Does anyone have a sound clip of how our 4 bangers sound without a muffler?
I am VERY tempted to get a straight pipe welded in its place and leave the cats in place. :weee:
Anyone done this before?
And any issues that this may bring?

I can't imagine how horrible that would sound. It's bad enough with a flowmaster.
Issues? Being beaten to death by your neighbors would be the most immediate, followed by deafness from the rice like screaming of the 4 banger.

LMAO ^^^
The reason i keep thinking it is that my muffler is rusting threw and a week or so i go i was on the light when some dude pulled up in a 4 banger TJ that sounded pretty good. Just a little throatier than stock so i asked him what muffler he has and he told me that he just has a straight pipe in there until he gets a header/exhaust combo that he is saving to get.
I couldnt really get under to verify anything nor did i drive it...i literally heard it standing at the light and him pulling away and driving for the next 2 blocks that we were side by side....it sounded great. Sounded just a hair louder than stock and had a nice tone to it :thumb:
So it really got me thinking....but i wanted to verify before i went ahead and did it

magnaflow has a glass pack stainless that is pretty much straight thru, i saw it on a shelf and seemed the same dimensions as the Jeep one. not sure about the sound, would prolly be loud

It sounds like a honda civic with a fart tube on the back, I started mine up when i was changing exhaust and it didnt care for it, it was way to loud. I agree with oldjeep, I cant wait to get the flowmaster off mine and replace it with something a lil bit quieter

I was changing my cat back (the Gibson one was all damaged when I blew out the cat), and the shop said they could get the Borla and change it. Turned out they could not get it (they were giving me some cheapola cat back and were saying it was a Borla), and I had a business trip, so I picked up the Jeep and drove it to the office parking lot (5 miuntes away). I then had to wait for the Borla to arrive and take it to another shot to get it installed. The thing is LOUD, and not in a cool way... I was afraid of getting pulled over because of the noise, even though I was being VERY gentle on the throttle to keep the noise down.

It's worse! I've started up my Jeep with just the down pipe and it pops and cracks all the time. Not to mention, it's very loud. Even with the just cat on there, it's still pretty loud and cracks and pops.
BTW: my Flowmaster broke off at the output weld around the case. POS that I should have never had installed.
-
I got mine years ago back in high school cause at the time I thought they were cool and now I cant stand it. Buddy of mine has Magnaflow on his new Jeep and another one has it on his truck so im thinking about doing that one maybe
-
I have a spintech and its LOUD more than I wanted. But very well made...
I'd never go o pen pipe you'd be over 100db

open is way to loud and loose all the back pressure. so you gonna look like a ricer and when you take of you will be loud as heck but still slower then anybody else haha.
i love my flowmaster 40 series with a cat

I had some problems with the stock cat/muffler set-up. I pulled it off on day after work and the thing was f'n LOUD! I drove it home with my license and insurance in my lap just waiting to get puled over. I eventually put a cherry bomb on it, but I think it is still a little loud.
-
I cant imagine the drone the driver would have to put up with driving. My jeeps PO installed a dynomax muffler a year ago and I cant stand the drone from that on the highway, though it doesn't sound bad in the passenger seat or from others outside the jeeps prospective. I am waiting on a walker quiteflow to show up.
-
really loud. not going to say it will sound like a ricer but it's F*$#% loud!!
I have a high flow cherry bomb vortex muffler still fairly loud!!
-
it is the funniest thing you could ever hear out of a jeep, i had to put a muffler and tail pipe on my 2.5 and cut the old rust one out...and kinda had to drive it for a day to hear what it sounds like.....its a mix between a half blown up cummins 4bt and a screamin toyota haha
-
I don't know about cuttin the muffler and leaving the cat but the PO cut the cat off and left the stock muffler on my jeep and its a little louder than stock but has a helluva better note to it so im just gonna leave it the way it is. But I live in a small town in Texas where they dont do emissions checks. :beers:
-
I have a dynomax cat back system on mine and the drone will get to you. It is not holding up great either. It already is rusting though. It might be replaced with something else soon.
-
Speaking of droning. When I had my Jacobs ignition, I'd get a awful drone when I held the throttle at 3500-4000RPM and it would resonate inside the Jeep. When I went with the PD Firepower it stopped. The engine smoothed out over the whole RPM range.
-
that's one thing the vortex muffler seemed to eliminate was the highway drone you can hear it cause it's louder then stock but not annoying hard on the ears drone. it's only loud if you are hard on it and revving it out. idle and low rpm is fine.
and I"m running a pacesetter header and fake cat

I had a cherry bomb on my s-10 4cyc years ago. Practically no muffler. For one, everyone thought I was going to race them. Two, I agree the sounds gets on your nerves. Lastly, I seemed to get pulled over more often even when I was driving sainly.

the typical red cherry bomb? mine is a actually muffler not the red one but it's still very free flowing but does a much better job then the red one

How loud is the Cherry bomb muffler? It looks like a regular muffler right? Not the red straight thru glass pack.

it's straight thru and louder than a full size glass pack.

I was thinking of the Pro or Turbo. http://www.cherrybomb.com/products/
I now realize he was talking of the glasspack, straight thru design.
-
Funny thing is the Borla is practically straight through as well. My old one had the centered output so you could see right through it. The new one, like my original is offset but you can still see light. They both sounded the same.

It was the standard $15 dollar glass pack from PepBoys...

this is mine
I more picked it up because it is a sold case muffler and wouldn't fall apart like the aluminum stock ones would after 6months to a year. this one has been on for a while now and has taking a huge beating!! got it more for durability vs quiet but I actually like the sound it made
it's got a good sound but no drone at highway speeds.
has a nice sound but can get loud when your reving it out! but nothing near like the glass pack. I have had lots of good complements on how my jeep sounds most think it's a v8. we had guys up from London and I went to put in washer fluid and he ran to see what motor I had and was puzzled it was a 4cld lol I then told him I have the big intake and header and high flow exhaust. and all they can say is wow it sounds great I was sure you had a small V8 in it!!
the glass pack more like running nothing but a resonator/ spark arrester !!!

is it stainless? how much and where did you buy it from? thanks in advance.
btw, anyone recommending a high flow cat that is CARB/Smog approved or that will pass emissions?

Magnaflow/Car-Sound. It costs $200 though. $100 more then the 49-state. I have to buy one soon so I can smog my Jeep.

You can get them a lot cheaper off ebay. I paid under $50 for my 49 state version. Looks like the CARB legal part is 39005 (universal fit) $144

Direct-fit makes it a whole lot easier to install. Just bolts on. No having to cut or weld which makes it easy to repair offroad as well.

I'm running a TJ downpipe and have 7" more exhaust than most 2.5L so the stock stuff doesn't fit anyways.

I just swapped a Thrush with the front missing for a $25 Autozone muffler and love how much quieter it is! The 4banger was never meant to sound "mean" and never will. Spare your neighbors the trouble of doing it for you and go ahead and buy a quiet muff.
