Title: YJ Dana 30 locker question
Post by: AGUHR on May 16, 2010, 07:52:27 PM
Anyone run a locker in their Dana 30 with the disconnect on the passanger side? I'm curious if they've had any issues with the axle breaking or the disconnect breaking? Should I just hedge my bet and put a solid axle in or is the disconnect strong enough? I run it kinda hard.

thanks.

I have run mine with both the disconnect and with a one piece in there and have only had an issue with it once playing on rocks with 35's and a heavy right foot.  I think what happened was the ujoint failed and then after it went, it pulled the ball joints apart so nothing to major.  If they would have had some spare ball joints at the badlands shop I would have had it fixed within an hour or so

The disconnect is not inherently week, and can be used to your benefit when using a locker or, as in my case, a lincoln locker or spool.  I ran for years with the disconnect and a lincoln locker, 32" swampers and no problems.  I currently run a D44 with a disconnect and a spool, with 36" swampers, again no problems.

Spool with disconnect... I don't know why I hadn't thought of doing that.  You still run the vacuum disconnect or the cable kit?  Any problems if you flat land tow?

Thanks,

Cool, good to hear. I'm running 33 KM2's, Sounds like I'll keep the cable lock, to me it sounds like a good idea since it would work like a lockout hub on the pass side so the aussie would not turn the pass side unless I wanted it to.  Thanks for the imput if anyone else has ay history of a locker with the disconnect axle it would be good to hear your thoughts as well.

Thanks,
I ran a manual vacuum switch for years, pulled it from a SJ with Quadratrac.  Simple vacuum switch to install, one input for manifold vacuum and 2 outputs to the front axle.  I now run a cable.

No problems when flat towing, just make sure the front driveshaft is balanced as it will be turning all the time.

Hey Cody - I've got an aussie sitting on my bench its going in on Saturday- just wanted to make sure I didn't need to get a solid axle and the disconnect would hold up to the hammering I'm going to put on it.

it will what? - break on me? or hold up to Ocala? just to make sure I've got you straight. I have the cable not the vac, the vac broke on me long ago. oh, and should I replace it with a TJ axle? or what axle should I use - thanks.

it will hold upp.  and the only reason i went straight to a TJ shaft is because the cable lock i have seen  not work.  and Tj shaft was cheaper for mee.
