Title: Engine Swap for V8
Post by: matmastin on April 11, 2010, 03:38:41 AM
I have just started seriously considering swapping my 4 cylinder for a V8. How much can I realistically expect to spend for the engine and labor to have it installed? In addition to the engine, what additional parts are going to need to be replaced to make it work?(transmission, radiator, axles...)?

There are shops that will do a complete swap around here for around $14,000.  I'd say that's about reasonable considering how much labor is involved.  That's with a modern EFI engine and not some old carbureted 350.

As a minimum, you'll need:

Complete engine
custom exhaust
muffler(s)
catalytic converter(s)
pre-catalytic converter(s)
custom Engine harness
Computer
custom engine mounts
transmission
custom transmission mounts
possibly adapters for either engine/transmission or transmission/transfer case
radiator
transfer case input shaft
new tachometer
possibly evap canister
...

Beefy axles too. The stock ones that came with the Jeep are not even close to being strong enough!
Driveshafts will need to be made too.

Well, I was leaving out any extras and only concentrating on what would make the Jeep driveable again.  But yes, he would want to do at minimum a rear axle swap and think about a front one as well.
