Title: Need cheap power
Post by: kyumanaz on August 22, 2010, 06:21:39 AM
I have a 97 TJ with 4 banger. I am getting ready to put on 32" or 33" tires. I have 31's now with a 3" lift. What is the cheapest way to get more power. I can't afford an engine swap, and I do everything in this Jeep. This is my daily driver, hunting fishing, trail riding, mudding, and sand throwing vehicle. I have 3 boys, and this is the guys toy, but have limited funds. I have access to cheap junkyards in Mexico even, but need a direction. Gear size, is throttle bady worth it? I am not looking for alot of power. Just enough to make it noticably better. Thanks for the input.

cheapest is 4.0 t/b and and fram airhog high flow filter

then come gears, injectors, cam, reprogramming the ECU/PCM or a "chip"

there is nothing that will give you "a lot of power" unfortunately unless you dig in your pockets

What gear ratio/ brand of gears do you suggest?

with 33s like you plan 4.88 is the one that gets you back to stock ratio (rpm to mph), but even with 31s 4.88 is ok and is the highest you can get on stock axles so might as well go to that ratio anyway.

you don't say if you have an auto or standard trans.  If an auto you could find some 4.10 axles from someone doing a swap.  If standard trans re-gear to 4.88s this gets you back to stock like performance.  Gearing is going to make the most difference.  You will see slight gains from installing a 4.0L throttle body, air filter, injectors, e fan, exhaust.

Sorry, I have an automatic transmission. RC 3" lift with 2.2 shocks and steering dampener. 31" BFG  AT's, Smittybuilt classic style front bumper, and a 3 year old who tells me that it is his Jeep.

I have a 97 4 banger/auto, I have done a few upgrades (4.0 TB with spacer, E-fan, 5.0 injectors, hi flow air filter) but, the most noticeable upgrade was going from 3.73 to 4.56 gears. When I upgraded from 31s to 33s I went with 10.5 width instead of 12.5, they are 12 lbs. lighter and less wind resistance.
