Title: Shifter Boots
Post by: melbill on May 06, 2010, 03:03:41 PM: How do I remove the shifter boots? I am trying to remove them so I can remove the covers under them. I am herculining the bed and want to do as good a job as possible. I have a '95 YJ, manual, with the stock trany and transfer case. Thanks for any help.

Post by: sharpxmen on May 06, 2010, 04:07:13 PM: i broke the thread on my shifters when trying to remove the knobs. But what Jeffy said to remove them, top ones are just tucked under the carpet, the ones under have a metal rim that is held in to the floor with screws.

The shifter knobs are on pretty tight but unless the boots are going to be replaced, just slide then up the shifter rod while you herculine.

mine is also a '95 but i might have changed that myself a while back and don't remember, i thought the top one was only under the carpet but i guess not.

Post by: Bounty Hunter on May 07, 2010, 04:33:28 AM: Pull the rubber boot back slightly at the base and you will see the screws attaching the metal base of the boots to the floor.

Look for jam nuts on the shifter knobs, loosen them before trying to unscrew the knobs.

Post by: melbill on May 08, 2010, 06:03:55 AM: I can get the knobs off, I am having trouble where the top of the boot meets the shaft. It seems to be fused there. I cant tell if it is a nut with paint and a sealer over it, or something welded it. I don't want to cut into it without an idea of what I am doing. I have all the screws and bolts removed from the bottom 2 pieces (plates?) I am not sure what to call them; the ones that cover the hole over the transmission and transfer case.

Post by: Jeffy on May 08, 2010, 11:54:16 AM: The boot shouldn't be stuck to the shaft. Push down on it and it will probably break free. It should move freely on the shifter.
