Title: Jeep stalling help!
Post by: gomi on April 09, 2010, 10:26:26 PM
Hey guys, I am having a bit of a problem. My jeep has stalled on me twice in the last few days, both times while I was at a light. Each time I noticed that the preset memory and time on my radio was erased, so I think it may be an electrical problem of some sort. My battery is 2 yrs old, I have an electric fan conversion, and a stock alternator. I am wondering if the electric fan kicking in may somehow be causing the problem. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Please help.

check the battery ground to the body/motor. check the battery terminals as well to make sure you get good contact, but ground is more likely i think.

What bothers me is that the Jeep is stalling out.  If the battery was the issue then Jeep should have problems starting but once running it should be OK as it will run off the alternator.  Maybe sure your volt meter says around 13.5-14.3v once the Jeep starts up.  It should read 12v when the engine isn't running.

There should be a ground strap from the engine to the body (on the firewall)...

you're right, it shouldn't stall even if you disconnect the battery (the alternator should provide the 12v).

hmm, crap. Not sure what to look for. Cables seem ok!

Check for any Error codes.  You might also try reseating the harness into the PCM.

When it stalls out do the gauges stop working as well?  You might also want to check the Power Distribution box next to the battery to make sure the power cables are OK.

It does sound like a loose (open-circuit) connection someplace.  If the stereo is resetting then it had to be a major connection.

I just experienced the same problem and it turned out to be the TPS. I have an automatic and it would stall in drive at a stop light. Trying cleaning out your intake and Throttle Bottle before replacing it. Check the CPS as well

It's not just stalling though, it's shutting off all power.

I had the same problem; dead alternator was the cause.

Check your alternator/main ignition fuses. They could be loose or something.

You could always bring it to autozone and have them test the alternator to see if it's shot or not. when mine crapped out i had the typical symptoms..voltage read nothing, dash lights dimmed (cant remember if there was a check engine light or not) and then the jeep would rev real high when i would start it-i dont know if it did that to try and charge the battery- either way, i went to autozone and had em check it and they confirmed it was shot. Id take it there to see if it's the alternator or not.

Er, this post was incorrect, sorry. I meant to say that the PCM was the cause. The voltage regulator on the PCM failed and caused symptoms similar to a dead alternator. I replaced both the PCM and the alternator and all was well again. It's something else to check if nothing else fixes it.
