Title: 30/35 front axle
Post by: lqdtrance on September 19, 2010, 12:05:04 PM
How much free play should I have when it's disconnected? I have at least a good quarter play. Also, I have some oil leaking out the center towards the passenger side. My jeep details should be in my sig.

you mean backlash between the ring and pinion? if you meant that is 1/4 turn sounds excessive to me, might want to take the cover off and inspect it.

1/4" or 1/4 turn?

Quarter turn, sorry.

1/4 turn means 90 degrees - that is a lot of backlash

take the cover off and have a look, it's probably a combination of R&P backlash and spider gears. IMO i'd say to take the cover off and have a look to see what's going on in there, probably a 1/2 an hour to an hour job.

If you are turning the drive shaft you might be seeing some wear there too.  It's better to turn the yoke directly to make sure.

Friend of mine looked at it with me. The lockers are the cause. They have a lot of free movement. Cheap ones. Lockright I think. Everything looks good in there though. I do need to replace that axle seal though.

It's normal for an auto locker to have 1/4 turn of movement.  My Detroit has about that much as well.

Sorry, I thought I had that listed in my sig for some reason.
