I have an MTS 0065 gas tank for the YJ. I bought it to use it with a Kilby gas tank skid plate but it did not fit so I ended up repairing the original gas tank. I recently got a gas tank cap that actually holds pressure and now my repair is leaking (I'm running with the gas cap really loose for now). So my question is: Does anyone know firsthand of a heavy duty skid plate that will work with the MTS 0065 gas tank?
Thanks

Never heard of it. Got a link?

Here is a link:

4WD Hardware is also selling it now. It may be the only aftermarket poly 20 gallon YJ tank available (Gen Right has aluminum tanks). I'm looking into getting a used stock tank but it might cost about the same to get another skid plate that works with the MTS.

Looks a lot like a TJ tank maybe you could get an old TJ skid and see if you can make that fit.

The bottom angles are different so it won't fit in a snug fitting skid plate although it fits fine in a stock skid.
Thanks for the offer but I think it would be pretty hard for me to make it work.

Well, I won a stock YJ tank on eBay for $112 so it wasn't too bad, much cheaper than a new skid. Now I just have to get it down here and install it.
Thanks

Thanks. Actually it seems these tanks are fairly easy to find on eBay. For example, there was one "buy it now" for $100 plus $30 shipping as well as another two at auction.

Some additional information (not personally tested): justgastanks.com told me in an email that the 0065 MTS tank fits in the Rugged Ridge (Omix Ada) heavy duty diff. They said a customer of theirs bought both and it worked.

Just an update:
Got the eBay tank installed, no leaks so far, but it does not pressurize. The Jeep runs fine though. I guess I'll wait to see if any gas leaks out next time the Jeep gets tilted on a trail and then look into getting new hoses, breather valves, valve seats, gaskets, etc. This just goes on and on! :brick:

what do you mean it won't pressurize? i think it would always release in the evap canister (from what i understand)

Maybe I should learn more about this.
When I put a new gas cap on the old tank, it would pressurize. When the gas cap started being removed I could hear gas escaping, I figured this was the normal behavior. Now, with the new tank, when I remove the gas cap, no sound is heard.
So that pressurization with the old tank was not normal?

i never heard gas escaping from the tank. I know the cap has a one way valve, and is meant to not release vapors thru there, I always thought that's how the evap canister would work - now that you mention it could be that I am wrong and should pressurize and release when the engine is running - so don't take my word for it, maybe mine was not working properly.

I checked a bit on the internet and it seems it can pressurize a bit but not as much as I was seeing because as you said, it should vent to the charcoal canister. It seems excess pressure can be caused by a pinched hose from the tank to the charcoal can or by a clogged charcoal can.
Maybe I could have just fixed that and avoided buying another tank. On the other hand, the previous tank was repaired and probably would have leaked eventually.
