Title: Towing another car
Post by: Tsd on July 21, 2010, 04:25:11 PM
I need to pick up an old mercedes car, according to my calculations, it weights between 1900 and 2100 pounds. Distance is 220 miles, all highway.

I can rent two tipes of trailers, this type:

Or this type:

Can I do it in my 4banger?

Thanks in advance!
Thomas

No. I won't take the chance in traffic or hills. Got any friends with bigger trucks?

your max is 2000lbs.  If there is no other way and you decide to risk it the small white trailer would be your best choice of the two.  you WILL have too much tongue weight with the yellow one.  plus you will add about 700lbs+ for the yellow trailer.  watch you temps on your engine and tranny.  braking will be hard and require extra distance if you have to stop in a hurry your toast.
luck,
JR

every summer across europe masses of people haul camping trailers with nothing more than Fiat Pandas doing the pulling lol. id like to think the jeep can handle this task so long as you mind your guages and take it slow and easy. hills will prob be a nightmare though...

That sounds like a good choice.  I towed a  GOLF CART with my four banger once.... never  never  never  never  never  never  never  never  never  ever ever ever ever EVER AGAIN!  It felt like I was driving one of those buses with the split back and accordion joints in the middle.  The golf cart with trailer kept pushing me in a sawing motion.  It was only city driving, but not worth ever doing again.    :flush:

What kind of old mercedes did you find that only weighs 2000lbs?   The old mercedes I've seen are all tanks.

Simple enough...Suburban without a doubt.

Then get a full trailer that matches the tow setup on the Suburban.

Wash it and fill it up with gas before giving it back to your mom. She'll appreciate it.

It's a rare barn find, top secret until Saturday. (It's not a sports car)  :wall:

Since we're guessing, I'm going to say a Ponton sedan.

With an empty weight of 2200 kg, I doubt he'd be pulling a 411 with a Jeep.  :drink:

Close!

It was an ultra rare 1957 Ponton Pick up left hand drive, built by coach builder Binz:

Getting it out was a PITA, it had been raining and all the roads had been replaced by mud, iŽll post some pics later.
