Like I had messaged in chrisfranklin's thread,
After doing my axle upgrade, I have the same type of squeak. Mine seems to happen when the wheels see-saw, like going over curved dips, driveways, etc. Good to hear all the ideas. I'm going to start with pads and work my way out. Last thing to happen to me is I did the axle, then it fell off the jack stands before I was done. Should have looked at the exhaust. :wall: Already checked the driveline to ensure it wasn't any u-joints.
The noise originated after I rebuilt my rear axle about a month back; http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php/topic,8582.0.html . I’ve done some steps prior to find and repair the noise and they’re listed below. My thought is (since it’s a suspension type of noise) it has something to do with my jeep falling off those crappy metal jack strands and landing three legged.
While I was replacing my starter the other weekend, I figured I'd make an effort to figure out this dumb noise. I went through and lubricated all of the leaf springs with lithium grease, a putty knife, an old handle-less flathead and a hammer.
I carefully tapped the flathead shank in between each leaf spring and lubricated the pad and even as back as I could at the gathering point near the u-bolts (this seemed to be where 90% of my rust is originating from). I noticed two things: 1. for being only a little over 1 1/2 years old, they're getting pretty rusty; 2. I found a big leaf on the rear passenger side that was cock-eyed. I thought for sure the slanted leaf was my culprit as it looked to be rubbing on the bundle clips that wrap around the pack. I lifted the jeep, loosened the u-bolts, try’d smacking the leaf straight, but finally a clamp and some brute force re-aligned the spring. I finished tightening and lube and put everything back together and tested it out. The noise is still there!!! Grrrr… It’s not as loud and I may have quieted some of the noises. I remember prior that I would hear groaning of my springs, just never ever time I went through a slanted gutter or at this amplitude.
Things I have done:
- Inspect exhaust – Shook, rattled, and pulled; Clearances and parts look good. It doesn’t seem to be making any noise
- Leaf springs – Lubed and re-aligned one leaf; Quitted the noises considerably, but not 100%
- Shocks – Tried running loosen and then tight; It didn’t seem to make any difference
- U-Joints – Right after I did my axle repairs, my father-in-law suspected a u-joint making the noise, so I pulled the rear drive shaft (the only one I messed with) and both u-joints are good. The noise is happening under and under no load, so it seems to be suspension related.
Next things to check and try:
- Front track bar, lube and re-tighten then test
- Shocks, lube the bushings and re-tighten then test
- Original rear leaf spring bushing replacement/upgrade then test
One great positive to all of this, my suspension seems to be way kinder. It’s sucking up the road better than it ever has now that those springs are nice and lubricated ;)
If these steps above don’t work, I’m going to go back through chrisfranklin’s thread to look through all of your suggestions. Thanks!

Are you running a rear track bar? If so, remove it. I would probably remove the front track-bar as well. The track bars never stay tight with the extensions. They will usually loosen the extension and it will first squeak then you'll start to hear a hard knock as the track-bar tries to move. This will lead to one thing, the extension breaking off.
Exhaust might not rattle if you hit it. Although they typically get worse as you leave them alone. It's pretty easy to ID as they tend to change either when the engine warms up or as you romp on the throttle.
Fanned out leafs aren't usually a problem as they aren't able to fan out that far with the clamps in the way.

Rear track bar was taken off when the Banks Exhaust went on.
It's not a rattle but more of a metal to metal squeak. Sounds almost like a rusty pair of those hand exercisers that you squeeze. I can't describe it any other way. It also has no effect on temperature or how long it’s running. The noise happens all the time.

The leaf spring was binding against the retaining clamp. I thought for sure it was the culprit, but nope. If you look below, you can get an idea of what I mean. They're attached on the 2nd smallest leaf to keep the pack from stretching to far or something ???
I’ll post back when I’m done attacking the front track bar, etc… It may be a week or two. Not too motivated in this heat.

Well it was a bit cooler this afternoon, so I figured I'd take a look at the blue pile.
Got right up against my wall in front of my house, and the noise is coming from the rear passenger side for sure. That means the track bar is out.
Started pushing it in neutral on level ground through the gutter and into my driveway. The rear bushings on the leaf springs are making noise, squishy squeaky, but not the main complaint. The bushings are out (even though they could use some grease).
That leaves the shocks... but this is way too loud to be a shock. My sinking suspicion is this noise is coming from the axle and more specifically the passenger side tube. I'm going to go to the autoshop at work and grab those Matco Chassis Contact Microphones (http://www.matcotools.com/Catalog/toolcatalog.jsp?cattype=T&cat=2306&select=&page=5) and give it another go. Sigh...
I'll be reporting back soon.

is it squeaking when rolling and no bumps or only when you go over bumps?
-
I guess it's less of a squeak (that was the bushing), but the loudest part is more of a cracking tension sound. Only makes the sound when it rolls sideways through dips, or odd ball gutters like my curved gutter into my drive way. Head on bumps and bounces make no noise, even bouncing from my 300lb butt jumping on the side step rarley produces it, only when the wheels travel one wheel at a time through a dip. Approaching driveways at angles creates it too.
-
What are the chances that the bearing are bad on that side. straight on the bearings roll OK but when put under pressure at an angle they make your sound. Just an idea.
-
Not sure. I just put some outer axle bearings in, could be one of them. I won't know until I start pinning the noise's location.

i would think is something to do with your dust shield or e-brake shoes on your disk brakes maybe rubbing into the disk or the axle (or maybe one of the springs/brackets/cable/something from the e-brake assembly) - if i remember correctly you have disks on the rear and even if not maybe the shield on the rear drum rubs on it or same idea as for the disk e-brake shoes.

Here's what all just went down last month...

Yep, oh well... at least I'm a bit more cool'd off now.

Never something simple or inexpensive.

And another Chrysler Dana 35 Bites it. Can't say I'm surprised....

I retired the my Jeep from it's brief daily commute duty and I just spent $50 for a local welder to help me patch of the problem side of the axle.
Future action shots of my axle destroyed on a trail should be soon to follow. I'm keeping my eye out on a 8.8 still. ;)

SOLVED: Replaced the jerry rigged center pin bolt on the rear driverside leaf spring, noise is now gone. $2 fix, Procomp 97-380 3/8inx4in Center Pin bolt, and I have an extra now.

The noise, I believe, was from the strain on the little washers I used to space up the bolt.

Some other facts: The axle still is cracked, but patched. I'm still keeping an eye out for a Ford 8.8 out of a new Explorer.
