be fine.
