2001 2.5L TJ w/automatic
31" tires, 3.73 gears....At 55 MPH, Im almost at redline on RPMs.
What should my rpm range be at highway speeds? Does anyone else's rev high?
Im curious if it is a transmission issue? It shifts fine, but the RPMs are crazy.
Blew a 2.5l last month, bout to drop another one in, just want to sort it out.....
thoughts/feedback??

First thing would be to calibrate your speedometer. If you haven't changed it, it's reading slow.
At 3000 RPM you should be doing 75 MPH.
You can check it at http://jeeptech.com/javaAps/gta.html
Gear Ratio
1 2.74
2 1.54
3 1.00
R 2.20

sounds like the converter doesn't lock up (i think, not an expert on autos)

Or your trans is slipping!!

My speedo is correct, I checked it with a GPS.
Yea, my concern/thoughts are that it may be a tranny issue.
Anybody had any similar problems?

oh, and another one - does it shift thru all the gears?

+1 sounds like you're getting stuck in 2nd

Yes, it shifts through all the gears, and will even downshift when I give it gas, or climb a hill on the highway, pass a car, etc...
runs good at idle, but on the road, it hovers near the redline, and thats keeping it below 55-60.

try to shift manually 1-2-D and see how the rpms drop (standing start in 1 and gain some speed, shift in 2 and gain some speed again and then shift in D - note the rpm drop between 2 and D and report back). Also, you might want to disconnect the kick-down cable for a test. That's as far as my knowledge goes with autos, there are a few guys here that are good with these and they might jump in with some suggestions.

Are you sure it has 3.73 gears?
-
A auto does not have to slip very long to turn the fluid dark and give it a burnt smell.
Fluid should be clear pink and clean. .... ?? 8)

Well as far as the auto goes do a stall test is a good starting point as far as convertor function goes

Thanks, Ill try this stuff and report back after the weekend!

you could just put bigger tires on it, then you'll go faster... :doggy:
